Take us apart? Did we lose?

And how long ago was that?

Mass is a bit player with no defensive nous. He's okay at times at Hawthorne because they're a cute team holding a few rejects with duct tape that no one actually takes seriously. That's fine. But he was never going to be in our premiership starting side and that was clear then as it is now.
Haha. Our premiership side, good one.

Hawthorn's percentage is now just over 100%.

They started a rebuild at the end of 2022 with a list in disarray and without the pieces like Saad and Daniher to trade into the top 10.

We took 3 top 10 picks 2 years earlier, starting a rebuild that 24 months earlier, and they've just flown past us.

If Massimo isn't in out next premiership team we're not winning a premiership in the next 10 to 17 years. Honestly, the club is still so incapable of seeing the forest for the trees we are probably only half way through one of those legendary ruts.

Hawks are a great example of a side that make up for lacking in couple of areas by doing the little things extraordinarily well.

They block, they shepherd, they don’t get sucked in to the honeypot, and they stick their tackles.

A team that was built on the actual fundamentals of football also has an idea of where they are going and what they need.
Core skills of Tackling, kicking, handballing, shepherding, kicking the ball to advantage.

All the little things that should be baseline before you even get to running patterns and defence and offensive gameplans.

Watching Hawthorne playing, it's pretty impressive. Their list is worse than ours but are a better team.

It's just the simple things. They get the ball and instantly look forward and go. We get it, look backwards, sideways and then backwards; forwards is last resort.

The main thing they have over us is they aren't weak as piss.

I don’t think many would argue they have the least talent of let’s say the top 13 excluding the stragglers at the bottom but they’re giving it a red hot back purely off the back of just really good basics.

Devil is in the detail.

Do you even remember the state we were in just before 2023? We have already accepted that the Rutten era was botched.

Going into 2023 we were on our knees and a laughing stock of the competition. Our biggest priority was getting a sensible coach who at least knew which way was up, and fixing our off-field areas/cleaning out the place. That objective was complete.

We've only just started the effort and intensity phase/footy habit related stuff in 2024, in mind you, a year that was supposed to have us fighting for the spoon by now, according to many pundits before it.

Our situation is different. We had non-footy stuff to deal with before any footy stuff could be taken seriously. Old habits was what we had to use 2024 for, and based on what has been shown so far, we've made a lot of in-roads in regards to that. There is a brand there, and effort is evident. Moments in prior years when we'd be down by 30 or more, we'd lower our heads and bow out to 80-100 point drubbings. They were not late efforts to get it back to being in the lead and being in the vicinity of possibly winning it by the final siren. Daylight compared to how we used to be at least up until now.

You're acting as if we weren't predicted to be below Adelaide, Hawks, Doggies, Suns, Saints, Tigers, Pies, etc for most of the year. They're lower than us by as late as Round 19 in an even season because we notched an L to most of their tallies. You're doing a massive disservice to the boys by speaking as if noticeable improvement in effort hasn't been made or putting unrealistic expectations on them that wouldn't have existed had they not spent 14 rounds in the top 8 and 9 rounds in the top 4 this year through no effort but their own. If you expected this team which is a year and a half into a fresh development cycle to be mixing it with the best and not be prone to lulls then you need to get your footy brain checked.

Hawthorns gameplan is built around risk, ours is built around being safe.

Contrary to popular nuffie belief, being risky isn't what wins you premierships.

There is nothing wrong with being safe, you just gotta learn how to do it right.

All out attack equals flashes in the pan. Accountable and consistent defense equals consistency in finals and flags. We were the former many times and we've seen that movie before. Exciting in the moment but doesn't get you where you wanna be.

You’ve associated taking risks with the all out attack run and gun downhill skiing football that we used to play.

It’s more nuanced than that.

If the discussion is about our seemingly stagnant mediocrity V another team's rebuilde, probably worth considering they've conceded less points than us when trying to throw shade on their ability to defend.

Mass is shit and was a liability with no defensive game to his body. Has one good game and you're all tooting his horn. Recency bias is the clear indicator of NPC behaviour.
Nah, Massimo has been good all year. He may not be the greatest defender, but we have plenty like that. He is an elite kicker of the footy and we only have Merrett. Couldn’t believe we let him go in the first place. Still he’s dead to me because he now wears that shit and piss jumper.

This actually sounds like us. On track to me our nemesis again.

Hawthorn have blown past us. If you can't see that after watching the last month of football from both sides I don't know what to say.

It might be hard to swallow, but they made hard calls on senior players, their coach communicated that clearly through selection and in the media. They've established a brand of attacking football on the back of pressure and tackling. They are a professional modern football club and if their most recent dynasty didn't make that clear the next one will just be more salt on the wound.

I get that people don't want to accept that, imagine how upset we are going to be when we realise that in 2026 North will have gone past us and in 2028 when the Tigers do the same.

This club refuses to evolve and make no-brainer decisions at any level.

Thank god we're no longer a laughing stock.
