In terms of making the most of what we had, I think we did really well.

We turned - 5, 44, 47, 49, 62, 63

Into - Watson, McCabe, Ryan, Dear and 2x F4's (tied to Carlton and Port)

Got two first round talents for pick 5 and two picks in the 40's.

We improved our hand for next year (albeit slightly) by moving on picks we weren't going to use. We were always taking Dear, but I think we got a free-hit with Ryan as if a bid on McCabe came in earlier we would have missed out.

Three of the picks will address areas of need on paper, a small forward, a KPD and a KPF.

I think a B, but the club was stoked with a lot of their late picks so I'll back them in and give us a B+.
Got the best and most versatile player in Reid, probably the 2nd best key forward (albeit with consistency issues) and then two other midfielders (an inside and outside) is not usually what we'd do. We avoided previous traps such as Archie Roberts (HBF with midfield potential) and concentrated on our midfield.
H Reid and Hall could be plug-and-play next season.
Oh, and we didn't get another ruck, which is great, because I feel like that would've undermined our selection of Barnett last year.

Is Wells really any better than anyone else at finding gems? Has probably had the most gifts of any recruiter in the history of the game…

Tom Stewart - Pick 40
Brad Close - Rookie Pick 14
Jack Henry - Rookie Pick 16
Mark O'Connor - Cat B Rookie
Gryan Miers - Pick 57
Mark Blicavs - Cat B Rookie
Zach Guthrie - Rookie Pick 33
Jake Kolodjashnij - Pick 41
Tom Atkins - Rookie Pick 11
Jed Bews - Pick 86

All Premiership players and all taken Pick 40 or lower. I'd say he's pretty good at what he does.

Solid B. I’d have loved Cooper Simpson at our second pick, but not to be. Quite happy with the picks they have taken, and also quite happy to keep our F1 even if Curtin would have been a good pairing with Reid.

Harley Reid is exciting and looking forward to seeing him develop & Clay Hall should play plenty of footy early. Reid needs a good few summers in the gym but he’s a mobile skilled 203cm. Something to work with.

Picked up some pace in Johnston and Loch Rawlinson.

Outside my club- I Quite liked Essendons draft and thought Geelong had a well rounded draft all told. Fremantle coming in late walked away with some terrific footballers.

B

+ve
  • Took Reid and therefore didn't budge and give up 1 for a pou pou platter of later picks.
  • Didn't part with our F1 which realistically will be worth top 2 and give us access to a player with higher upside than what Curtin will provide.
  • Liked taking the tall KPF project. Better to stash him and develop and stink again next year to help with that F1 than grab a ready to go mid that may help us win another game or two now but ultimately have a low ceiling.
  • Hall looks pretty tidy and looks like he can run both ways, which we definitely need. Nice left foot too.
-ve
  • Would have been good to have grabbed Collard.
  • Difficult to 'win' the draft with the inequity. So many other teams had more successful seasons than us last year and yet had greater access to picks.

B to B+

Not because of the prospective quality of the players who we brought in, but rather because our draft was a little bit on railroads given the two F/S picks.

Thrilled with Watson, but we picked him where he was projected to be picked. So it's not like we've picked up a value slider or anything of that nature.

Our only other 'live' pick is Bodie Ryan, who I like the look of and fills a need.

Ultimately, I think this would be one of the easier drafts of our recruiting team

Draft alone: C+ We got some great players, but being academy picks it was purely an 'as expected' result.

Draft/Trade period as a whole: A+ We got the points required and banked some great future picks in the process.

People can whine about academy picks all they want, but it was the trading of picks where we really did well this year.

He is a guru at spotting talent , one of , if not the best in his field . 🔫. By the way, keep Jhye in cotton wool next season , want him cherry ripe when he arrives at the Pies in 2025. 😉

D

A 170cm small forward that will get found out against the hard bodies in AFL.

2 F/S, not much effort went into recruiting these 2, and Bodie Ryan that will never see a senior game.

Will languishing around the bottom mid year and hopefully that means Mitchell gets the ass and the recruiters get when overhaul too. Still waiting for top 10 picks DGB and Mackenzie to show us what our amazing recruiters saw in them….

Gold Coast win by a fair margin,

not just the first rounders but grabbed some depth with former North youngster Jack Mahoney and Fothergill-Round medalist Sam Cloeshy,

Sam Day cause that's the whole point of the pre season/rookie drafts and then passed which I am assuming leaves open some SSP spots for train on players

Harsh. That small forward will be a pleasure to watch and will bring people through the gates.

I would be happy to have Brodie Ryan on Geelongs list.

Real G's move in silence like Lasagne. Dodo is loud, Wells is the silent assassin and we don't just say he's elite because he's from our team...dude has an incredible track record.

Geelong is the only team I'd trust to turn him around if the rumors are true. Always the most proffessional and discipline of the lot. Maybe Pies too with Macrae at the helm.
Yeah we rarely take on players with bad attitudes or bad history UNLESS there is good structure around them to keep them in line.

I didn't want anything to do with the kid but that's just me, the kids we have taken all look like they have good leadership qualities which is important for down the track.

B+
Would have liked North to try and get Curtin by moving up the Draft order however they did say they were going with 5 selections and kept to their word.
They also addressed some of our issues as well ..
With all the assistance you got to enter the draft you could only manage a b+. That’s disappointing for your fans.

Based on the picks we had, I'd probably rate our draft a B.

Largely drafted for needs and also around the fact our recent/future higher rated NGA and FS players are smalls - WAshcroft and Fletcher last year, LAshcroft and Marshall next year.

We essentially had no young/developing marking forwards (aside from soon to be 27yo Ryan), so Morris and Ryan fit that demographic. Question remains whether they have the athletic traits to offset being slightly shorter for KPFs (as you'd expect given the picks they were taken at).

Zakostelsky seems like a classic low risk, high reward pick. Reminds me a bit of Noah Balta - great athlete, questionable football IQ.

Based on the 3 min clip that's been posted, Torrent looks like a neat left foot kick and demonstrates some good agility to get himself into space to utilise his skills. Wing is another position of need too.
