I'm too optimistic about too many players to pick one, so I'm going say our biggest improver in 2017 will be our forward line. On paper, it looks pretty good:
F: McCarthy Hawkins Motlop
HF: Menzel Stanley Cockatoo
Motlop and Cockatoo mainly rotating through the midfield, Stanley spending time...
I guess the frustrating part for supporters is that it's an inconsistent rule anyway; it 100% depends on the player and their form. Hawkins only got moved into the ruck when his forward play was lacking. Selwood's never been asked to be anything but a first line inside midfielder. Harry...
I understand your frustration with playing players out of position; particularly with Smedts, his forward play (admittedly from 2012-13) seemed like exactly what we were lacking in 2014-15 (pressure forward that can mark on the lead), even this year. But don't you agree that Smedts, Murdoch and...
If that was the scenario though (not sure that it was, just my reading based on media reports), then Caddy's out. He doesn't have a single minded drive to help Geelong win premierships, his focus is on improving himself at the expense of the club. Not a dastardly thing by any stretch, but from...
My understanding of the situation was this:
Deledio wanted Geelong
Geelong said "ooh, um, not sure how we can do that. We'll look into it"
Geelong went to Richmond and said "what about Deledio"
Richmond said "we don't want to lose him, but it'll take a first rounder to get him"
Geelong said...
First things first: I'm as frustrated as anyone that Caddy's gone.
But one of the fundamental points of my post was that it matters little to the great organisation what their competitors do. A truly great organisation will happily move a star performer that doesn't fit with the company's...
Yes, but I think that's the point. A draft pick is nothing more than a number; sure it's got value, but once that draft pick turns into an actual person, the value may increase or decrease in certain peoples eyes, but it fundamentally changes from something of only nominal value to something of...
I've been thinking a bit about this (because I'm genuinely frustrated by the Caddy trade and need a distraction). A while ago, I read 'Good to Great', which is the book that Costa and Cook got the principles from that helped rebuild the club. It basically focuses on what makes a company go...
Trimmed for focus.
On the salary cap, you know that clubs are required to spend at least 95% of the total cap every year? I understand that it's then a matter of management, but it's also why some teams have kids on big contracts, which skews the marketplace. To maintain a strong list with 30...
Wanted to compare our last two trade periods with Hawthorns, here's the results (it's more info than I thought it would be):
Geelong outs (combined for 2015/2016 trade periods):
Shane Kersten, Nathan Vardy, Billie Smedts, Josh Caddy, Dean Gore, Jarrad Jansen, Josh Walker, Dawson Simpson (FA)...
Just to turn the attention away from Geelong for a second... anyone else find it amazing that for all the angst about Sam Mitchell being traded for pick 88, that happens to be Hawthorns first pick in this draft! They really cleaned the cupboard to get JOM and Mitchell in.
Don't fully disagree yet, but you're being a little dramatic:
Won't comment on the retirements, as I'm as disappointed as anyone about it, but that's been a yearly thing since, well Harley left in 09.
Smedts and Vardy were no where near it this year, Kersto wanted to leave, I'm not sure we were...
The AFLs trade wrap for Monday seems to confirm that any deal involving Caddy and Deledio is unlikely (not sure if I can believe Geelong actually considered a straight swap).
Better than that though is the new info about the JOM deal to Hawks breaking down. The slow motion train wreck of a...
Yep, you're right, maybe i should have gone harder. How's this:
- Hawks lose Hill, Hartung, Whitecross, their 2016 rd, 2017 rd1, the top 2 in their b&f, valuable leadership and the general trust and goodwill of their senior playing group, gain some junk picks and enough drama and complications...
Wanted to figure this out myself, so here goes:
So far:
- They got 23 for Hill
- Traded 23, 36 and 2017 Rd1 for 10 and 64
Talk is now of something like this:
- Hawks lose p10, Hartung and Whitecross, get JOM (and likely a late-ish pick)
- Brisbane lose p16 and Hanley, get Hartung, Whitecross...
The best thing about the Hawks trading is the same as the best thing about Geelong's: they know what they want and they go out and get it.
They needed a ruckman in 2013, they traded out their first rounder and Shane Savage. I would say overs for the player they got, but he was worth it to...
That fact that we were linked to Wells should tell you a bit; there's a lot of speculation around at this time of year. Deledio looks a chance to come because he fills a need for two years while young players develop/are drafted.
The suggested deals are just that, suggestions. If Motlop goes...
Yep, I like the idea of him and McCarthy patrolling our forward fifty, scaring defenders. Feel like they could both snag a few with a bit more development.
Not sure where I've heard/read this, but my understanding is that the team that has dealt with Menzel's knee since ACL #4 has gained some notoriety and respect around the world. Hopefully they do good things with Thurlow's recovery.
The AFL had an article this morning wrapping up each team's suspensions and fines from the MRP this year. We only had Hawkins' dodgy week off for the fist push on Phil Davis and Ruggles fine for Cyril's softness in the QF.
I actually thought this was a good sign, given the more regular acts of...
A few people bringing up our lack of talent in our youth, so I thought I'd do a quick review:
19-21:
Hayball (19), Gardner (19), Parsons (19), Cockatoo (20), Buzza (20), Gregson (20), Cunico (20), Kolo (21), Lang (21), Luxford (21)
22-23:
Thurlow (22), McCarthy (23), Bews (23)
Now, there are...
Too slight? Stanley's got 5kgs on Taylor and from memory has the highest bench press of any current player. Sure, Clark's got a couple of kgs on him, but it's definitely not muscle. I don't 100% disagree about his hands, but I also don't agree. He can clunk a contested mark, he just plays...
Agree about Taylor; he's not a forward, but is a good switch option in particular games. With the potential of Lonergan leaving, Taylor is needed down back. Stanley though... it felt like he was regularly only millimetres away from having a real impact in the forward line. Got good position...
Rumors rumors rumors... some of this stuff just doesn't make sense to me. So much over-valuing and so many perfect fits... This makes sense to me (most outs being out of the clubs hands):
- Enright, Bartel, Lonergan and Clarke retire. Vardy traded out, club fights to keep Kersten, loses. Rumors...
Ok, couldn't be bothered reading much of this thread after page 1 so sorry if this has already been said.
Our biggest strengths this year opened up our biggest weakness. Dangerfield being Dangerfield meant tons of inside 50s (he has the record now in case you missed it), but with a lot less...
So Bews in for Ruggles seems like a fairly good indication that Hendo's playing back. Like it or not, the MC see Ruggles as the better ball user, but Bews as the running man, which will be important tonight. Hendo, Taylor, Enright, Mackie moving the ball by foot seems like enough quality...
My feeling is that Jimmy thinks he could still play and that's the reason he'll retire. Strikes me more as the Ling/Harley type (retire on their own terms) rather than the Chapman/Johnson type.
Mackie on the other hand, I see as the type that will happily hang around next year and play out...
There'll be someone here that knows this, but just how easy was it to judge who controlled the game on Friday night? I don't know that there's ever been a more evenly matched game with such differences in game plan. They won the uncontested possession, which is their game, we won the contested...
