It probably needs another thread, but there's no question that the names we choose now reflect on who we are today, even if the person lived 300 years ago. It says a lot about us if this is the name we choose to celebrate, despite being aware of the owner's views.
I understand that most of us didn't know anything about him before and that the name was associated with a place and not a person. But now we know. "We used to not know" is a strange defence.
This is an opportunity to recognise a couple of the wrongs of the past and at least make a statement that we no longer support them. And that that is important enough to us that we will do it even if its inconvenient.
It is a nickname though, ultimately. It's not actually the name of the oval or the training facilities. It's reflective of the location. To have that changed it would be the responsibility of the local gov? The state gov? I dont know who names streets.

Should we just stop calling it arden st in light of this new information?

Change it to Shinboner St and Shinboner Stadium :)

I always find it a bit ridiculous that we judge people who lived 200 - 300 years ago by today's social standards. It's like chalk and cheese. Without knowing anything about him, I'm assuming he did do something positive at some stage in his life to have a street named after him if that is in fact the case? To most people it's just a street name anyway, nothing more.
Doesn’t matter how long ago something has occurred. The ability to perceive right from wrong is something that transcends time. John Batman, Melbourne’s ‘founder’ as we were taught in school in the ‘70s was involved in aboriginal massacres. A lovely fellow all round he died from syphilis . Why should we celebrate people without knowing whether or not they are worth celebrating?

I disagree. What was right or wrong 200 years ago is very different in some cases today.

It is different.

And the conclusion to all of this is to just abandon the country.

Maybe knock all our cities down too.

They were all founded and built by people who committed unpalatable acts today. And built on prime indigenous land.

Give it all back, and if you’re white you need to carry the shame of your ancestors’ legacy.

This is a slippery slope to go down. You'll struggle to find anyone where no one will find something offensive about them.

Whether you like it or not, a lot of things are named after people who made a significant contribution to the foundation of our country and cities which we benefit from today. You and some others may not support them but you need to understand your views don't represent everyone. Up until now, no one cared the slightest about Arden (still don't know anything about him because to be honest, it's not important to me), until some crappy journalist from The Age decided to dig up some dirt on him from 200 years ago.

Yep. And then we'll all jump back on boats and go.... somewhere?

Ah yes, a bit of homophobia is just what this debate needs.

From what i can tell he was a failed newspaper owner, failed farmer, died in ballarat as a failed gold digger.

You just don't get it, removing his name will destroy civilization as we know it. And the effort that this gargantuan task entails will prevent all government services and efforts in any other area of life.

The removal of racist campaigners' names from public landmarks is always going to be a difficult case to prosecute when we literally elect racist campaigners in the here and now.
Especially when people refuse to draw a distinction between collective expressions of public sorrow and their own personal sorrow.
It is all about me me me, after all

Just checking, our game in Bunbury is a day game, yeah?

As a mitigation against future possible possum related power outages, I hope they are smart enough to keep the roof open when North host the WCE eagles at Bunbury next season. Closing the roof could be a disaster.
