Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 3) - The Biggest Loser

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

It was unfathomably dumb

It trumps Massie on Franklin imho. Sits just below the decision to go on a mental strength training camp and the secret side deals contract.

Nestled comfortably in the top three club all time howlers.
Can I nominate "19th Man" marketing strategy and a whole heap of white clash guernseys to that horrendous list?

Watching that show that was on Amazon it also seemed like a lot of our players didn't understand what Nicks was asking for until Sloane told them to start taking notes during team meetings and studying more in their own time.

That infamous footage from the game against North where they were moving Gatorade bottles on the floor because the players didn't know where they were supposed to be as an example.

Players to take notes and study later? WTF.

I’m convinced at times the smarter and more talented footballers in our team take it upon themselves to change game plan mid-stream which explains how in one game our game styles can be different and it depends which players have the ball in hand.

The play from Hinge to Fog against Essendon was not part of the game plan.

I actually think there is even a better reason.

The season was abandoned after the first round due to Covid-19 and we never knew when it was coming back. Nicks being the good bloke coach probably didn’t instil levels of fitness required during the break and so when the players came back, we returned in probably the worst physical conditioning of all the footy sides. Everyone wants to make excuses because first time coach, game plan but I believe this was a major reason.

It is no coincidence that we improved in the back end of the season as our fitness levels probably improved.

Now lets now consider that we believe Burgess has improved our overall fitness levels. Since Burgess left Melbourne it is a shadow of its 2018-2021 form, how we would be placed now with similar reduction with lower fitness levels?
I seem to remember there was an interview with Sloane or someone where he said they didnt think the season would happen so fitness levels were allowed to slip. Didnt happen at other clubs. Unprofessional by players and coaches.

It didnt make any sense then, and makes less now.
You could've maybe made an argument for it at the end of last year, and in hindsight it would've been a bad decision, but not as bad as doing it when the team was playing badly and hadnt won at the start of this year.
There was no evidence there was going to be 'noise' about it, not much evidence that he was that great, team was playing shite due to HIS game plan, the only sensible course of action was to wait & see. I just don't get the rush. And if we hadn't rushed it, I'm not sure even our board would re-sign him now

Also an issue when you have lots of young players come in who don’t know the expected standards like some senior players would have
