Is it bad to say I have no interest in watching Carlton play?
They play a contested brand, they don't play it overly well, and their forwards are just too lumbering for me to care for.
They only play a marginally more exciting brand than St Kilda.

They can’t afford to put too much speed on the game as they have very little leg speed.

Port have gone home here though which is making the blues look like they can actually score.

Having a big bodied midfielder who can go forward and kick goals like Cripps is just gold.

It’s something we lack, Worps is probably our most prolific goal kicker midfielder and he only does it sporadically.

Port are just making up the numbers. In the dreaded no mans land in the 6-12 range for the foreseeable future.
Good mids but shallow depth shown up tonight. Tall fwds and backs apart from Alir are not taking them anywhere.

Would like to think/hope Hawks don’t lose to them again in immediate upcoming years as we ascend the ladder.

JHF, Rozee and Butters will most likely be the best midfield in the next couple of years.

The challenge for Port will be being able to put a team around them that can challenge for the flag.

Like watching Curnow but need to see him show up in September. He's 28 in Feb and yet to get to 300 goals. Thought he might have been a few years younger.
Mitch Lewis is almost 26 and has 120 career goals. Injuries will do that.

I reckon Day and Newcombe could be those players, though I've been thinking that for a while now and it's yet to happen.

Mackenzie could too, but I don't see him really developing into a deep resting forward. More a HFF.

Thought the same. If only we'd attacked in the last quarter.

I'm, surprisingly, not dissatisfied with the Port loss anymore. This team is going to be really good if they can take the step after this one. I reckon we can finish mid-table this year. Somewhere between 12-14. And next year we'll be very good. Finals worthy. And the Port game will be the turning point. A lesson learned the hard way.

Now, often, the "lesson learned the hard way" is claimed as a sort of moral victory, but these boys look like they really do learn lessons. They look like a team with the potential to be very high-performing. And high performance is more attitude than aptitude. I think Sammy will be selecting his teams more on heart than talent. You need talent, of course, but it's a full commitment to excellence that will get a player in the side. Very exciting times.

I'm sure there is a logic to it that I am missing, but having both Sydney teams with the bye at the same time seems odd to me.
So the Sydney teams have had 2 byes before Hawks have even one.
The AFL do everything they can to fix the result, what is so disgusting is they still try and make out they organise the FIXture by groupings.
If ever there was no Hawks, there is no way I would follow the AFL it is just too contrived, and even now all I watch is the Hawks apart from the occasional few minutes of other games.

NRL gearing up for state of origin might be the reason why
I would doubt that tbh.
With origin next week many of the NRL clubs are fielding weaker sides this weekend, would have been a good weekend to have at least one of the Sydney AFL sides playing I would have thought.
But it's the AFL, so who knows..

Most teams perform poorly after the bye so we aren't hard done by - if we get a run of wins continuing up to the bye I will be dreading it. Consistency is key.

There will be a few rounds coming up where a raft of NRL clubs will get the bye around origin time - probably ensures that a Sydney team is playing in Sydney for those rounds.

Edit - turns out this is one of those rounds - so AFL ineptitude is looking more and more likely.

It's actually crazy how often teams lose coming off a bye. It bodes well for us next week playing GWS in Tassie. Downside is playing WC in Optus coming off our bye.

I'm not one to get bogged down with discussions about umpiring, but the very first goal of the night was a free kick to Burgoyne for a high tackle. It was a clear ducking motion; he went low under the tackle and yet he was paid the free. Commentators thought it was okay, and yet they carry on about Ginnivan!!!

Yeah, paying top dollar for Ratogolea was not the plan. Also, Zerk-Thatcher is just as bad.
I wondered about the Ratugolea situation when it happened, people here in Adelaide were talking it up as if he was a superstar, but I don't recall being all that impressed with him at Geelong. He's handy at best.
