Geelongs regular ITK poster just posted that Sanders will be off the draft table - Re North requesting priority access to him given he's been a partof their academy for years and years.

Going to make things fairly interesting for teams looking for a Mid if true.
I thought academy players can’t be picked up in the first and second round.

I don't have the article on me as I can't access them but believe its in here

If its not this one its somewhere around atm that North has put in a request to be given free access to Sanders. North fans been waffling on about it all week.

Would probably be more palatable than a top 3 pick as a PP, Sanders more likely around pick 8-10 range.

After the afl gifted JUH to western bulldogs they changed the rule. I don’t reckon they’ll be given the privilege.

North have applied for the 18-year-old to be included in their NGA crop, and Sanders received his certificate of Aboriginality about six weeks ago after a lengthy process. The AFL is yet to give approval to the Roos’ NGA request, and did not respond to The Age’s inquiries.

However, a major complication is that draft rules state clubs are unable to match a bid on an NGA prospect if a player is selected within the first 40 picks, where Sanders is certain to be taken. One motivation for North to push on with Sanders’ NGA application is if they are given the green light, they could then lobby the league to gain pre-draft access to the 186-centimetre midfielder instead of asking for a priority pick. The Suns were previously able to select academy prospects without having to match an opposition bid, among a suite of list concessions the league afforded them.

A bored exercise for you all...

Imagining we had 3 picks inside 30 at roughly 5,12,25

If you had to pick 1 player from each of these three groups to make up a trio of picks for us who would you choose? Feel free to add any others you're interested in that I haven't listed. Just have who I think will be around that mark.

<<< Pick 5 >>>
Nate Caddy (Charlie Curnow)
Daniel Curtin (Steven May)
Colby Mckercher (Zach Merrett but faster)
Nick Watson (Eddie Betts/Tom Papley)
Ryley Sanders (JHF with less explosiveness)
Zane Duursma (Degoey/Fritsch)

<<< Pick 12 >>>
Connor O'Sullivan (Weitering)
Darcy Wilson (Jack Crisp/Josh Daicos)
Mitchell Edwards (Tim English)
Jack Delean (Cody Weightman)
Koltyn Tholstrup (Cam Zurhaar)
Nathan Philactides (Ed Richards)

<<< Pick 25 >>>
AshtonMoir (Isaac Heeney/Marshmallow)
Will Patton (Tom Stewart)
Jack Callinan (Brad Close)
Luamon Lual (Isaac Quaynor)
Harry Demattia (Rory Laird)
Ollie Murphy (Sam Taylor)

I've tried to give as close to a player comparison as I can. Obviously, some aren't like for likes but they are the closest I could think of.

Love this.

Give me Watson, Wilson, and Murphy please.

Thanks Stam, from looking around the other boards seems like a few people saying Sanders is going to be given to them. I think its a decent way of helping them out without being too outlandish

Already there are four players in the first round that potentially get picked up by clubs via academy or father/son (Walter, Read, Rogers, Croft). Sanders would make a fifth. Add to that the potential for GWS and Norf to receive compensation picks for Himmelberg & McKay if they take free agency, as is being talked about. Not sure either ends up in top 5% of salaries, qualifying for a 1st round pick, but they may do - or the AFL may give it to them anyway.

If so, we might see a first round something like this (using Bangers latest draft ranking (I've paid no attention to needs), and current ladder positions):

1 WCE Reid
2 GCS Walter (bid by NM)
3 NM McKercher
4 GCS Read (bid by NM)
5 NM Watson (compensation pick for McKay)
6 HAW O'Sullivan
7 MEL Curtin (pick was traded by Freo)
8 ??? Duursma (pick to be traded by GCS)
9 NM Sanders (bid by GWS)
10 GWS Caddy (pick was traded by Rich)
11 GCS Rogers (bid by CAR)
12 CAR Wilson
13 GWS Edwards
14 WBU Croft (bid by GWS)
15 GWS Freijah
16 ADE Murphy
17 GEE Delean
18 ??? Johnston (pick to be traded by WBU)
19 STK Hastie
20 ESS Roberts
21 MEL
22 WBU (pick prob gets traded, was traded by BRI)
23 NM (pick prob gets traded, was traded by PA)
24 COLL

I suspect what will happen is that the AFL fudges the McKay compensation (if it happens), so that they end up with one or other of the extra 1st round pick, or access to Sanders. To get both would be highly unfair. Especially considering we got SFA for the years we spent on the bottom.

Also, this doesn't take into account any compensation WCE might request - and you'd think they'd mount a better case than Norf.

Makes it a highly compromised draft. Hawthorn would be extremely pissed, as would GWS, who might otherwise be expecting 3 picks in the first 7 or 8.

Mind you, it'd be funny to see Norf get this, and for McKercher and Sanders to take off when the Devils join the comp.

See above

Yep, so it would be as a priority pick not as NGA as NGA has set specific rules.
Either way, it’s a farce but not unexpected at all

Now when is the AFL going to remove the farce that is Gold Coasts zone of the NT….that was only meant to be interim, that’s becoming permanent

That Jed Walter has a few Charlie Curnow characteristics. Sadly he's likely off to gold coast as part of their academy.

They will have a gun list next season with their 3 new academy additions. There might be options to get someone like Hollands home because they will be looking for points. Maybe the pick we get for Zac Fisher to the sunnies for Hollands? (Quite a few assumptions there)
