If it hadn’t rained we’d have still won, so yeah . What did we lose 30 odd overs to rain. The idea around test cricket is bat first and make as much as you can. Then try to take the lose out of the equation. Then try and win.

Root threw his wicket away in the second innings, the game should have been a draw amd again they needed a placid pitch to play the way they wanted.

If it had been a seaming wicket we may have lost although one does wonder if they were concerned with facing Boland on a pitch that suited bowlers.

Anyways they need to win 2 more tests than us over a 5 test series. Wonder if it will be another ‘ road’ in the 2nd test

yep, so a pitch that gives both sides a chance to win must be bang on perfect.

What I don't like is the arrogance of the POM's thinking test cricket needs 'saving' with this Bazzball BS.

Test cricket has been, and always will be the best form of cricket and is going nowhere. There's nothing better than a test series between two good sides, and T20 and ODI's are just a sideshow.

We don't need tests with stupid fielding positions & T20 level run rates.

Prepare wickets that balance bat vs ball, and you'll get exciting games of cricket that people will watch. Simple.

For anyone interested, the world cup qualifiers are now going on in Zimbabwe with a number of test countries (Zimbabwe, Ireland, West Indies and Sri Lanka) and associate countries (Oman, Nepal, UAE, The Netherlands, USA and Scotland) taking part. They are on Kayo and Foxsports, including replays.

A few years ago Merv was visiting the hospital next door to my work. As he walked past a colleague and I having a coffee out the front my mate said "Merv". Without breaking stride a perfectly friendly Merv nodded and replied "lads".
