Jon Anderson's draft countdown - Carlton

Not a bad summation from JA.

As J said in the OP, one of few who recognise that we have some talent down back and don't necessarily need to fill a key defensive hole.

Well he never really said we would be using them, they are just available for us to use if we want.
Then why not list 91 as well? :thumbsu:

Well written article that. As J said, one of the first journo's to recognise that we were sverely limited with a number of our talls going down last year in Waite, Jamison & Austin. Our list is pretty strong, and we should just take the best available player at #12 next week, no matter what position he plays.
Man this one eyed view on the draft shits me to tears. So if the best available player in this draft happens to be a ruckman do we take him even though we have a large stock of yound talented ruckman, knowing that when they all peak we will only be able to play 2 of them while the others go to waste in the VFL?
It has some merit in the way that if you need a key position player but the best KPP doesn't deserve to be taken until pick 50 when we have pick 12 then certainly your not going to pick him. However if you need to correct team balance and take a KPP with pick 12, but the best KKP isn't warranted to be taken till maybe pick 15 then you take the KPP.
Ask Geelong if they are happy taking Talyor with a first round pick a couple of years ago. I'd be very sure not too many other clubs would have selected him if they had pick 17. Maybe there would have been a midfielder who was the best availble player at that time. But you tell me, would Geelong have won the flag this year if they had selected another midfilder rather than a KP backman?

Because we actually cant use that pick as we don't have enough spots on our list.
I think you need to re-read the conversation above, which originally asked why would he put pick 75 on there...........:thumbsu:

I look forward to Carlton potentially not selecting a KPP and the Carlton forum going nuts.

Most teams would struggle to cover a Waite or Jamison being injured. The first selection in the draft should be best avalaible. Watching Geelong use midfielders like Enright and Corey in defence last year showed that quality players can fill specific roles in a team.

The modern game is moving to high possession, skilled running defenders so once again midfielders are of high importance.

We really need talls especially after deleting Bannister,Hartlett,Edwards and Cloke.

We should be taking guys like Talia if available if Butcher gone and definitely Thorp if his injuries are not ongoing.Aaron Black is another option also. I would take all if they were available at each pick.

We delisted 4 talls and only placed Sam Jacobs. We have plenty of midfield types and small or medium types to replace guys like Scotland and others when they finished.

We have quick players like Yarran and Gartlett in the forward line who could play in the guts also.
Hmm, I thought we were spoiled for choice with Henderson, Hampson, Warnock and Jacobs, along with Kreuzer, Waite, O'hAilpin, etc... :footy:
