The B&F is all about playing your role. Bond played his role in 7 games
Whilst I don't have him in our best side, he needs to be part of the squad rotations, particularly when we need to lockdown on a dangerous opposition small forward.

Congraulations to Jordan and Ben on the B& F result. Keays has his limitations but you can't fault the guy's endeavour. Always gives 100% and he's made big improvements to his disposal. that'll never be his 1 wood though.

Hope I'm posting this in the correct thread. It seems to have morphed into the ROB ruck thread
As they say ... All threads lead to ROBme

Wild how despite his success most of our fans are still happy with a 'see you in two years' approach to our high draft picks.
Which high draft picks have we used this 'see you in two years' approach with? I guess if you ignore fitness issues you could say Pedlar? We certainly haven't with Max, Rachele, Thilthorpe, Jones, McAsey etc.

We took our talented first round pick and tried to make him a key defender in the SANFL.

Wait you're talking about Curtin? He hasn't even been on the list for two years yet.

And what is he already, 5-15 games behind comparable talents from the draft?

Probably more if you consider the actual game time given in those games.

Who are we comparing him to? Harley Reid? Nick Watson? There's no way he's 5-15 games behind for a tall, especially given a pre-season injury and uncertainty about his best role. If you're comparing him to a 185cm midfielder I guess, but it's not a fair comparison at all. Very rare that you know too much about a tall player in their first season beyond glimpses of talent.

Here are the first seasons from top 10 draft picks over 195cm from the last 4 years post-COVID, noting that at least a couple of these guys are likely to be generational superstars.
  • Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Pick 1) - 5 games, debuted in round 17
  • Riley Thilthorpe (Pick 2) - 14 games, played most of the year after a round 6 debut
  • Logan McDonald (pick 4) - 7 games, played early but nothing after round 13
  • Nikolas Cox (Pick 8) - 22 games, the only tall to play 20+ games in the last 5 years, also played a final
  • Zach Reid (Pick 10) - 1 game
  • Sam Darcy (Pick 2) - 4 games, debuted in round 21 and played a final, obviously an elite player
  • Mac Andrew (Pick 5) - 4 games, debuted in round 20
  • Jye Amiss (Pick 8) - 3 games, played in round 8 and then 2 finals, kicked 4 goals
  • Josh Gibcus (Pick 9) - 18 games, played pretty much the full season though did fade towards the end
  • Aaron Cadman (Pick 1) - 12 games, debuted in round 5 and played most of the season, was subbed off in a third of his games and missed the end of the season and finals. Kicked 6 goals.
  • Jed Walter (Pick 3) - 14 games for 11 goals. Didn't dominate but played a fair number of games. Subbed off 3 times.
  • Dan Curtin (Pick 8) - 7 games, played in a few different positions, struggled in defence but showed a bit in other roles
  • Ethan Read (Pick 9) - 4 games, fairly quiet season and similar to Curtin in that he was subbed off in half his games
Average number of games is 8.8, median is 7. Only 2 players played over 15 games which is the standard if you're talking a top 10 pick under 190cm (4 out of 5 did it this year, 5 out of 7 last year). In this group most were still making their way into the first team at the end of the year. Curtin is pretty much where you'd expect a 197cm player to be in year 1.

I’d say his suggestion is mucking about with his development playing him in wrong positions.
Like we tried with fog.
We tried him in a variety of positions, including key defender which was the role he played the most as a junior and that he was drafted to play. He was running through the midfield in the SANFL within the first two months of the season, and also spent some time there at AFL level. Also up forward etc. Ridiculous to describe this approach as 'see you in two years'.

Fogarty's draft profiles also express some uncertainty about his best position by the way, particularly whether his best position would be forward or midfield.

Because I feel like we didn’t know where to use him, surely when you draft someone you should have a plan?
The last thing a new draftee needs is to be thrown around.

Fog - We tried him down back from memory as well.

Are you talking about Curtin, or when we did it to McAsey, Fogarty, and Doedee?

Deliberately constructing a pool where he's competing with key position players despite no one with sense thinking he projects as one could never give a false impression. And even then, he's only at half of the average number of games (noting that no one in their right mind could count the Brisbane game as a 'game').

Do you really think you were making the point that you wanted to?

Players drafted this year around his draft station:

1. Harley Reid- 20 games. Ok, he's a freak though. No one else played much, right?

Wrong.

2. McKircher - 16 games.
3. Walter - 14 games.
4. Duursma - 13 games.
5. Nick Watson- 18 games.
6. Ryley Sanders- 14 games.
7. Caleb Windsor- 19 games.
8. Daniel Curtin - 5 games (4 really)
9 Ethan Reid - 4 games (as a ruckman)
10. Nate Caddy - 10 games.
13. Tholstrup - 10 games.
14. Jake Rogers - 9 games.

We didn't play him anywhere near the league practice. Despite being in a team eliminated from finals basically in week two.

Just because you claim he was 'drafted to play' key defender doesn't make it correct.

Most of his comparable draftees have played twice his games over again in year one. And if we manage to repeat this in year two, they'll be most of the way to 50 games and he'll still be an effective rookie.

Curtin played 7 games, not 5. Unless you're excluding sub games in which that would impact the numbers for the other guys as well. For talls he's slightly below average for the pool, but certainly not 5-15 games. In terms of the whole draft pool I just think it's completely ridiculous to compare him to guys like Watson and Sanders and think he's behind because he didn't play as many games as them. He missed some game time due to uncertainty about where he should play for sure, but taking a while to find your feet for a guy with his draft profile is totally normal. If your 197cm high but not #1 pick plays 10 games in the first year they're doing fine. If you think his height is irrelevant that's definitely an opinion I suppose but I think you're wrong and he'll end up playing a lot more as he develops physically, similar to the other guys on the tall picks list.

Even if you are dead set on this view that he's a born midfielder and it was always ridiculous to play him as a defender despite his junior footy in that role, at least compare him to other tall midfielders like Cripps (3 games) and Bont (16 games) rather than the whole pool of mostly small and mid-sized midfielders.
