Without seeing the P&L, my guess would be this is almost certainly the Arden St Precinct redvelopement being amortised. It's really the only large cap ex the club would have.

And as far as the club goes, to be breaking even in these dire times, with a net increase in home game attendance at Marvel when the team has statistically been the worst ever over a 5-year stretch is a huge win. The club has no other major objective than to continue to exist as far as finanicals go, so running net neutral (or therabouts) means they are squeezing ever last drop out of what money they do have. This points to a well-run organisation. The fact it is well-run without pokies is another key factor in why this result is so great.
Not to deliberately dampen things, but we'd be absolutely ****ed without the AFL's needs-based funds distribution system, wouldn't we

Can someone who has a better grasp of AFL Club Financials explain simply whether our overall net profit of 50k is something to be impressed about?
Of course being in the black is better than being in the red, but with operating revenue of 50m, it seems incredibly small.

Also the operating profit before amortisation was close to 1m, what exactly is this money going toward? I thought we were debt free, or is the money going toward the new redevelopment?
It could be from the resurfacing works we did earlier in the year.

Yes - but also if the fixture was an even draw perhaps not? There's a number of reasons why the distribution system is a good idea, and letting the AFL maximise revenue while keeping teams like us afloat is one of them.

Agree it's a good idea (about the only positive development of Demetriou's entire tenure) but I can't help but keep quiet when the topic of club revenue is raised in any footy conversation to which I'm privy. Feels a bit wrong to claim 'profits' when the league has to accommodate us.

Course, the flipside is that people with genuinely vindictive agendas against that sort of thing can **** right off. I'll never be ashamed of supporting a small club but I'm not gonna elbow my way in to boast about 'profits.' There's a healthy sliver of middle ground there imo

The fixture, and the maximizing of afl profits, limits our ability to make additional money through sponsorship and exposure. Our supporters also pay more on average to watch games on tv, with subscriptions to kayo and foxtel required.

Fair enough. Though we haven't helped ourselves with our trail of explosive diarrhea-laced destruction, but I spose that when all things are equal and we're doing well, we still don't quite get the exposure that a big team in our position might. How I long for the heady days of 2016. Looking back, we had a run of 4/5 Thursday/Friday night timeslots. How good

At the same time Carlton were shit and had 6 Friday nights, and multiple Thursday and Saturday nights. So I doubt it will change in the future.
It also limits our ability to attract young fans and neutrals when are going well.
What we get is the least we deserve to prop up the afl and ‘big clubs’.

The point is that it is irrelevant, no matter how much we "help ourselves" we will never get the run of others. That's the point. Personally I disagree entirely with the CBF rigged fixture system, it arguably had a place stabilising the league post 90's as it stabilised from the VFL - where a large number of clubs were struggling - but it should have been phased out by now and efforts made to maximise all teams in the league.

An Arden St name change?

An Arden St name change?

I always find it a bit ridiculous that we judge people who lived 200 - 300 years ago by today's social standards. It's like chalk and cheese. Without knowing anything about him, I'm assuming he did do something positive at some stage in his life to have a street named after him if that is in fact the case? To most people it's just a street name anyway, nothing more.

Yeah we’re bad now, but we’ve been competitive consistently for the prior 30 years. We’ve given a lot and the bigger clubs have taken and leveraged more. I wouldn’t give the AFL any credit for equalisation it keeps us small and the bigger clubs have clubs big.

Figured it would be named after a town or village somewhere 🤷‍♂️
Or just like, street names are nouns? Is smith st fitzroy named after one of specific smith? What about the other smith streets?

Exactly. And for that reason the campaigners can keep on tipping money in if they're never going to give us a lick of the icecream.

In fact, I actually don't think it goes far enough. Our lack of exposure makes it difficult to attract FA's. Small market teams should be given an extra draft pick at the end of the first round. That way they can get more young talent in to build around.

Finally someone is addressing this important matter.

How else are we going to be able to fix the pressing issues we face as a society like cost of living, war, religious zealots, climate change etc until we go back in history and put a microscope on every street name to ensure they aren’t named after someone that said something offence 300 years ago.

I mean ffs, 300 years is less than a millennia. Might as well have happened yesterday.

It probably needs another thread, but there's no question that the names we choose now reflect on who we are today, even if the person lived 300 years ago. It says a lot about us if this is the name we choose to celebrate, despite being aware of the owner's views.
I understand that most of us didn't know anything about him before and that the name was associated with a place and not a person. But now we know. "We used to not know" is a strange defence.
This is an opportunity to recognise a couple of the wrongs of the past and at least make a statement that we no longer support them. And that that is important enough to us that we will do it even if its inconvenient.
