In a miserably start to the season, I see some light in the darkness;
Firstly, likely forwards Mayes, Brown, Paine, will worry the Tigers.
Secondly, team selection (at long last) seems to be trying to achieve pace and running ability! Crucially and correctly in our engine room (on-ballers)...
Lester is out why?
Forget about the Forwards. (Paine is a good in).
Don't fret over the Backs. (they ain't that bad and Harwood is a good in).
Its the midfield people.
We have a pace-challenged midfield!
Redden, Rockliff, Rich and Moloney for all their on-field gifts,
dragging off their...
Little-bit on the fence in relation to Bewick, but browny points for his attitude, pace
& "almost" mark of the year, gotta keep for Metracon.
Very early Ins:
(gut feeling is Leppa will not make many changes)
Harwood
Paine
rookie Burke (loved his preseason) may become available if Weardon...
;)I like this set of propositions;
In particular the tactic to use Rich down-back as free-running loose man. It has real merit.
He is the type of player who doesn't handle the close tag, and if Leppa were to give him the loose-man reins,
his kicking ability and his on-field nouse, would able us...
Good post.
Plenty to discuss.
If I was to be critical, a little bit of each-way and a little bit fence-sitty.
Nearly everybody gets a mention as "list important" even Polkinghorne is mentioned as chance for a regular senior spot.
Joking, yes.
Was not too disappointed as the "tragedy" unfolded right there on my TV.
But what shocked me right out of my brain was the very average performance of one Jordan Lisle.
CHF looks right out of his range.
On the bright side, we feel our bla bla bla, concerning, young guns Aish and Robertson was...
Very good read and I do find myself generally thinking yep, yep, maybe.
Aish will be in there from the start. Certain starter, (genetically engineered), 2 senior grand finals in a premier league speaks for itself.
I prefer Beams because he has better speed and skill. This guy reminds me a lot...
Your well make and accurate point . .. "We don't have a lot of depth in the small/medium defender role." . . . I see as the very reason to have a capable take-them-on, half-back attacking role which would be well suited to a classy player like Pearce.
I see Pearce as a way to fix a crack in our...
If Leppa wants, we do have one of the best small/medium defenders in the league, real possible all-australian.
Has enough quality/talent to hold down a running defenders role in any of the top teams:
One P.Hanley.
Can captain Jed, now he has secure the top post, impress with a stint in the middle, and lead from the front?
I hope he plays mostly midfielder rather than defender.
He has the hands, nouse and ability to be creative, a la mode of old team-mate legend, Simon Black. Strong over the ball, could...
I do hope we include 3 forward talls; can't happen against all sides, but we are (personnel wise) quite capable of a 3-tall-setup.
To make this a functioning, dangerous forward line, we absolutely need key MOBiLE, speedy smalls.
A live-wire band of creative goal-sneeks would be ideal, and in...
I hoping all it will take is a couple of good pre-season games and Jackson P.
could make it to the starting 22 and definitely has cred to graduate to CHF.
Plenty of other candidates who could step up but:
Jordan Lisle (no heart)
Stefan Martin (no footy brains)
and Michael Close (close but hes...
KPP Paine can play: hits the ball hard, aggressive & splits packs, when and on song is a one-grabber.
194cm (same height as Browny, but can get off the ground and is far more agile).
Big weakness is his tiny tank: but if one person can fix that (full preseason, etc. etc)
then we have that man...
Best 22 could surprise big footy fans. Fitness given, 22 should include:
Trent west
(senior footballer in one of the afl's greatest sides, if he wants it, should make our 22)
Jackson Paine
Could just establish himself if given the key role/responsibility at CHF.
Will have opportunities...
Mummies boys have done us a favour.
For the record; from a once clinically depressed lion supporter:
Congratulations Lions on some fantastic recruiting, (love-it, best ever).
We had need for speed, quality guys around the ball, runners, got-it, great!
Hoping Leppa fires up and embraces the...
Its no wonder Longer was pissed with out previous "brains trust" who found themselves unable to find a second ruck spot for him during a pretty ordinary Lions season.
He is a potentially serious afl footballer and his yo-yo treatment; like a few other young guys was pretty ordinary.
Luckily...
Onya angus, decision brutal but correct!
Can't fault Vossy's strong leadership abilities, and clearly he had the support & respect (on and off field) from most of the lions footballers he coached over the years.
A good mentor/communicator to our young squad and on occasions definitely got the...
"Structural work" is arguably one of those more indefinite something a good team needs,
but probably takes care of itself if the right players are in the right positions.
And re: Banfield, I was a little excited by his efforts NAB cup,
his hands, skills and decision making were "yeah, thats...
2013, spotlight is on Todd.
Seems, end of last season he may have even have been trade bait.
Survived to remain on list, but this is a make or break year for him.
If he ends up in the reserves can't see a bright future for him at the lions.
Last season really was a bit cringe worthy and no way...
Long term:
all of the above.
Short term:
win clearance, breakaway with pace, use skill & deliver to dominant forward line abound with goal kicking options.
or
win clearance, release to outside running options, they use skill & deliver to dominant forward line abound with goal kicking...
In recent poor seasons our backline has easily been our strength!
(except early 2010 when forwards fev & brown were dominant until injured)
but last season the defence was average and weakened by the great Merritt experiment,
henceforth I thought our good games were set going by our improving...
Shane Nelson
Pumped for him last draft but failed to make it on any list!
Is he trouble? Not a team player? Drugs or just plain unlucky?
Tests well, accumulator, works tirelessly, mid who can run/carry and use the ball, on the surface looks like a good addition to any list (You would think at...
On Mayes, my sentiments exactly, will be our best recruit since Redden.
But really disappointed in Polec, doesn't not seem to have his heart in it.
I don't believe he's soft at all, its more commitment, hopefully he will do a Ryan O'keefe
and decide the Lions are the team he wants to be a part of.
