A bit of both imo. We abandoned the attacking gamestyle that had served us well for the first 3 quarters and tried to defend the lead, and in doing so invited port to throw caution to the wind (which they did) and attack us relentlessly
A coaching stuff-up more on Mitchell’s behalf imo, likely...
From what I remember of the chatter in WA during last years trade period when the swans chased him, Barrass just did not want to leave WA under any circumstances - Eagles and Swans were both very interested in the movement.
I’d be surprised if that’s changed much, and suspect this is being...
I think point for pound the bulldogs have a more naturally talented player list, especially at the elite end.
That said, I think the Hawks brand / game-plan is better executed on a weekly basis than the Dogs, which leads to the trust you talk about.
At their best I think the dogs could beat...
Will Day has been the other standout, but is coming from a long way back compared to other midfielders so AA is very unlikely. Best case for him would be a squad nomination I think.
The other player who has had a quietly, consistently good season is Sam Frost. But given his reputation which at...
I don't think this will be a 7-year contract scenario - that would have him coming out of contract at 31, which is an awkward time to be renegotiating. A 5-year contract would see him come out at 29, where he'd likely have a lot more bargaining power that he's got 3-4 years of top football left...
GWS's list management model has been to retain their top half-dozen or so players at just about any cost - see Coniglio, Whitfield, Taylor, Greene, Kelly etc - and to then pad the list around these pillars. Cameron is really the only one who they weren't able to convince to stay with a blank...
That's a ridiculous evaluation of both players.
Smith was a prime contributor in getting the Bulldogs to a GF in his 3rd season, kicking 10 goals in the finals series from midfield / half-forward.
Ward is unable to break into a side that was bottom 6 until this weekend in his 3rd season...
If Clarkson takes this North rabble from complete basket case to premiers (and in doing so, coach his 5th flag), he'll be right in the conversation for it. Only 4 others with 5 or more in VFL/AFL history, the last of whom was Norm Smith
I don't think anyones arguing that. But he can't be in a top 10 list based on output. Neither could Conway on the back of 2 games, regardless of his 2 games (I didn't see last years, but he was excellent on Monday IMO).
Sort of, but also left because he wasn't a Clarkson favourite. Effectively held a small grudge against him as he was a father-son who'd been 'gifted' his opportunity. So while fans might've been keen, I don't think Clarkson (and by extension, the club) were too fussed about him leaving.
B to B+
Not because of the prospective quality of the players who we brought in, but rather because our draft was a little bit on railroads given the two F/S picks.
Thrilled with Watson, but we picked him where he was projected to be picked. So it's not like we've picked up a value slider or...
