0. Richmond v West Coast - definitely some bias there, and wouldn't be top spot for me if I wasn't a supporter - but very informative game for both sides. The first two rounds for both teams have involved opponents that have been predicted to be fighting for one of the bottom one or two spots in...
Hard to say - given they'll be in the top 8 come next week it'll be technically true, but it depends on how they perform and end up. Right now the Squiggle has them finishing 12th.
Collingwood has basically lost 2 winnable games now - they've had extended periods of dominance in both, but haven't been able to translate it on the scoreboard. I tipped the Bulldogs last week and thought they'd win comfortably - Collingwood made it close, and the only thing that really stopped...
A professional football team will not give up on the possibility of finals until it's a mathematical impossibility, or at least an extreme long-shot. I question the attitude of any club that would be looking at the stats of a team going 0-5, let alone a team going 0-2, and saying "meh, let's...
If they were to win by more than a goal or two they might be a bit more complacent - and they did end up winning by about 3 goals, so hopefully that's enough. :-)
Bit worried - if Richmond don't win, or win a close one, they might come out breathing fire.
They're a team that's capable of playing well, even if they don't a lot of the time
That wasn't the current finals system. As you mentioned, 5th and 6th were able to get a second chance, which is why Adelaide's premiership from 5th or 6th actually involved a loss in the finals; something that couldn't happen today.
I did qualify with "if I'm not mistaken" - but basically, what...
2015 was a bit of an illusion; a top 4 team from the previous year that had a specific focus to start the year with a bang, which they did - and then they trailed off; basically, returning to their average. They fell into the finals (keep this in mind - they would have been fifth if Houli didn't...
Interesting post - I love me some stats. :-)
Still, a few things:
1) No team is currently 0-2, so they all have that going in their favour.
2) Before last year, no team under the current final's system had won the premiership from outside the top 4, let alone made the grand final. So the...
I'm quickly re-learning that people are incredibly quick to write-off teams that lost, and stitch up teams for the top 4.
If that's you, settle down. It's week one. When you're 1-0, there are 22 games left to get the ~7+ losses required to miss the top 4. Likewise, if you're 0-1, there are...
Jeebus, people are so quick to plot out an entire season based on a round 1 game.
Crows had a good game, GWS had a bad game - result is what it is.
Both teams have good line-ups, and the Crows showed the pre-season predictors what they're capable of when they put in a good team-wide...
Let's keep one thing clear - the teams that do make the top 4 are generally the teams that have the mettle to win at least some of the tough, close games against good opposition. Winning or losing those close games can be the difference between, say, 4th and 9th.
However good the list may be...
As an Eagles supporter, saw a few comments this week about how the Eagles had only won one first round game away from home since 2006 - then looked into the past 10 years and saw that context matters; pretty much every year they performed in the first round roughly around where they final ladder...
Can't get a really good measure on Geelong from this one - they look like they're having some difficulty with their forward line (maybe I'm misremembering, but it feels like they haven't had too many kick to mark to set shot on goal), but that could be Fremantle applying defensive pressure...
Some good stuff today, but really didn't like Nelson - pretty sure he straight up coughed up a goal at one point, and was for me the iffyiest player to have around the ball at any given time.
Will be good to have a home game next week, and looking forward to players like Duggan, Sheed and...
Great game thus far, and so much better than yesterday. Bulldogs showing how damaging they can be when they get it and can run well; Collingwood showing the skills of their midfield and putting in a lot of effort, and probably deserve to be in front.
Mayne seems to be really wanting to earn his...
Probably. I know they have to 'hype it up' for the home audience, but geez the commentators like to get swept up in the moment. Like talking about Dusty winning the Brownlow after one game - sure, 3 votes at the start will help, but he's going to need about 20+ more to win it and you can't say...
Score seems very reflective of what's happening:
Collingwood has some good players that are doing some good things and putting in good effort, but ultimately across the board they're not as clean or crisp as the Bulldogs - hence 1 goal 5. Bulldogs, on the other hand, have their dangerous little...
Tough to say. With the missing players from Collingwood and a pretty strong team from the Bulldogs you'd expect them to win (and I've tipped as such), but it's round 1 so you never know.
I will say that the dogs managed to start hitting their stride in their last half of football. Didn't...
Tipped a Richmond margin of 36 points, on account of first game of the year and Tigers having mentality issues in the past.
Looks like Carlton's midfield is trying to spite my tipping.
While it's not the blockbuster I'd like the season to start with, it's one of the harder games to call in the round IMO, so at least that should make it interesting. Hopefully both teams go hard at it and make it an entertaining spectacle. Richmond on paper seems like they should win, but over...
It's not the easiest game we could've started with - an away game against a team with a lot of spirit regardless of what men they have out on the field - but I'm tipping us to win by a few goals. We've had a pretty solid team for a few years now, and while not having our first 2 choice ruckmen...
Had to rewatch the highlights after reading this - geez that last passage of play by Tex is awesome. With strength gets rid of his man, runs down the wing with a few bounces, sums up the moment and measures a perfect pass to basically sew up the win. Amazing stuff.
Good contests culminating in wins of a goal or less. If you barrack for either team, it's awesome to be on the winning side and painful to be on the losing side - but if you're a neutral, it's a great spectacle to see both sides try so hard to get over the line with a few minutes less and one...
IMO, with how competitive spots 5 through 8 should be this year (and in particular 7 and 8), a successful Dee's year won't necessarily have a finals appearance - 10+ wins, and in contention for the finals at various points in the season.
