We had nobody useful to pass it to.
I don't see that Merrett, Martin, Perkins, Durham, Caldwell and Parish are a problem in terms of kicking inside 50. The first three are very good and the next 3 are solid. With the absence of Reid and Ridley our backline was blue collar but held up pretty...
They may all end up being competent, consistent, best 22 players but we are desperate for star power and none of them will get there.
The only two on our list that appear to have potential as genuine stars are Caddy and Tsatas (ignoring Merrett). Tsatas may not make it at all but he does have...
When we lost him he hadn't shown anything other than a good boot. We didn't want to lose him but weren't prepared to invest too much in him because he hadn't as yet shown enough to warrant a long contract. We got it wrong and Hawks got it right but it was a coin toss at the time. I find it...
To think we were so excited by Alwyn Snr getting to 100 games.
Considering we have the worst small forwards of any team in the last 25 years he must have been terrible.
I don't get the point of a salary cap. Stars just get paid with contrived sponsorship deals so it's a waste of time. Just one more act for equalisation that gets rorted leaving the situation as "unfair" as it was in the beginning.
And then there's the draft which is so compromised we may as...
Why does that mean they can't say the system is unfair? How would them accepting any assistance render their point that they get less assistance overall inaccurate? It's a non-sequitur.
The objective of the AFL has been to equalise. Maybe that's a good objective maybe it isn't but you either...
Is there any correlation between what recruiters thought a draft year would turn out as vs how they actually turned out?
How you play is dependent on how effective your opponent is as well as how good your teammates are (and good teammates can both help or hinder). I think recruitment is doing...
Such a close season and heat of the moment sure but the Lions look light years ahead of us and most other clubs.
They'll get another superstar in the younger Ashcroft plus they'll get Coleman back.
I'm genuinely struggling to think of someone in our team other than Zerrett who would play in...
He had one of the flattest trajectory kicks - 50 metre worm burners all lace out to the opposition.
He was actually superb at jumping on players' heads. Invariably his teammates. Then he would drop the mark thus leaving 3 opposition forwards unmarked so they could waltz into goal.
The best -...
Assuming we lose Shiel, him in the guts with Caldwell, Parish and Durham - between the four of them that should be a sound mix of extremely clean hands, reasonable defensive pressure, good speed and ok kicking.
Zerrett and Martin switching between half back and wing.
Still desperately need...
I like him too but he's not going to be on our list next year given how much depth we have in his position (unless he starts playing forward in VFL and dominating). Other clubs may want him but we won't get anything more than a token pick for him.
I'd swap Perkins, Cox and Z Reid for Harley. Eagles wouldn't do it though.
It's not a slight on our three I just can't see Harley not winning several premierships wherever he plays. We could be talking about a 30 possession, 3 goal a game, 3 goal assist player here.
That trade value would be...
Probably important to realise we have a very good injury list - especially for mids.
He may not be first choice for a couple of years but he should play most weeks. Especially if he shows versatility.
Along with Hayes and Bryan I could see Setterfield continuing his journeyman status. He's a good B- midfielder in a team that has half a dozen B+ midfielders. Nothing against keeping him but he would rightly feel that game time will elude him here.
That's right Casey. If Hayes is perfectly content to be biding his time waiting for two or more injuries then good luck to him and we can't force him out of his contract. But there's a high likelihood that he would move to play AFL so the question then becomes trying to get something decent for...
I'd be looking at trading Hayes. He, Laverde and Reid are all good enough to be best 22 in a decent team but all miss out on our best 22. McKay and Ridley are both young so it's not like Hayes is just going to hang around and patiently wait.
Under this scenario, it might be worth keeping...
