I have been following Freo for 30 years and this is by far the best bunch of under 25 year olds they have ever accumulated.
Treacy, Amiss, Jackson, Young, Serong, Clark are stars, while Chapman, Frederick and Walker are already good AFL players. Johnson, O Driscoll, Draper and Sturt have showed...
We absolutely would not trade Treacy for Reid. Treacy is currently the most important player on our list IMO. A trade for Warner with Treacy would keep you up at night and be a tougher decision, but I still think we would stick with Treacy.
Who are the big 4 these days:
Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond?
I reckon players are going to give up on Essendon soon.....if they haven't already. For some reason the Bulldogs always manage to get good players in the door.
Probably wishful thinking but Warner could go the same way as McDonald if Erasmus or Johnson step up this year.
Here's hoping. I kinda think if we bring in Kozzie we've got the team to go all the way.
Young can absolutely tear teams apart. He's a better midfielder than the 2 Freo guys who made the AA team and squad. I have also watched Cerra closely. He's a good player, but not in the same league as Hayden Young IMO.
I reckon Warner would be the best player on our list bar possibly Josh Treacy.
The problem is I just don’t know how we can afford him without something drastic like trading out Darcy.
Probably one of the worst calls Tim Gossage has made in 30 years of sports journalism. The funny thing is he doesn’t own it, instead doubling down on if asked.
Who are the first medium/ small forwards picked next year. Reckon it will be:
Bolton
Freddy
Switta
Sturt
Walters
Banfield
Narkle.
So, he’s coming from a long way back to get a game.
Hang on a sec, Tim Gossage has it on solid authority that Freo would have definitely taken Berry or Allen if they were at our pick.
Who to believe? The guru who has every clubs list manager on speed dial and has correctly picked the top 10 in the draft for the last 5 years, or the flog on...
Remember the pre season we did match sims non stop starting from November? It didn’t work. From memory we ended up running out of steam and finishing in the bottom 4. It might have been 2016 or 17 or something like that.
Just interesting the different approaches and ideas taken in pre...
I'll give you Heeney, but where are all these other incredible Academy players? Also, Cola hasn't been a thing for a while now. Personally, I think their success is more from shooting the lights out at the draft, the likes of Parker, Warner and Gulden being second round picks (or later) and...
Interesting analogy with the cricket. If anything I guess it proves that you do need guts as a coach to not select these guys in the best 22 - which is the equivalent of Smith and Warner not being bid on in the IPL.
There really does need to be a hard conversation with all 3 of these guys to...
It seemed to regress a bit this year - or cop a bit more negative publicity from the media.
My team, Freo, gets plenty of supporters to the ground but it looks pretty darn sparse out there for quite a few other teams.
I think the AFL might have a problem on its hands with AFLW because I just...
Ryan Pearce Walker
Chappy Cox Clark
Sharp Young Noddy
Freddy Treacy Bolton
Jackson Amiss Switta
Darcy Serong Brayshaw
Johnson, Erasmus, Sturt, Draper
Sub: Wagner.
Will JLO have the balls to not pick the veterans round 1? With the exception of Draper, all of these guys have at least 3...
Why the bloody hell is this guy not on the West Coast list?
Even if his preference is Collingwood, a decent manager should have talked him around. If he put in a decent pre season there is every chance he'd be playing AFL in round 1.
My argument is really simple. It appears really hard for guys drafted as midfielders to perform well in the forward line in their first few years when playing there.
Will Cooper Simpson disprove this theory? He might, but it doesn’t look promising so far.
You could make the argument that...
You car sales analogy is absolute codswallop. We have drafted 25 midfielders in the past 10 years. None (bar Freddy) have been much chop when played in the forward line in their first few years. It's really not that complicated to understand that the odds of Murphy Reid (who is drafted as a...
Fine, let's just start the goal posts like this then - has there been any player that we drafted as a midfielder in the last 10 years that has performed well as a forward? If the answer is no (or maybe 1) then I'd say the chances of Murphy Reid playing well there are slim to none. (Regardless...
This might be the only time in AFL history someone has been selected to play AFL without the team watching a single video or game of the player. Sounds crazy I know but this is the Gold Coast we are talking about.
I agree that few shoot the lights out in any position in their first year. History has show that it is harder for new players to impact in the forward line - particularly ones that are not drafted as specialist forwards.
Mate, it's not really a pivot. We are both Dockers supporters so why not stay relevant to our team. If a young midfielder has not played well in the forward line for us in the last 10 years (when drafted) then the odds that Reid will play well there are pretty low. It's surely not that...
It's going to be absolutely fascinating to compare Richmond and West Coast in future years. Richmond cleared the decks and went full rebuild mode (you could argue their hand was forced but they didn't have to let go of contracted players) while West Coast topped up on 3 decent 26-29 year olds...
it always amazes me how kids can get drafted (even high up in the first round) without being able to use their opposite foot.
If they were hell bent on being AFL footballers, you'd think they would put time into it. Also staggering that the pathways that lead to AFL don't seem to pick up on it...
