Hi folks
It's been a while since I left Melbourne and Collingwood Archives and relocated back to Canberra, so haven't really contributed for a few years whilst distracted trying to recover from covid generated financial stress.
A project I started in Melbourne was creating a database of all...
Anyone recognize this old Guernsey design?
Received in a memorabilia donation (amongst other State jumpers) from legendary VFL administrator's family. Woollen jumper with Jason's Knitting Mill tag, white with green A on front and green numbers.
Maybe an Amateurs rep Guernsey?
Ok, but just to clarify, Steve and Col are unlikely to look at them. Agreement was we would not look at newspaper A v Newspaper B type discrepancies in foreseeable future.
We have just saved all our research for future, if some other evidence comes to the fore.
Luckily pre 1911, goals were less frequent :)
Even in a news report, reporter drops his pencil in the media box, goal is scored, "Macca who kicked that?" Answer goes in the paper next day, might be right, might be wrong. Even when there were 4 sources saying one thing, we found several...
Several historians met with Col Hutchisson and Steve Rodgers at AFL HQ over the off season to discuss game and goal stats and possible changes. There was a general methodology agreement after discussion about the respective accuracy or otherwise of some printed sources, with different...
Anyone got specific software they use for facial recognition? I previously used Picasa but that has gone by the wayside. Mixed results with google and facebook.
Lawrence William and Eugene Francis (Frank) were brothers. Frank used Lawrence's name when in trouble with military and police. Frank had other aliases and was involved in a fair bit of "mischief". An interesting character.
Some clarification and correction for a past Collingwood player, previously listed on our Forever webpage as "Johnny Dunn" who played 3 games in June 1903 and we had him coming from Northcote. https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/players/johnny-dunn/
There was no entry for him in the official...
I regularly go back and watch the help videos in Trove. I always pick up a new way to search or a feature I haven't used well previously.
I use Tags a lot but a caution if you are doing public tags, another similar tag can confuse your findings. Eg I was researching Boyd from Collingwood but...
1. I am waiting on feedback on the draft minutes but everyone is in lockdown so not holding my breath. I am sure they will allow me to share the outcomes, as the work being done on this Forum was recognized and valued by the meeting participants.
One of the important missing links however was...
FYI -
A meeting was recently held with AFL History & Stats Department, Russell Holmesby and Collingwood Archives regarding some recent sample review work Collingwood had done which highlighted potential differences and discrepancies in matches played and goals allocated to individual players in...
Congratulations Rhett, a sound appointment. We look forward to seeing you at Australian Football Heritage Group meetings whenever they can be held. And also congrats to Bill, a stalwart and great contributor.
We often receive miscellaneous photos of grounds, venues, teams, groups or individuals which we are asked to assist in identifying. I thought it would be good to have a separate thread for this type of query (unless it exists elsewhere?).
I will kick it off with this team photo which the owner...
35Daicos alerted me to my misinterpretation haha thks.
KC Bartlett Richmond 4ths to Richmond approved 20.4.63 (ex Try Boys U15s) is the only permit there.
Yes, there is a page for each season for each club, showing all players that season, where they came from, previous season,rd by rd matches played and goals, sometimes weekly votes, end of season votes/awards and notes of transfers. I attach a Collingwood page for 1934 as sample. I had to copy...
Hey Rhett
I looked at Permit Committee Minute Book for 61-66 and couldn't see specific mention of Maurie Fleming to Richmond. Permits Transcription Index 1951-82 also doesn't show him as a Permit.
I only quickly looked at Wikipaedia, The Clubs, The Australian Game Of Football since 1858 as references and 2 of them indicated Same Olds (and Dons) was still in use up until Bombers was adopted in WW2? But regardless, I can't see any plausible link to Same Olds anyway :no18:. We are...
I work with Michael Roberts at Collingwood Archives and have also been doing some work at AFL office last year, first day back tomorrow. I am looking at publishing Permits as a searchable database somehow this year.
Have focused on Collingwood records previously but hoping to digitise all into a database/website this year. Quality varies. Permit Register book from 1897-1930 is good. Then it goes to Minute Books from Umpire and Permit Committee which list the permits in the minutes, but after a few years it...
