RICHMOND premiership player Marlion Pickett has been granted bail by a Perth magistrate after being charged over a string of alleged burglaries in which currency was stolen from safes.

Police remanded Pickett in custody on Sunday - a day after he played in the Tigers' 15-point win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium - alleging he was involved in commercial burglaries between December and January.

The 31-year-old appeared in the dock in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, wearing a black sweatshirt.

He only spoke to confirm his name and was not required to enter pleas.

A police prosecutor told the court the alleged offending by Pickett and others involved a series of commercial burglaries resulting in the theft of more than $380,000 in Australian and foreign currencies from within safes.

Pickett is facing 12 charges including four counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of stealing and three counts of criminal damage.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying there was a risk Pickett would reoffend if he was released.

Pickett's lawyer David Manera said the prosecution case rested largely on allegations deposits were made into his bank account by his co-offenders and that a camper-van rented in his name was driven interstate by the other men.

Magistrate Erin O'Donnell said the allegations were serious but she was confident Pickett did not present a significant flight risk.

She granted bail on the condition Pickett resides at his address in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, reports weekly to a local police station, does not interact with his alleged co-offenders and provides a $50,000 personal surety.

My daughter is a corporate lawyer mainly in the M & A area and not a criminal lawyer whislt also being a Richmond tragic
She has been following this also and in her mind she doesnt believe the cops would have charged him if they didnt believe they had a strong case specially with the media coverage it will recieve and they will be in the spot light.
Being remanded in custody is also another thing thats not great and having a $50k+$50k bail.

Her opinion is that going by the example of Pickett not being actually involved in the actual crime
He would have been well aware of what was going on and financed it and or facilitated it knowingly for the police to take it to this level but ofcourse nobody actually knows what the brother in law has said to the police and how much he and the others have implicated Pickett.

Funds going into his account in 2 separate deposits looks sus as well as the phone ping in the area is NOT GOOD
But fingers crossed that this case gets adjourned 18 months - 2 years

The thing I really am struggling with is this is the same bloke who has changed the way he plays footy in terms of is bumping and tackling etc , to survive in a game that has saved his life and given his family everything.
That’s a lot of effort, duty of care and commitment showing me just how much it means to him rather than just going out levelling blokes like he once did.
Same bloke who gave up grog and so on.

And then in the next breath I’m contemplating him throwing all that away for **** all.
Makes me really think that it’s just something very naive on his behalf that’s taken place but nonetheless it’s going to undo all his hard work sadly.

How’s anyone ever played AFL while out on bail?
Controversies
While playing for Carlton, Nicholls served a three-month jail term at Pentridge Prison in 1960, having been found guilty of embezzling £5,558 (equivalent to A$82,349 in 2018) from the Collins Street Branch of the ES&A Bank and larceny as a servant. He was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment (with an eligibility for parole after three months);[13] he missed the first eleven games of the 1960 season, returning to play against Richmond on 16 July 1960.

Aggravated burglary is the most serious I used google 😂 it means act of violence with a weapon or assault and he is up on 4 counts it doesn’t look good
Nope read earlier as the seven points for aggravated burglary were put up earlier. There were two points where you can be charged for it and not be at the scene. So if someone has thrown him under a bus he can still be cleared. Don’t assume anything yet as if what you’re saying is right there’s no way he would’ve been granted bail.

What we have from his lawyer is the deposits (who knows how much money he may have legitimately loaned to people?) and the rental, which again, could also have been a favour to a mate.

It doesn't look good, but as you say, he's put so much into turning his life around, it's really difficult to fathom why he'd risk it all with full knowledge of what he was getting involved with. I just hope that if he's been taken advantage of, he's able to clear his name and at least establish that he didn't set out to be involved.

The biggest concern is the money being deposited directly into his account. He would need to prove its entirely unrelated.
The clothes and the camper van are less worrisome. The ping is circumstantial and they would need evidence he was physically in the area.

50/50 for me as to whether he gets off, needs a good lawyer.
He doesn’t have to prove it’s unrelated; the prosecution have to prove it’s related.

Well said. That's very true but I expect that they will subpoena documentation etc. During discovery you can also ask questions of the accused so I think at some level he will need to explain the money.

But many things can be considered a weapon: a boxer's fists, Hatchet Harry's wife's little black helper...

And let's not forget the Windy Hill weapon who almost single handedly destroyed those smug prick Bombers for a decade!

It's not his and family's life he will undo in this times where his people are asking for fair go every single thing indigenous people do causes damage.I feel for genuine hard done by people only to lose all hope due to the actions of a few eg Thorpe footy players and the indigenous crimes all over.
When we had so many on the list at one time I was a proud tiger but the actions of 2 off them makes me think otherwise and thinking why bother and than I look At Daniel Rioli and say well no there is still hope.

Not good when his lawyer was asked "What's he going to plead"? and answered "We will wait and see when we get the evidence."

Doesn't make him sound like an innocent man.

That’s an issue with the court system.
Plenty of not guilty people plead guilty as it’s easier.

Ties with friends/family are very hard to break. I think he's been involved helping his brother in law out. Tragic if he's found guilty and goes back to jail.
