Curtin played 7 games, not 5. Unless you're excluding sub games in which that would impact the numbers for the other guys as well. For talls he's slightly below average for the pool, but certainly not 5-15 games. In terms of the whole draft pool I just think it's completely ridiculous to compare...
We tried him in a variety of positions, including key defender which was the role he played the most as a junior and that he was drafted to play. He was running through the midfield in the SANFL within the first two months of the season, and also spent some time there at AFL level. Also up...
Who are we comparing him to? Harley Reid? Nick Watson? There's no way he's 5-15 games behind for a tall, especially given a pre-season injury and uncertainty about his best role. If you're comparing him to a 185cm midfielder I guess, but it's not a fair comparison at all. Very rare that you know...
Which high draft picks have we used this 'see you in two years' approach with? I guess if you ignore fitness issues you could say Pedlar? We certainly haven't with Max, Rachele, Thilthorpe, Jones, McAsey etc.
Not sure if you're kidding but GWS offered Peatling four years. Hard to see how F2 and change is a bad price, leaving aside whether the Crows actually want to pay it or not.
To be fair we had McHenry for all those games, so it's not like we didn't have anyone in that role. It was pretty much one of the other this year (they did play 4 games together but one of them was always the sub). We just picked Murphy when they were both available as he's clearly better.
Historically it's unusual, in recent years not so much. The competition is getting more even on the whole and the relative strength of different teams in the middle of the pack is less predictable over a long season than it used to be.
Nah don't see it at all. He's clearly happy, he's not jumping up and down like they won the flag but you have to be so far down the rabbit hole of convincing yourself Nicks has some sort of personal vendetta against one of his players to see him as unhappy in that moment.
The players are...
What on earth are you talking about? He looked happy for the kid as you obviously would be.
When Nicks put Curtin forward in the last quarter, is the theory here that he was hoping he wouldn't kick any goals?
A win with no votes to Walker, Dawson or Rankine is a serious rarity. Second time that's happened since the start of 2022.
The other instance was the home win against Gold Coast late last year.
Also I think the first votes of Berry's career.
It wasn't a necessity. Keays had attended 1 CBA for the whole season up to 3/4 time this week, and he attended 6 in the last quarter against Essendon. Players who could have taken those CBAs instead include Laird, Taylor, Soligo, Dowling, Michalanney or Rachele. They've all been in the middle...
Realistically our draft pick before any pick swaps or compensation will be between 4 and 6, with a very high chance of being exactly 5.
We are currently 14th. Even winning 4 of the last 5 we finish on 46 points and the currently 13th place team already has 36 with 5 games to play. Very hard to...
On the other hand, we also won while having a far less experienced side with less to play for, away from home against a finals-bound side we haven't beaten in 7 years. Surely Nicks deserves some credit for the result.
In terms of actual good coaching, I liked the move to put Keays into the...
What contest are you talking about? Rachele was second to the ball. Ideally there you execute a legal tackle after Ridley collects it. If you're not executing a legal tackle, it's much better to pull out than to bump given that bumping is almost a guaranteed lengthy suspension.
There are...
What's damning about it? I'd rather he did that than complete the bump and get suspended for a month.
Mainly interested in winning games, as opposed to players demonstrating how tough they are.
Geelong losing to the Bulldogs is a pretty bad result for whatever tiny finals chances Adelaide had. We need a bit of separation so that a team with 12.5 wins can sneak into 8th. One game separating 2nd from 11th makes that pretty hard, would need a few teams to mess up badly.
Realistically I think we finish on 10.5 wins in 14th. Not a bad result in terms of finishing the year strongly without impacting draft hand.
Theoretically there is a path to 8th place with 12.5 wins. From looking at sims it feels like with 12.5 wins we'd make it around half of the time, as...
Don't think Smith is going anywhere especially with a couple of defensive injuries. Assuming Keays will be fine also. The only unforced change I can see would be Walker for Himmelberg though that one is tricky as Thilthorpe not having to ruck is a bonus. Main question is whether all four talls...
Has done an amazing job re-inventing himself as a forward since he lost the midfield role last season. Has kicked 40 goals since the bye last year. By comparison Fogarty who has been pretty good as a key forward has 46 in that time.
Assume he will get a solid block of games based on that performance, was very good. Similar to Dowling and Taylor I think the main question is how he fits into the best team when we have a full list to select from. Good problems.
He wasn't playing on Hipwood in the leadup to that goal. Keane was, Curtin simply gave away the free kick.
It's possible he spent moments on key forwards in his two games due to the way defence works in the modern game but he was never marking them for extended periods. Curtin was picked as the...
I think one more year for Walker works well. Thilthorpe is still developing, we're almost certain to draft another forward option this year who will benefit from Walker being around the club, and Walker is still a dangerous player who can help the club win games next year.
By the end of next...
I can't see too many changes beyond Thilthorpe definitely starting the game, with Himmelberg the likely out.
Suspect it's more likely that Jones comes in than Curtin, mainly because I'm not sure what role Curtin is playing. Not opposed to him playing Smith's role but I think it's more likely...
This is true and you're right that West Coast is a good example. It's also about performance relative to expectations. West Coast have resilient fans but still lost quite a lot in terms of attendance numbers in the depths of last year, who have come back in response to somewhat improved...
Not sure what you're responding to really. What I'm saying is that attendance dropping off is because we can't make finals. That's it - it happens to most clubs most years when finals isn't on the table. Trying to pin it to some elaborate message to the board or something is just wishful...
Nowhere. I'm asking what 'the message' is. The post I was responding to took it for granted that it was obvious, and 'play the kids results be damned' is a popular view on here. But if that was the message being conveyed by fans not turning up, presumably we'd have seen it earlier in the year...
I do realise that. I'm saying that I don't think you can infer anything in particular from crowds not showing up except that people lose interest in the team when they are a) losing and b) have no chance of making finals.
