That’s it. I’ve basically soured on the whole award.

The way I see it:

Legitimate awards:
• Coleman - objective metric can’t argue
• AFLPA awards (the MVP, best first year, best captain, most courageous player) - very clear system voted by all of your peers. A great honour.
• AFL coaches awards - especially the best player award which has a clear and transparent voting system judged by the best minds in the game
• Norm Smith - such an amazing accolade to Admittedly, it’s a little vibesy but very rarely have they ever got it badly wrong. Clear and transparent voting system. Always one of the best parts of GF day.

Flawed awards:
• Brownlow - historic and still retains its glamour but there have been too many crazy results that it’s had a serious dent in its credibility. On the other hand it has a transparent voting system albeit 3,2,1 is a pretty flawed way to assess players’ impact. Coaches voting system is way better.
• Rising Star - media award based on vibes and hype but at least there’s a transparent system where we see who voted what. Bad picks more forgivable than Brownlow as you’re judging for potential stardom so it’s harder.

Compromised awards
• All Australian - media award based on vibes. No one knows how it’s selected. Panel of AFL administrators and media people seem to just pick it during a meeting.

AFLPA most valuable player is by far the most vibesy and not voted round-by-round but by players who don't even watch all of the games. It shouldn't be called most valuable player, it should be called good bloke award or something else.

I'd also say Rising Star - despite its name - is not an award based on "potential" stardom. It is an award based on performance to date by a young player, nothing more nothing less. It, like the Brownlow, is essentially a mifielder's award, even more so given very few non mids with AFL ready bodies will even have a sniff at winning.

Personally I rate the coaches award as the most accurate (for a variety of reasons) and the results stand up when you look back historically. I also see them rate players for defensive roles, key backs, forwards, rucks etc. They truly look at impact on game and both offensively and defensively IMO.

All Australian has made me ill for years. There is no system. It’s all on vibes.

I’m full of resentment over many many selections. There was a year (2013) when Minson was chosen over Goldstein that boils my blood to this day. 2014 when Lindsay Thomas was inexplicably left out. There was a season and I can’t be bothered looking up where I swear Ben Brown kicked more goals than two of the key forwards they went with.

if there’s to be a selection panel they must be required to watch every game or at least one person to be assigned to each match. There has to be some sort of SYSTEM. Maybe a voting system from a squad by position. Selection on vibes is simply not good enough.

The worst period was when wingers were consistently not selected in the team and they used the winger spot to squeeze in unlucky onballers. Thankfully that trend has gone away. That shit was outrageous.
Reckon AA should be put out to the fans to select.....you could argue that disparate size supporter bases would create bias, but I genuinely believe the football public who'd be bothered voting would be far more impartial than the panels that get rolled out each year. (Not without precedent, fans choose the MLB All Star teams and on the whole the larger franchises are not disproportionately represented!).

Watch out for those bloody gibbons - they attack! I was bitten by one in Thailand and now whenever there's a full moon I end up in a sweat and I get the urge to go running across the moors.

Dear Fox Footy,

Your corny previews, usually narrated by Matt Nable or some actor who might have been in Underbelly once, are terrible. They aren't worthy of being shown once, let alone as a feature of every single show as if they should win an award.

The one this week with Jack Riewoldt walking down a street gabbing on about Dustin Martin is especially cringeworthy.

Please stop inflicting these on us.

From everyone.

Never seen them but will fight for your right to bag them.

Yes but, but, but... he's at a 'big club' and on a Million dollars a year now...

Don't ruin the narrative bro!
Exactly;
- half decent at North - off Broadway, most of the media barely watch him play, but happy to screech about us getting 'overs' for him as compensation (despite it being nothing more or less than the formula provides)

- half decent at * - WOW! How amazing is this guy, what a shrewd move to recruit him, how could North let him go! (incredible how we can have both got 'overs' for him in compensation while simultaneously being too good for us to have let go!)

Perfect snapshot of all that is wrong with the All-Australian team, players hyped up at big name clubs always in the conversation over players just playing good worthy footy! And also, who cares about genuine pockets and flankers, just cram in more midfielders out of position, after all poor midfielders are so often overlooked in most other awards! 🙄
