I'm pretty sure that stat is the quality of the possession chain immediately after the intercept. Based on GPS position and AFL player ratings.

Where the AFL's "Scores from intercept" (and related) split everything into score from intercept/stoppage/behind based on which was most recent before a score.

Yeah it's that person's model, similar to AFL Player Ratings, using positioning, xScore and so on. There's a few of them, quite a modern approach to analysing the game based on data the average guy doesn't have access to

I'll never wish a loss upon us. Once the game starts, I desperately want to win.

That said, I'm 95% confident we lose this because a) we suck and b) it's away.

I agree to a certain extent. If we win with youngsters then it gives us hope. If we win with the more than 2 of Sholl, Jones, McHenry, Keays, Murphy, Berry, Parnell then the win is almost counter productive.

I believe there is actually a publically accessible (or at least unsecured) live GPS feed. But it only has the last something like the 5 minutes of data at any one time.

Except the Adelaide coaching group
I just don’t understand how everyone in the football world except the Adelaide coaching group see that players like this are a waste of time.

It’s a special kind of boys club culture at the afc. Need to work your way into the clique and youre set.

It's weird there's some highly specific secret magic stats they have that show Murphy is amazing and does all this great stuff, while simultaneously they are unable to identify the issues in our midfield

I've always wondered what stats they were referring to here (because we all know it isn't scoring). Pressure? Useful disposal? The following is a collation of his stats per game compared to every player in the league last season.

151st in the league for pressure acts per game.
162nd for tackles.
70th for tackles I50.
191st in goals.
320th in goal accuracy*.
159th in shots at goal.
124th in score involvements.
193rd in score launches.
401st in marks.
208th in marks I50.
412th in contested marks.
150th in marks on the lead.
140th in clearances.
147th in contested possessions.
499th in intercept possessions.
147th in ground ball gets.
47th in F50 ground ball gets (Rankine and Keays were both top 10).
63rd in inside 50s.
491st in disposal efficiency (McHenry was 156th, surprisingly).
490th in kick efficiency.
393rd in one percenters.

I am enlightened. That's my GOAT alright.

I'll give you four of those, just! Saad is ordinary, Keays handed him a lesson last time we played them. McKay is hit or miss...i.e. great against North, a liability vs Freo. Walsh has perennial back problems, so may not ever reach full potential. They definitely have more depth / options in the midfield than we do, but most of their best 22 are not much better than ours.
Walsh is an out and out midfield gun.

McKay is a Coleman Medalist, he has won the goal kicking at Carlton 3 times.

Saad is a 2022 All-Australian, probably the best rebounding small defender in the game.

All three of these would walk into our team and instantly be in our top 5 players.

Let's compare them to their equivalents in our current squad ...

Walsh -- Laird
McKay -- Thilthorpe
Saad -- Smith

Peeeeeer-leez!!!

Murphy was pretty middle of the road on Player Ratings last year. Hardly world-beating, but safely in the best 22 by that arbitrary metric. He was pretty handy in some cameos at stoppages around the ground if I remember correctly.

Well the Board, for giving Nicks a two year extension after losing in round 1 and cluey coaching group, for failing to be inventive with our midfield mix.

This isn’t 2020 with Crouch and Laird the main players in the midfield, this 2024 and yet those two are still in there. If by some silly chance we actually win the spoon again, all hell will break loose.

Round 7 against Roos is pivotal, Round 11 against Coasters is pivotal and Round 12 against Hawks is pivotal.
Who would have thought our pivotal games this year were against the wooden spoon candidates

Well executing coaching strategy is as much about the strategy as it is the player you choose to execute it.

Using Murphy in this role is idiotic considering he doesn't kick goals, a dumb player and can't hit a pass. He is pretty left to run free by the opposition which is what creates the spare in the back for them most of the time.

Using someone like Miers in that role means that he has to be respected by the opposition and drags the opposition defence out of shape.

Its all part of coaching and player selection is where we fall over.

Another example is the midfiled.

Do we want to win the clearances, yes. But do we want Crouch and Laird playing the majority in the midfield so that they can win the clearances? No.

We fail to select the best players to execute our strategy then blame the player for not executing.
Great stuff!
The Miers Murphy analysis is thought provoking and accurate. I've not thought about Murphy like this before.

Very insightful analysis. Appreciated...

He’s the latest in a conga line of bog average footballers that continue to rack up games at the expense of finding out if a youngster is gonna make it or not.

I'd need to compare this list with some other players but this as a stand alone list is completely depressing.

And after this listed season, we thought he was leadership group quality 🤯.
