Went and had a look on Saturday. Hyde down back was more than OK, Stannett forward... it's a no from me, looked lost. Strom's ruckwork improved and still strong on ground balls but would have liked to have had a look at Fiedler as well. Runnalls played her wing well but still can't kick over a jam jar unfortunately. Miller and Bowers gave their normal effort but Gabby was a huge improver, looking forward to seeing what she brings this year. The addition of Roxy forward can hopefully take some pressure of Aine, but she looks primed for a massive season if she can clunk a few more grabs! Of the newbies, I liked Mulder's game, she's hard at it which fits in well with our midfield, and Flynn gave us some run off half back. Throw back in Eps, Pugh, Drisco, Roxy & Seth who all sat out and it's all looking quite positive.

The addition of Roxy forward
Anyone got any intel on this? When I saw a pre-game write up (can't remember if Freo site or AFLW site) which listed notable omissions, all had an injury mentioned, but Roxy's omission had no explanation.

Given that she maybe hasn't come along over the last year as well as many might've hoped, I was wondering whether she was omitted on the basis of form...?

Believe she had her wisdom teeth out last week! Ouch!

I think we should be back in finals this year.
We obviously need to stay healthier than last year but with an easier draw than we’ve had, we should be aiming for 4th to 6th to get at least one home final.

Nominated for the Buddy Draft yet?

If you have then I'm running it later today.

If not what the heck are you doing? Get on it!

Completely OT, but does anyone else hate the pink on our jumpers? It’s bugged me since day 1, but it really yanks my chain these days. We’re the ONLY club to have different colours for our men’s and women’s teams! Pink isn’t a Freo colour. I say we dump it and have the whole club wearing the same colours!

Clearly Eliza is required to cover both WA AFLW teams. I, however, have no such obligation and have exercised editorial discretion in relation to the section on the other mob (I've cut it).

West Coast and Fremantle AFLW captains declare finals their benchmark for 2023

One club has been a pillar of stability. The other has been forced to wade through chaos and change. But the tables have turned on West Coast and Fremantle this season, writes ELIZA REILLY.

The tables have turned.
The past four years have seen the two Western Australian clubs undertake vastly disparate journeys. One club has been a pillar of stability. The other has been forced to wade through chaos and change.

Now, ahead of the 2023 season, it’s finally time for Fremantle and West Coast to trade places.
It’s a development that both captains are embracing.

Fremantle play finals football. Well, at least the Dockers did for four straight seasons.
Last season was an anomaly for Freo. An injury crisis cruelled the Dockers’ season-seven campaign and after just three wins, Trent Cooper was removed as head coach.
Fremantle also farewelled inaugural captain Kara Antonio, All-Australian defender Janelle Cuthbertson and emerging key forward Amy Franklin.
Former Dockers player Lisa Webb was appointed to steady the ship, a popular choice among the players. And the new coach has wasted little time implementing a new style of play.
Fremantle captain Hayley Miller says the instability has sparked something within the playing group.
“There’s been a lot of change but the group has taken that on really well and taken ownership of the game plan,” she said.
“It’s been exciting to have a fresh look on footy again and for a lot of us, that shake-up has been really exciting.”

Speed, skill and flexibility are set to be the hallmarks of the new-look Dockers. And the finer details of Webb’s plan have come together across a demanding pre-season.
“It does have its challenges, trying to learn a new game plan in such a short space of time,” Miller said.
“I’ve been around footy for a few years now and it’s not anything groundbreaking, so it’s been a matter of applying what we’re learning out on the track and breaking some habits that you pick up over several years.
“We’ve got an education room at the club that’s been absolutely hammered by the girls, looking not only at vision but the written game plan and theory. The assistant coaches and Lisa have also been great in our education sessions at the club. It’s been a well-rounded approach in that sense. We’ve started to see it all come together in our practice matches.”

Despite the off-season upheaval, Miller has set a high benchmark for season 2023.
“If we’re not making finals I’d be disappointed,” she said. “Last year, it was a disappointing season. We didn’t play the way we wanted to play although we were competitive in a number of games.
“At the end of the day, we want to be in finals contention. That’s an absolute minimum.”

Miller tipped defender Mikayla Hyde to take the next step in her AFLW career after a strong pre-season, while fellow defender Madeleine Scanlon is one of Fremantle’s rising stars.
“She didn’t really get much of an opportunity last year due to injury but she’s shown us her athletic ability,” Miller said.
“She’s still very raw in football but she got her hands on the ball in our practice match, so that’ll grow her confidence.”
