Not a surprise it's him.

However I am surprised Troy has agreed to go down this path - very disappointed in him.

Don't pay him a cent and take what was a wonderful image off everything. Pretty sad his legacy has been reduced to this.

There is probably a legal precedent somewhere but that doesn’t mean you should use it.

This is something you’d expect from somebody whose name is a brand (like Michael Jordan).

For the Bond brothers the equation is simple: this is something by which they should be truly honoured, and any grab for cash is nowhere near worth the damage this is doing to their reputations and legacies.

Anyone who has told them anything different is giving them unbelievably poor advice.

And yes - the clubs should remove the images and never use anything featuring either one of them again.

I don't think Norm Provan and Arthur Summons ever sued the NRL over their premiership trophy.

Not sure of the detail, but I think it's around the fact that people do not have a copyright over their own image, i.e. you can take a picture and e.g. publish it on social media, they can't stop you, but they do have a right to not have their image associated with a marketing / $ making message without their permission.

It might be arguable that they have a case, but IMO it's an odd thing to sue over. You go from being remembered for an iconic image, to being remembered for suing over it.

I’m more interested to know

1) how long the Showdown trophy has been around (I assume since 1997)

2) how can you decide that now you want to sue rather than 5, 10 or 15 years ago and doing it now discredits you when you have had ample opportunity to do it years ago

Seems bizarre.

I never liked the coming together thing Variety added to the Showdown anyway, we hate eachother. If the AFL own the likeness/images, pay them nothing, if thats not the case, pay them to go away, then come up with something that looks like a football trophy.

Neither played more than 60 games for their club so probably more worthy names for the honour anyway.

A trip over to the Port board reminded me how ugly the Showdown medal is too, so get rid of that at the same time.

I'm not sure how an adult allowed that to happen and then how they probably weren't fired for it either.

Yeah, looks like something you'd get in a cereal box.

The clubs should've taken the opportunity to rename it the Phil Walsh medal.

The image was taken after Showdown 2. The current trophy using the image was introduced for Showdown 44, in 2018:

Port didn't want that.
Correct.

Correct.

It was the last time I had ever posted on that feral board, when this discussion came up.

Port showed their true colours. Naming it the Phil Walsh Medal was the perfect name for this medal. The uproar that this created on the Port board was beyond belief.

I understood the AFL owns all images and IP that occurs on the footy field and can do what it likes with it
Putting this image on the Showdown Medal would have more meaning and significance and also the AFL definitely does not own it. :$

Its where the real heroes were made.

Yes, it's an interesting situation. The photo was taken by Ray Titus (?) for the Advertiser, under his / their AFL accreditation, which presumably gives the Addy the right to use the image; but does the AFL own the image, and how far does their right of control extend? Presumably there was no issue with the clubs and Variety using it... I'm sure there are some fine legal minds out there (and Greg Griffin also :) ) who would be able to write a thesis on that.

Goodness me, that's horrid. I must admit I've never looked that closely at the trophy either, but it looks kind of naff on there too.

Maybe a good time to offer a tiny settlement for past use and change the look going forward. Not sure it really captures the feel of a Showdown anyway.

It looks like the dad who was assigned organising the medal for an under 10's fun game forgot until Saturday morning, ran into a shoe repair and engraving shop on the way to the oval, was told this is the best we can do within the available 15 minutes and figured ok will have to do, we'll fix it on Monday. Then nobody got around to fixing it.

This is the Showdown medal, and they've what, designed it in Microsoft Word and laser printed it onto a generic blank medal? Not good enough.

Yeah it was odd.

He is a Port life member. Had more to do with Port than us.

My first thought is that it is an AFL owned image taken by an AFL accredited photographer.

Although it was 1997, so did the AFL have their clutches on all AFL imagery then?

Greg Griffen is a goose isn't he. First thing he did was run around crying racism and how bad the indigenous players are treated. Does the clubs even make any money off the use of their image in the showdowns? Ive never seen T-Shirts, replica showdown medals or trophy's for sale. I could be wrong.

Guess we can't wait for Charles Brownlow's and John Coleman's family to come knocking with their lawyer. Guess Blight is going to demand financial compensation now too.

They probably didn't like him leaving?
It was the only reason why they didnt want the Showdown medal to be named the Phil Walsh Medal.

He coached the Crows literally for a few months.

Imagine how insecure, petty and pathetic their supporter base and Club are.
