Player Watch #37: Cooper Harvey - signs 1yr extension - Roo til end 2025

I have previously been on the record, alongside a few other respected VFL watchers and even Ratts, saying Cooper needed to improve a few things to get a game. This included defensive pressure (10 tackles over the last two weeks), defensive running, defensive intensity, workrate (has definitely lifted) and be a tad more selfless at times.

While still a work in progress, he has improved on all those listed things over the last month. The most pleasing thing about his game on the weekend was that was the first time I felt he played with genuine offensive and defensive intensity, and he looked to bring others into the game when the situation demanded it.

It’s interesting the want him to be more selfless. One of the best things about his dad was that he was selfish (in a good way). How. I’ve would it be to have a small forward kick 5 goals. Must be 6 plus years since LT would have done it
Definitely has his father’s leading pattern smarts.

Its all the other team stuff besides just kicking goals for yourself. Sure do that when the opportunity is there but don't burn guys on low percentage shots or fail to chase or shepherd. He's definitely working on that stuff.

Pretty close to earning a run. Pity he doesn't play in the backline though...
Exactly.

Hopefully he comes in this week. Curtis has been better recently so I'd probably keep him too. Dunno who i'd drop for him to be honest. Maybe Shiels. Can move the rest of the team to accomodate that. We have a couple of good versatile players.

Got some mail he is 100% going to debut this week.

Shiels out and Zurhaar to play higher, leaving Curtis and Harvey deeper.

I could not agree more with you.

That's been my issue with him as well, has just looked lazy and missed opportunities to tackle, run and carry, provide options. Felt like he was behaving like he was playing country footy as a deep forward. Perhaps he was.

It is genuinely good to see him finally clicking on what he needs to do on the field as an AFL player.

Not sure he’s ready yet for the small forward role in the seniors. Seems to get too much of the ball and kicks too many goals.

More seriously, would be good to see him get a block of games this year. On form he’s surely worth a look.

He might be a bit too similar to Paul Curtis, neither are the small crumber/pressure machine type that people think of these days as a small forward.

Zurhaar seems like he's doing a better job of that this year and doing more of it.

So I just checked his stats and its his highest average GA (0.93) since his first season where he played four games and had 4. Also has close to double the I50s than he's had for most of his career, and significantly more than any other season (nearly 1.5 per game.) Double the clearances of any other season he's ever had except the first, just nearly double that. A few other stats show he's getting up the ground alot more so he's capable of doing that this year, compared to the rest of his career.

It should work well.

Curtis pushed up the ground alot on the weekend too. He got 3 I50 and two rb from the defensive 50. I dunno if he'd have ever done that before. And it was obvious too. I've seen him working into the defensive 50 both weeks he's been back in the side.

So you could bring in Booper and rotate both those guys higher up the ground at times.

Debuts against Hawks you would think

Appropriate as its the team his Dad and Uncle played together against in 2004 the week he was born and both moved the shape of a C for Cooper when they goaled.

Shane also kicked 4 goals. Yes thats correct. 4.
