Quality Players who've left Hawthorn on own terms

Barnard was part of the Salmon trade, I watched him one day take ten marks against Essendon in the third quarter after coming on at half time. The following year he was a bomber.

Yep. We won - we lost - Essendon won - Hawthorn won

Barnard won Salmon won.

Would have to be one of the most successful trade deals between two clubs ever because we really needed Salmon at the time. Two club best and fairest. What more can you say.

Barnard - A premiership with Essendon and a very good and aggressive player for them.

PS. Todman was a champion. Tulloch was a freak. If he had not come down with that stomach virus, many would be saying who the hell is Black Caviar. Could have been the only three year old to win a Melbourne Cup. But, how good was it to have two of the all time great champions going head to head at the same time. Half the pub was for Todman and half for Tulloch. Do you remember Tulloch's comeback? It was a weight for age race and Lord was the champion at that time. Many thought Tulloch could not come back after two years of illness and therefor Lord was the bookies favourite, but Tulloch the public's favourite.
Entering the strait Tulloch and Lord had ran away from the rest of the field. I will never forget the caller as they ran down the strait. Lord a nose in front - Tulloch now a nose in front - Lord - Tulloch - Lord - Lord - Tulloch by half a length. I was in tears.

To this day, I maintain that to be the most memorable moment in Australian sport. I was not alone with my tears. Even those who backed Lord were cheering because they knew they were part of history and it was something they would never again experience. Possibly two of Australia's best Racehorses at the same time.... Yet we were cheated. Todman retired to the stud and Tulloch with a virus that would have killed any other.

Isn't it great to be old enough enough to be there. The poor buggers of today have to content themselves with Anthony Mundine beating some stumble-bum whom his old man would have beaten with both hands tied behind his back.

Oh, and watching Hawthorn winning Premierships. There has to be something good with contemporary sport.

Todman was named after Todman Avenue. Todman Avenue was part of a property sub division by George Todman.
George Todman was a successful Tobacco merchart, who came from Manchester while still a boy. George's father died young but his grandfather was a publician in Oldham. The publician's brother is my ancestor.

How many numbers can we say that about ?

#2 - Mew, Holland, Roughead
#3 - Matthews, Condon, Hay, Lewis
#5 - Collins, Harford, Mitchell
#9 - Dipper, Crawford, Burgoyne
#24 - Knights, Langford, Croad, Cox, Croad, Stratton

#11 - Buckenara, Jarman, et al.

Bump

We can probably add Tom Mitchell in these discussions now. Interesting reading up on past players and what may have caused their departures. other players of note just recently Issac Smith and Brad Hill.

Josh Kennedy left to Sydney to get more game time. Was always big on keeping him at the hawks.

Dean Anderson left to St Kilda where he played another 60 odd games. If he had stayed his son would be in thr Brown and gold today. Ben Allan another one where we have lost multigenerational bloodlines.

Brad Scott left to play with his brother in Brisbane. Quality player for sure.

Gary Ablett to Geelong. In a sliding door universe he stayed a hawk and his son Gary junior lines up alongside Cyril Rioli, Buddy Franklin and Jarryd Roughead in a stacked forward line.

I'd say we're net up having been a destination club for many years.
Jack Gunston, Brian Lake, Danny Frawley, Josh Gibson, Ben McEvoy, Paul Salmon, Tom Mitchell, Shaun Burgoyne, Karl Amon Jack Ginnivan, Chad Wingard form a long list of quality players who came to Hawthorn from other clubs.

The question remains, where will their kids want to play when they have a choice between two clubs?

Sort of, but also left because he wasn't a Clarkson favourite. Effectively held a small grudge against him as he was a father-son who'd been 'gifted' his opportunity. So while fans might've been keen, I don't think Clarkson (and by extension, the club) were too fussed about him leaving.

Wasn't Ablett pushed due to behaviour issues?

He was sent away due to his issues. I am not certain Hawks wanted rid of him permanently. However, Ablett had no love for the club. I watched him play a representative game for O&M. He was good without being exceptional. He found God during his absence and decided Geelong was to be his home where he just blossomed as a footballer. At least, this is how I remember it.

I was always told he came in and just didn't fit in with the structure and culture of the club. That may have changed had he stuck around, but he found Geelong a much better fit.

Strange he never had the love for the club considering the rich family history with Geoff, Kevin and Michael Tuck.

Young Gary was a little F.I.T.H. He was the wayward son. AS you said, he didn't fit in. I understood that is why he was sent away for a while. And, yes, he may have found Geelong a better fit. I also think it was odd given the family links, but I believe he was than a little pissed going to Myrtleford.

FITH - F***ed In The Head.

I'll add Robran.

I wonder what the numbers would whittle down to though if we added the caveat 'became better players after they left'.

In my lifetime I could name Ablett, Barnard, Hill, JK3 and McPharlin (and maybe Chick). The rest never lived up to their heights at the Hawks.

You mean Brad Hill? I reckon he was pretty bloody good at the Hawks.

Darren Jarman - two more flags & AAs after he left

Paul Hudson - 2 x leading GK & AA at the Dogs

Ryan Burton
Zac Dawson
Marc Pittonett

I heard that he liked to visit peoples houses when they weren't home. Allan Jeans was a Police sergeant.

A season up at Myrtleford, where his uncle lived. Len Ablett kicked 108 for Myrtleford in 1946.

During the 1983 O&MFL finals series Gary's wife became pregnant with their first child (Gary Jr. born 14/5/1984) so he was looking for some security.
