Didn’t you said you were Sam Mitchell don’t play him there then. Time to back up what you believe.
Dude, don't post when you are pissed. This is unreadable.

It might sound ridiculous, but we’d be wasting Weddle if we play him at Centre half back.
I named him there in the round 1 thread yesterday, but I was giving the entire HB line (Amon, Weddle, Impey) the same basic responsibility to break lines through run and carry and surge the ball forward. While the FB line had the other 3 (Scrimshaw, Blanck, Sicily) who would be more stay behind types responsible for minding the talls, intercepting and dishing it out to the HB line.

I definitely don't want to see Weddle sitting on an opposition key tall all game. I want to see him break some records on the AFL app's running tracker.

Last year we had one viable leading forward when the ball was coming in to our forward line.
When he was out injured for a third of the season, we had none.
Our onballers had nothing to kick to and it was easy for teams to zone off and fill the space.

I believe Sam has addressed this issue in a number of ways.

We have been drafting for speed and precise kicking. The ball will come in to our forward line better this year.
Instead of zero to one leading forward (like last year), our onballers will be kicking into a forward line with four viable leading options this year. This will enable us to spread the defence with staggered leads in different directions.

I believe Hardwick will play as he did as a junior, as a leading forward. He also adds experience, defensive pressure and hardness to the forward line.
In a best-case scenario Watson is up to AFL level quickly, and can play both as a crumbing forward, but also a leading forward where he can use his fast reflexes and agility to get away from his opponent (on the lead).

Gunston offers value in a number of ways. He is a smart player, positions himself well and slotted perfectly into a stacked forward line previously without getting in Buddy and Rough's way. He will kick goals because of his footy smarts and is likely to get the 4th or 5th best defender. He will also help to spread the defence and can play a 'Hodge-like' role up forward directing our young forwards on where to position themselves. I see him offering more value than the goals he'll kick, by what he will allow our other forwards to do by his inclusion.

The other thing that could 'supercharge' this forward line is the competition for spots.
For the first time since he's been at Hawthorn, Wingard will be returning from injury without the promise of an automatic spot. Assuming he comes back with his body in good shape, I suspect that the competition for spots might do wonders for his consistency, and that is without even mentioning Chol or Ginnivan who could also do with a dose of consistency.

In fact, even the 'threat' of Gunston taking one of their spots adds value to the group as a whole.

The only 'locks' this year might be Lewis, Breust and Hardwick, with Chol, Watson, Gunston, Moore, Ginnivan and some others fighting it out to be part of the starting six.

It might take some weeks before it starts to gel as a unit, but as a game plan, it makes sense to me, and as a unit, they might be greater than the sum of their parts, purely and simply because of diversity, and depth.

Easy to spot Weddle. Who's the one next to Impey keeping pace with Weddle? I think it's Bennetts?
Lucky that I have a picture before that drill.

Surprise, surprise cryptor ... when I zoom up and check who's beside Impey, it's #16.

On a side note, (based on my previous experiences) after a main training and when they're walking upstairs .... most of them are accommodating and reply back if you greet them.

In the last main training(Thursday), I did not greet Massimo when he was walking upstairs and he seems in a good spirit and he greeted me first, gave me a handshake and I'm surprised by his friendliness. I'm not even wearing anything(cap, shirt, jersey etc) that can identify me as a Hawks fan. Good impressions from me personally.

Hopefully he will be one of the next few ones the Hawks will give to Newmo89 for an interview.

Scrim has been playing KPD and doing quite well in pre season
Remember the time Scrim wanted to come back to Melbourne. His desire and choice was only the Hawks. Loved him ever since …….. Scrim has brown and gold running through his veins! He is a beautiful footballer from a nice kick, provides run, good overhead and puts his head/body on the line for the team. Great club man always in my 22!

Another member of the Scrimshaw fan club, welcome aboard brother!

A mate of mine is engaged to his sister, so scrim needs to keep being a Hawk!

Loving the club is a worthwhile attribute but your best 22 is made up of players who regularly deliver on the field.
Scrimshaw's numbers say he is marginal at best and the coaches agree with the numbers. He got fewer PCM votes than Harry, Seamus, Meek or Brockman, all of whom played fewer games (except for Meek who played the same number)

He has underperformed his whole career. Everyone knows he has the ability (which is why he was a top 10 draft pick in 2016) but he has never consistently delivered on that ability.

We all hope that 2024 will be his break out year. There were one or two games towards the end of last season when he played at the level of intensity required to fully realise his potential. However, there is no way he starts the season as an automatic best 22.

Grainger-Barras and Serong are vying for the same spot in defence. I’d rather see games put into them than Frost. 2024 is a make or break year for them.
Are they? Blanck, scrim, Sicily appears the preferred mix at this stage from reports. I’d say frost is competing with Blanck and Serong/DGB with scrim.

So the forward line is going to consist of two tall marking forwards (at this stage Lewis and Chol), one medium tall/3rd tall (Gunners) and three small crumbling forwards. The latter will, ultimately, come from: Moore, Chad, Bruest, Wiz, Dimma, Ginni and maybe even Butler. Seven does not go into three. We are overloaded with small forwards.

Yes, it's crying over spilt milk, but I still think we should have gone for Curtin over Watson.

Still, now he's in Hawk colours, I hope the Wiz does really well.

I think you put Dimma in with Gunston rather than the other smalls.

Best result in 2023 over magpies had 3 tall forwards, but still beat pies on the spread. but Gunston may be the best 3rd tall though

Btw there’s Wingard too.
