As they say you can only play whats in front of you but we still smoked Melbourne and Collingwood when they were fit to start the year

Pies were definitely not fit and firing when we played them, they're another example of getting a team at the right time. They lost to Saints lol.

They've won 5 of 7 haven't they? Would be top 4 form over the last 8 weeks.

So you think the Hawks will play finals and are a formidable side ?

They beat 13,14,15, 11 and 18 on the ladder

I like their youth but gee big call

I think they could, yeah why not? But I said they're top 4 in terms of form, not that they will finish there.

I'd say Hawthorn get to 11 wins which should put them roughly 11th or so given you need roughly 50-52 points to qualify for finals

The ladder is fluctuating wildly at the moment but Essendon sitting second with a 0-3 record against top 4 teams is a funny quirk.
Such a poor % too.

Because they haven't shown they can beat anyone good would be one reason, it's mathematically possible , but I would bet on them missing .

The form is also somewhat misleading given who they played and where .

I was responding to the idea they are becoming formidable and make a run at the 8 like Carlton and GWS last year who both made the prelim .

They've shown they could and should have beaten Port..

This luck shit you keep running with is odd.

Pies were clear favourites even after the game it was reported as an upset.

Luck? What are you talking about?

I'm not particularly interested in what the bookies think. They still have them second favourite for the flag last I checked.

Bombers second with 13th best percentage. 7th best attack and 10th best defence.

10 games in Melbourne to help them overcome these numerical issues.
Collingwood didn't have a great % last couple of years, neither did the blues last year. Goes against the grain where % was the biggest indicator of ability. I still think it is the best indicator but those oddities are a reflection of teams opportunistically turning it on. As much as I'd back us, can also see any of the current top 8 having a good day and pipping us where we so happen to be a bit off. The performance fluctuations of most teams has been absolutely off the charts you never know what could happen come a final.

Yeah the Hawks gushing is an odd one.

They’re clear of the North, Richmond and West Coast pack but they’re still a long, long way off being in any discussions for a flag this decade.

Teams 2-8 will be expending a lot of energy as they fluctuate from Top 4 to 10th having a number of 8 point must win matches.

We know it’s exhausting playing every match like a final in the home and away. Meanwhile we will be coasting, rotating and fine tuning our run into the finals.

A well rested team, equals an energetic team which in turn means a fast team. Fast teams make good premiers.

Yours in speed, JHWF.

… and Brad Scott carrying on as if he’s a top coach… it makes me sick!
If not for the softest/rigged draw ever, they’d be sitting in their rightful place of around 10th or 11th.

Not sure it's 'rigged' they've just had a soft patch of games, just means they have tough games to come, as they're now finding.

Extract from Herald Sun article regarding the Equalisation Talks"

Largely, the requests from the two-club states shared “consistent themes” barring subtle differences from their history, staff or strategic phase.

Adelaide and Port Adelaide want out of the SANFL. They are prohibited from signing quality top-up players and are often uncompetitive.

They say that sabotages their development of AFL players.

The Giants and Swans want COLA (Cost of Living Allowances) to better pay their assistant coaches. Salary cap relief for draftees and poorly-paid players would also help.

Ex-Giant Dylan Buckley lost money on his last $70,000 rookie deal. The Swans seem to delist and re-rookie Robbie Fox repeatedly. How much would he be banking?

Game development boss Rob Auld often gets told he is too preoccupied with NSW and Queensland.

The Dockers and Eagles travel roughly 60,000km annually. Carlton its closer to 13,000km.

Freo attempt to stay on Perth time on the road. They call it “Docker Dial”. The AFL organised more training access to the MCG and Marvel Stadium for captain’s runs this year.

But the WA clubs want an extra home game, as the away team against Victorian clubs, and no more pre-season travel.

Might be old but sure I'm not the only one that hasn't seen it before

Crows have lost Matt Crouch for the year

I would be cautious re the non-Victorian clubs having a period of success over the Victorian clubs, as the ladder suggests is a possibility this year.

If you don't remember what happened last time there was a non-Victorian era of dominance, enjoy my new series...

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE: Episode One

(Spooky alien noises and foggy mist appearing from the corners of the frame.)

This guy appears on screen and tells you that everything you think you know about the AFL is about to go out the proverbial.

