Thats crap. Sure some players wouldn't care if their number was 99, but i think you'll find many players would be superstitious about numbers in one way or another. Not that it would affect their performances, but they would definitely have their preferences. And nothing wrong with that IMO.

I'd say basketball would be pretty close. In terms of participation. Most people have played competitive basketball at some stage in their lives. Obviously it's not as big at the top level, but socially it would be right up there.
