For those sceptical about Maurice Rioli Junior…look at his pressure acts and the benefit it brings

Im an MRJ fan…we are judging the kid too hard

from the article below

Taking it one step further, the best way to judge the value of a player's pressure is looking at if it causes turnovers from the opposition, and measuring pressure act effectiveness based on the score by a team generated by a player's pressure. It's here, that Richmond young gun Maurice Rioli dominates.
The excitement machine has only played 12 matches this season, but from those 12, he has forced 46 turnovers, which resulted in a whopping 106 points created for his side.…..
To put that into perspective, Brisbane's Lincoln McCarthy has generated 99 points for the Lions from his pressure acts, but he has played eight more matches than the aforementioned Tiger.
For good reason our attention gravitates to the eye-catching midfielders and goal-kickers, or even defensive interceptors, when looking for the most effective players on the park. But don't forget to notice and praise those at the source, the unsung heroes applying a stack of pressure to ensure your favourite players can thrive in the spotlight.

I agree MRJ had an unbelievable debut late 2022 in a fwd line with no Dusty. He and Cumberland looked very promising. MRJ went backwards in 2023. His good "pressure" stuff was overshadowed by by getting caught by oppo and no kicking distance.

AFL App had Tarranto as our to be our highest pressure player.

Good to see MRJ play in the middle in the VFL. I'd have Graham, Kmac, Hopper, Broad/Grimes starting in the VFL. Bolton/Martin fwd mid. Prestia mid or not playing

Hopper probs not dropped so forward line Lynch, Kosi/Ryan, Bauer/Cumbo, Hopper Martin/Bolton. and Clarke, Coulthard etc.

I reckon we'll start with a side picked on merit over the pre-season. That may well end up being pretty similar but there will be no free rides.
Mantra for 24
As 23 finishes and we shut the door...
No free rides
None skeeta etal...

Lol you beat me to it. Some people think they can finagle the facts to fit their agenda. Even MRJ's mum would've been more honest in her assessment of his 2023 output when she said: "Son at least your 2023 season was better than Castagna, Edwards, Caddie and Gibcus............. Only just."

irony in your post is noted…

Facts are facts….the data shows us what MRJ is capable of…even if it was as far back as 2022….last year I know …so long ago…wow

so what do you reckon…. if a player has a poor season should he be shown the door…is branded a dud…delist?

Would have been a fair clean out at tiger land after our 2023 season

The draft reports all state how good a kick he is. Highlights looked good as well, one step goal from 55m. Kicking, for an inside mid looks a level above.

GIBCUS SHINES AT TIGER TRAINING

The Richmond fans peering through the fence from Punt Rd on Friday morning were in for a welcome sight with youngster Josh Gibcus powering through a strong running session.

The Tigers defender spent a week in Qatar last month in a bid to solve his ongoing hamstring problems, an injury that ruled him out of the entire 2023 season.

But Gibcus appeared to be running at full speed on Friday, charging through some sprint work away from the main group of mostly first to four year Tigers.

Gibcus worked on some leading patterns as a forward and had no problems pushing off into a sprint on hook leads and marking at speed.

He also joined in some early drills.

Richmond sees the young tall as a budding star defender and he showed strong signs of that trajectory across 18 games in his debut year in 2022.

Gibcus was joined for a short time away from the main group by draftees Kane McAuliffe and Liam Fawcett, who both flew in from South Australia on Thursday night.

Marlion Pickett again joined the young Tigers on track, alongside star defender Nick Vlastuin and Jack Ross jogged some laps.

Superstar Dustin Martin was not at training but has been a regular in the past two weeks despite not being officially required back until Monday.

Midfielder Thomson Dow’s work through a ball movement drill was described as “awesome” by new coach Adem Yze, while Hugo Ralphsmith and Judson Clarke moved well.

Clarke left the track early after a collision feeling for his left shoulder but was able to put his arm above his head and while sore, appeared to be fine.

He missed the end of last season with a cracked scapula.

Sam Banks also limped off the track with a lower right leg injury.

Maurice Rioli moved strongly on track and powered through some laps, while Tyler Sonsie has had a bright start to the pre-season.

Big man Mate Colina, who had his 2023 wiped out by a back injury, moved well and showed the athleticism that saw him finish high in the club’s 2km time trial despite standing at 211cm tall.

A set shot at goal showed Colina still has some rough edges to iron out.

These facts show he is capable of chasing ass and helping to generate 8 pts per game. Trouble is that’s all he is capable of.
Big whoop.

My concern is that he seems to be really able to contribute when the forward line as a group is essentially at full power so he has the other players around him to make up for some of the other parts of his game that he struggles with

He isn’t an aerial threat and his only real avenue to goal are crumbing snaps so offensively he doesn’t really bring much to the table

Defensively he is no doubt a standout but that’s it

I prefer Mansell who is also a limited player but he has a more well rounded game so can play a few different roles when needed or even push out onto the wing

I would even say Mansells game against the cats last year was one of the best defensive forwards games we have seen in a very long time
He was hurting the opposition and was a standout that day

His defence output his still quite good (obviously not as good as Rioli but those other factors make him a better fit for a spot in the 22

Players can only get so far with only having one trick especially if other parts of the team are also not firing on all cylinders to make up for any drawbacks

uze seems to
be too nice

hope hes got the ability to skitz out
I reckon the first dumb free or 50 that costs a goal might bring out a different side of him.

Spot on. Mansell's only real failure was his miss against Essendon but if Yze is a success his kick was actually the best miss of the year.

MRJ is a midfielder, play him there in the VFL and we will see the results.

Yeah I have a real soft spot for Mansell

Make no mistake I’m under no illusion about his place in the side and he will probably always be borderline best 22 but he’s the perfect “role player” who will take on any task for the side and will always give 200%
Skills are good enough but he has that campaigner about him that is missing in a lot of modern players

If he could develop a decent fitness base I would love to see him tried as a tagger
Has that of mongrel that could really work over players

Point taken…I’d like to see him in the midfield …he started that in vfl this season, so would be good to continue with that
i have a feeling ooze will get everything out of him…hopefully he continues to develop that side of his game to provide versatility

im not prepared to write him off just yet
