For me, Katie Holmes in Batman Begins is one of those cases of a sore thumb sticking out, her performance is blatantly subpar and hard to watch compared to the surrounding film which could be argued as the best in its genre.
Pulp Fiction & The Shawshank Redemption are both in my personal top 5 of that year (along with Three Colours: Red & White and Satantango)
Four Weddings would be my third pick of those nominees, a classic 90s mainstream romcom that stands up
He was my favourite Eagle of the past couple years, glad the deal got done for him the way he wanted. From late 2016 on he was a super reliable presence for us. Will miss seeing him in our navy kit especially, and his calm humble bearing on field. Hope he can win another flag with you guys! A...
that isn’t unusual for year 12 though. NSW hsc was term 4 to term 3, so farewell stuff in grand final week. And if you got that far in coursework without dropping out and merely sat exams you can’t exactly pass or fail, just atar ranked. I don’t remember what it was called either, but was an...
I think I’ve reached that conscious point where I’ve stopped caring at all about the notion of a republic.
The context now also feels very different to 1999 (for various reasons), it doesn’t seem very achievable nor desirable for the foreseeable.
yeah I don’t think I’ve watched a second of afl content since a fortnight back with the last 360/OTC and the new Eagles coach
Barrass has been my favourite Eagle of the past couple seasons, so I’m interested enough to keep abreast, but not enough to actively tune in to dead air conjecture. The...
finally caught up with these two in the past couple days and thought they were both tremendous:
Three Thousand Years of Longing
Late Night With the Devil
Was watching that match in NSW at the time with my blood parents. Had seldom seen my dad so excited to that point, was definitely the furthest they’d gotten in decades supporting them. Mum was able to feel a bit sorry for Sheedy n co losing that brutally. They were so poor and irrelevant that I...
even though he only played 15 (suspension/concussion/hammy) Rankine looked ominous at times this year, you’d expect to see him as a perennial fixture in the preseason prediction from now on
Just some trivia:
Apparently South Melbourne & Fitzroy first battled at the SCG in an exho in 1905
Fitzroy played in the first VFL match at the SCG in early 1903. Apparently that was also the first official VFL match to trial worn player numbers on the back of guernseys (a decade later 1912...
I’m more a one and done drinker. I’m very light and a drink gives me a sufficient buzz for 2 hours. Feels pointless to go beyond that unless it’s a rare occasion. Prefer a day drink too, as the sun goes down, not really a night drinker. Sure, I remember as a youth you wanted that real buzz and...
Looking at those scheduled at Astor, definitely High and Low which plays well with a modern crowd on the big screen. Looks like a Monday night though.
Rashomon is my fave by the way.

Presumed Innocent was decent (as someone who doesn’t rate the Pakula film and found this a significant improvement). Def ATV+ rec.
The Perfect Couple on NF was fine, maybe takes an ep or so to get on board with it but found it amusing and preferred it to a lot of that recent 2022 wave...
I tend to associate boiled eggs with early childhood and scrambled with childhood. Good dishes for kids. Along with maggi/2min noodles they are some of the earliest basic dishes you regularly cook up yourself under minimal supervision.
most Presidents traditionally didn’t tend to live too long post office. Hoover (three decades) & Truman (two decades) were unusual at the time. Now it’s been a while since a recent President died. Post-LBJ they’ve tended to stick around. Reagan maybe the briefest and that was still an entire...
I like Lyon but don’t really rate his in-game analysis. He is prone to recline back in his armchair and start waffling the established narratives, and thereby miss subtle shifts in game momentum and strategy and player development. A post post show like OTC suits him because he has had time to...
Reminds me of Faye Dunaway in Barfly, her alco price for a fella offering drinks was ‘a fifth of bourbon’, had to look that one up (as in a fifth of a gallon; standard 750ml wine bottle). Apparently a US thing for when quart bottles of spirits weren’t filled all the way.
If you were in the...
I remember renting it during the 2005 winter school holidays and the daily routine with my siblings was we’d watch PF, have a kick at the oval with my new (league Raiders) footy and watch the Tour de France stage.
yeah the league version is putrid. Whenever you switch over to that briefly you feel blessed with Gerard & Robbo. The Tallis arguments with Rothfield have an overbearing atmosphere.
I can’t see Robbo on Midweek Tackle as is, he isn’t sharp enough anymore to slot into that show’s rapid pacing.
I like that character blend of Lyon, Browny and Bucks on OTC, they share a good vibe and would be wary of tinkering with that.
The trick is not blurring the shows together too much...
I was thinking the same thing. Gerard referring to 1500 shared shows or hours (ouch!) and having little in common and then Garry just talking up Gerard. Gave me the sense that Robbo got the tap on the shoulder delist.
Probably good timing as Robbo had been in solid form of late. Not too slurry...
