That’s it. I’ve basically soured on the whole award.
The way I see it:
Legitimate awards:
• Coleman - objective metric can’t argue
• AFLPA awards (the MVP, best first year, best captain, most courageous player) - very clear system voted by all of your peers. A great honour.
• AFL coaches awards - especially the best player award which has a clear and transparent voting system judged by the best minds in the game
• Norm Smith - such an amazing accolade to Admittedly, it’s a little vibesy but very rarely have they ever got it badly wrong. Clear and transparent voting system. Always one of the best parts of GF day.
Flawed awards:
• Brownlow - historic and still retains its glamour but there have been too many crazy results that it’s had a serious dent in its credibility. On the other hand it has a transparent voting system albeit 3,2,1 is a pretty flawed way to assess players’ impact. Coaches voting system is way better.
• Rising Star - media award based on vibes and hype but at least there’s a transparent system where we see who voted what. Bad picks more forgivable than Brownlow as you’re judging for potential stardom so it’s harder.
Compromised awards
• All Australian - media award based on vibes. No one knows how it’s selected. Panel of AFL administrators and media people seem to just pick it during a meeting.
AFLPA most valuable player is by far the most vibesy and not voted round-by-round but by players who don't even watch all of the games. It shouldn't be called most valuable player, it should be called good bloke award or something else.
