For those sceptical about Maurice Rioli Junior…look at his pressure acts and the benefit it brings

Im an MRJ fan…we are judging the kid too hard

from the article below

Taking it one step further, the best way to judge the value of a player's pressure is looking at if it causes turnovers from the opposition, and measuring pressure act effectiveness based on the score by a team generated by a player's pressure. It's here, that Richmond young gun Maurice Rioli dominates.
The excitement machine has only played 12 matches this season, but from those 12, he has forced 46 turnovers, which resulted in a whopping 106 points created for his side.…..
To put that into perspective, Brisbane's Lincoln McCarthy has generated 99 points for the Lions from his pressure acts, but he has played eight more matches than the aforementioned Tiger.
For good reason our attention gravitates to the eye-catching midfielders and goal-kickers, or even defensive interceptors, when looking for the most effective players on the park. But don't forget to notice and praise those at the source, the unsung heroes applying a stack of pressure to ensure your favourite players can thrive in the spotlight.

This type of thing is exactly what I love in role players and why stats you can access easily don't always show the full story.

Just like Tylar Young wasn't anywhere near the conversation for being a top backmen. Yet his stats 1 on 1 and 1%ers were incredible and he was so hugely reliable

Yep…it’s the role players that make the team better

One number can't contain Juddy

"had JNR being caught 2 times in the one drill trying to beat too many opponents"...... Stating facts isn't a hammering. MRJ gets critiqued by far too many wearing rose coloured glasses. He plays seniors barely touches it, misses a teammate 15m away by 5m, gets run down EVERY single time, kicks 1 goal in 12 games missing in all manners of ways. In and out of team yet does nothing in Magoo's to warrant coming back in.

Plays a couple of ok games in the Magoo's against tradesmen who work 60hours a week doing a physical job and next thing people are declaring he's the prodigal gun who will solve all our senior midfield woes..... WTF?

Naish nearly wins league bnf, Will Martyn wins BnF yet so many label them complete useless spuds. MRJ wouldn't be getting $300 playing Div 1 seniors if his last name was Pickett, Stack or Yarran. Because it's Rioli people assume he might as well be given a Norm Smith at birth. His uncle who coached him used to give updates on him on big footy when he was a kid and even he admitted he didn't like hard work and was prone to go walkabout.

Stack was the favourite for the rising star before injury, dominated in every line at seniors and Magoo's. In his final season on the back of continued great form Stack played one of the best wet weather games ever against Geelong reserves single handedly winning the game by himself.. and Hardwick rewarded him by promoting Cartagna and Aarts instead. MRJ gets 2 effective touches in the Magoo's and voila back in the snrs.

Stack had a sh1t start to life juxtaposed with MRJ laying around in paradise and gifted an elite private boarding school education..... Yeah people have been real hard on MRJ. How dare they state facts!
if only stack had mrjs upbringing

That is from 2022. That is a lot of Zingers and McNuggets ago

Wouldn't at all be surprised to see us finish bottom 2 or 3 but I'm still really excited at the young talent on our list.

We just need to be patient and back the new coaching staff in.
Finishing bottom 4 would be fine as long as Yze is playing the kids and they're learning the new gameplan.

Finishing bottom 4 but pumping games into too many of Grimes, Macintosh, Pickett, Prestia types now would unfortunately be pretty disastrous.

Lol you beat me to it. Some people think they can finagle the facts to fit their agenda. Even MRJ's mum would've been more honest in her assessment of his 2023 output when she said: "Son at least your 2023 season was better than Castagna, Edwards, Caddie and Gibcus............. Only just."

I need to fix this up re the Sonsie suspension, hope you're all sitting down.

Sonsie's suspension is a VFL suspension not an AFL suspension so therefore he is suspended for rounds 1 and 2 of the VFL season or if the corrupt league make Richmond have a bye, Rounds 1 and 3 or Rounds 2 and 3.

Which means and here is the bullshit part, he is therefore also suspended from playing AFL despite the fact that the VFL won't have started it's season, so if the corrupt league make the ressies have a round 1 or 2 bye then Sonsie in effect will not be able to play AFL until Rounds 5 or 6 at the earliest.

He can VFL praccy games as said above but that's it. Same thing happened to Jake Aarts, his 4 week ban ended up being like 7 weeks.

That’s not quite correct.

The AFL suspend players for the equivalent amount of games if the suspension incident occurred in the VFL. But the suspension has to be served.

Sonsie won’t be available for AFL selection until Richmond’s third AFL game. If he isn’t selected for that game, he would be deemed not have served his suspension (on the basis that he wasn’t selected for the previously two games because he wasn’t best 23), so would then have to serve the suspension in the VFL (if the VFL resumes the same week as AFL week 3 that would mean he wouldn’t be eligible for selection until AFL round 5).

Same thing happened to Noah Answerth at Brisbane a few years ago.

The Jake Aarts example is a tad different because he was suspensed in 2019; and couldn’t carry over to 2020 because the VFL season was canned because of COVID. Think he debuted in round 5 that year.
