“He’ll be right” is some real head in the sand stuff. He might break the game open and go on a tear, but a month of below par footy is not ok and needs to be addressed as a club standard. King had a solid first half of the year, no denying that, coming off an ACL. He should be a 45 goal plus player, but has dropped off badly.

I would 100% back King in too… if we didn’t have performing forwards in the VFL who could try his role.
What's Luko supposed to say? 'Yeah Ben was awful and should be dropped for Mabs'. Of course he's going to back one of his best mates at the club and I tend to agree that Kingy is a bit of a confidence player at the moment in the sense that if he can nab an early goal then other parts of his game should start to click too.

Side note. I don't think enough has been made of Luko being our leading goalkicker for this season (34) at the moment. He only became a permanent forward (if you can even call him that) this year and is potentially already our best forward. Certainly our most potent one as he's become a far more reliable kick in front of the big sticks over the last month or two. In fact, in Luko's last 8 games he's kicked 21.6! If he maintained that pace all season then he'd kick 60 goals for us and would finish top 3 in the Coleman. Unreal transformation from Luko lately and definitely worth pursuing as a permanent key forward.

Yeah, of course he would back in B King. And of course King will back in B King. And of course the media are just circling around, waiting to make it a big story no matter what happens.

But the club is basically saying that because King earns twice as much money than any of our other forwards, then he is undroppable. Any other forwards would have been sent to the reserves for his form weeks ago—see Chol, Sexton, Rosas etc.

For the record, I reckon King is a gun and has been solid for most of the year, especially coming off an ACL. Just needs a break/change to reset because the last month has been his worst. And everyone is frustrated (probably including B King) because he is better than that.

Luko has been solid all year, but has been excellent since Darwin. Feels like since that double bag of 5, he really felt at home as a forward. Playing a bit deeper instead of always from outside 50 means he’s been getting shots closer to goal too. Using his body better in marking contests as well.

I think king has done very well to kick goals even when not playing particularly well at times in 2021 and 2023.

This is not a bad thing as having a forward who can still contribute even when not on is key.

I do think it’s at times masked his overall performance. There have been plenty of 7 disposal, 3 mark, 2 goal games that aren’t particularly good but get a pass mark because of the goals.

Hawthorn game he really showed what he could do with ball in hand. Although only had 2 goals in that game did a bunch of other things well. Haven’t seen it all that often though.

He hardly gets votes in our board medal.

The kicking to advantage is generally woeful and doesn’t help.
Now that the best deliverer lukosius is playing deeper he’s probably been robbed of a few goals that luko may have delivered him earlier in the year

He has kicked 33 goals after an ACL could still get to that 45 goal mark

I have been critical of Bens performance for a greater part of the year, but in fairness i will say the club did him no service
by playing straight in the Firsts, with only limited game time before first game.
Should have played a couple of reserves games just to get his confidence up and test his knee.
We carried him through the first five games losing 4 of them.
Since then he had a reasonable period of playing some solid football ,all but aginst some average teams.
Lately his form has fallen rapidly to the extent he has become a liability.
Most disappointing part to me has been his lack of competing both in the air and on the ground.
Eight tackles in 18 games is just not good enough.
Unlikely to be dropped now with finals gone, so the club need to play him somewhere else .
Always believed he would be better suited to playing the roll of a roaming forward (Nick Riewoldt type)or CHB.
Dont believe he has the bulk or aggression to be a long term FF.
Lets hope he finds some football in the coming weeks.

Yeah, apparent lack of chasing, pressure, competing after bye is disappointing regardless of being sore and coming from ACL. Steven King mentioned this week he will have a freedom to roam higher up the ground.

It takes for some players up to 2 years to come back from ACL. He seems did not lose speed, agility which is good. Just surviving season without injury will be a good season for him. Another pre-season under a new coach and he should be all good hopefully. Just don't like when Ben looks like not competing. He looked a bit similar before ACL late in the season.

This has come around quick

This is telling.
I can see which players are excited and which are grieving. Personally, I just want to see some fight on Sat and not that insipid 2nd half against GWS.
"The first thing you've got to understand is there was a broad spectrum of emotions on where the playing group sit on that," Collins said.

"For some it's a fresh start and clean slate and there's a lot of excitement.
"For others there's a bit of disappointment and almost a bit of a grieving process around that, the fact that somebody you really look up to isn't at the club anymore."

The likes of Hollands and Flanders would see it as a fresh start. Maybe King is a bit disapointed and greiving, I think he was close to him? Maybe its affected his performance.

Kings form slump began before dew went so can't really lay all the blame on that. My view is he's been carrying a niggle that he's tried to work through, form dropped and now confidence is shot.
That's what annoys me without knowing details. I understand we played for finals but how King performances and Witts for that matter too helped us? If they carry niggles rest them a couple of games. They hurt us more than helped. And we have replacements playing decent footy in VFL.

Good heavens, surely Buddy's not our "big fish"
Just Dixon crazy idea. Check out Montagna and King faces on First Crack when he came up with it. King could not comprehend, just asking repeatably why. It was quite funny.

Just news on SEN - Swans players were told today Buddy is retiring.

I honestly wouldn’t mind him working with Ben King and Jed Walter and helping them with their forward craft, buddy is the best forward in the past couple of decades and could definitely help mentor them to get the best out of their respective games.

But yes I agree hopefully he isn’t the big fish.

If Buddy moves to GC and is interested, he can always get involved like Frawley is at the moment. He can even have a run with VFL team like Frawley did last year:p

Buddy's never won a Frosty Miller Medal

Makes sense for him to claim it before he completly hangs them up :p

Just reported as breaking news on CH7 Gold Coast News that Buddy landed at Gold Coast Airport this afternoon and intends to spend the next few weeks here...

He does have a house of the Gold Coast, not too surprising.
His wife Jesinta Franklin is also from the Gold Coast and probably wants to move closer to family.

I don't think Buddy is the type of person who would retire then come back, he seems to be done with footy unfortunately.