IMG_5928.jpeg

"When the Gold Coast Suns & Greater Western Sydney Giants were introduced to the competition in 2011 & 2012 respectively, it was seen as a great step forward for the national game, a chance to expand into the daunting Northern sporting market. But, dear mortal, it was just the opposite. Not an attempt to bring the game into the future, but to restore things back, in favour of the Old Guard."

(Haunting brass instruments play in the background.)

"What if I told you that Gold Coast & GWS were brought into the competition as unofficial Victorian, SA & WA academies masquerading as 'expansion clubs'? Gold Coast & GWS draft 18 year olds with high draft picks from the traditional footy states ---> those 18 year olds spend 3-4 yesrs developing at Gold Coast & GWS ---> they request trades back to those traditional footy states ---> the AFL compensates Gold Coast & GWS with more draft picks ---> the cycle continues. Think it can't happen? Well think again..."

(Cut to ad breaks, with infomercials about Lewis Roberts-Thomson-looking mops with extendable handles, and Patsy Cline & Marty Robbins CD collections.)

"Welcome back. If you're wondering whether the theory posited earlier could be true, we must first consider all of the possibilities. It sure is hard to believe that the AFL has established Gold Coast & GWS with the purpose of serving as development academies for the Victorian, SA & WA clubs. Especially considering how much money it costs to run two football clubs in an often-thankless Northern market. But the financial rewards of this risky investment have been prolific. Fifteen years of Victorian dominance. A three-peat to Hawthorn? A Richmond dynasty with 100,000+ members? Western Bulldogs & Melbourne fairytales? Collingwood, the biggest club in the country, winning last year's premiership? It's an AFL dream come true. But do Richmond win without Tom Lynch & Dion Prestia? Do the Bulldogs win without Tom Boyd, or Melbourne without Steven May? Do Collingwood win without Bobby Hill?"

(Another ad break, and more infomercials, this time on non-stick frying pans, with Harley Reid the volunteer to demonstrate how difficult it is to scrub the grease off an alternative product. Wow! Even he can't get that pan clean! He, and you at home, simply HAVE to try this brand new, state-of-the-art non-stick fry pan!)

"Glad you're still with us. Through our meticulous investigations and the research of some of the most brilliant minds in sports historiography, we've uncovered the truth about the AFL's Machiavellian intentions with their so-called "expansion clubs." But still not convinced? Let's take a trip back in time..."

(Whimsical Enya song plays)

"For well over a decade, the AFL had rejected many attempts by QAFL clubs at introducing an AFL team on the Gold Coast, the most famous of those was Southport's bid in 1996. The AFL rejected all of them. They finally started to show a change of heart when, in what would become the foundations of the Gold Coast Suns concept, they began considering relocating North Melbourne to the Gold Coast in 2007."

(Dramatic, dun-DUN-DUUUNNNN sound effect)

"Why is 2007 relevant, you ask? It was on the back of a sixth consecutive premiership by a non-Victorian team. Four of those six flags were won by Northern clubs. So after years and years of resistance to the idea of a Gold Coast-based team, was the AFL's sudden support for it an earnest effort to grow the game in the Northern states, or a pivot towards taming the Northern beast that was threatening to conquer the entire competition?"

"Before we close this case once and for all, I'll leave you with another strange event that occurred in 2007. That was also the year that the Sydney Swans & Brisbane Lions had cuts to their salary cap concessions, as signalled by the AFL three years earlier immediately after - you guessed it - Brisbane made their fourth grand final in a row and the AFL caved to Eddie McGuire & co's pleas about the rising power of the Northern clubs. This kickstarted a near-15 year period in the finals abyss for Brisbane, but the Swans were at least allowed to retain their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

Thank you for listening. Join me next week as we look further into how the AFL was actually responsible for 9/11."

(Screen fades to black. Writing appears on screen)

"In 2014, the Swans' COLA was revoked by the AFL."
(Another written message appears)

"In 2015, the Swans received a trade ban for following the rules."

(A third written message appears)

"In 2016, the AFL rigged a grand final against them."

(A fourth and final written message appears)

"And the AFL approved the Tonya Harding-ing of 3x All Australian Dan Hannebery."
