GWS is the AFL's biggest problem - not North, GC, or Tassie

Tthere’s a limit to how accurate those surveys are as they only ask which team you support and therefore the Swan consistently have more supporters than Collingwood which is ridiculous. However, GWS’ crowds aren’t massively different to what North would draw if they also had to play interstate...

GWS is the AFL's biggest problem - not North, GC, or Tassie

Is there another part of Sydney it would’ve worked better in? My understanding of the reason for choosing the West was that it is almost half of a 5m person city and hence if you got even a small percentage interested, it could bring in a lot of new eyes.

GWS is the AFL's biggest problem - not North, GC, or Tassie

GWS are such a likeable team, from how they play to the song to their captain’s amazing skills and leadership. I would’ve been barracking for them next week if they’d gotten over us. Toby was so respectful post game despite being devastated and didn’t make any excuses. It was good to see a...

GWS is the AFL's biggest problem - not North, GC, or Tassie

I'll admit I thought for a long time that the GWS expansion was a mistake but I think we are very, very slowly seeing them build the market there. Western Sydney is extremely unlikely to ever be footy territory, but it is such a massive population centre that you need to have a presence there...

AFL announces 4.5billion, 7 year media deal (2025-2031 inclusive)

Yeah I did too. It was such a massive improvement on what came before it. Channel 9 was the one who made Friday Night Footy into the big event that it became today.

Tasmania Tasmania Devils, welcome to the AFL. Mens team to enter 2028. Womens team TBA. Labor declares support for Stadium 6/5

Was this just in terms of the ability to move the stands into a rectangular formation which they never use?

Tasmania Tasmania Devils, welcome to the AFL. Mens team to enter 2028. Womens team TBA. Labor declares support for Stadium 6/5

Does anyone know what the crowd was yesterday? The AFL is playing funny buggers again like they do whenever GWS or Tasmania draws a tiny crowd and putting TBC as the crowd number. Funny how that never happens when they draw an unexpectedly large crowd.

Moved Thread If Tasmania gets the 19th license, what state or territory would you like to see team 20 based in?

The nightmare situation in Alice Springs is probably helping the case for a NT team. If it’s going to be based around federal funding as a community initiative it has potential. This and the Tassie team should be the AFL giving back to heartlands that have provided them with lots of talent...

I think the reasoning behind targeting outer Western Suburbs is that they have heaps of migrants whose kids are probably easier to win over to a new sport than children of a rusted on rugby league family.

Wouldn’t this still be beneficial as those supporters of other clubs would be more likely to pay for a membership since they could watch their team 11 weeks a year?

I doubt the other 3 codes would want to play on an AFL sized oval. Better chance of collaborating with cricket so they can leech off footy like they do everywhere else. At least it might get a few extra dollars.

Doesn’t it hold less than 20k and heaps of that is unseated ?

AFL is pre you would need a new stadium also I’m assuming. Is there going to be federal funding for a 30k stadium?

Tasmania Congratulations on Tassie License. Mens team to enter 2028. Womens team TBA. Other details TBA 3/5

Cricket is a parasite at every footy ground they play on, only having good stadiums cos of money generated from football but acting like they’re the more important tenants. The MCG gets half filled like 4 days a year from cricket (if England or India come). Richmond and Collingwood should put...

    Expansion 3rd South Australian Club

Sounds exciting. It seems WAFL clubs don’t seem to have equivalents to Melbourne’s big 4 or Port/Norwood. It would be good to have more of a national league with some authentic WA and SA teams in there rather than those franchises the Eagles and Crows. If they could find a way to put in a Darwin...

    Expansion 3rd South Australian Club

I notice on your profile it says you support Port in the AFL but Sturt in the SANFL. I was under the impression almost all of Port's fans were Magpies people and that almost everyone else jumped on the Crows. What do you think would be the percentage of SA people who don't support either of the...

    Expansion 3rd South Australian Club

What part of Adelaide is Norwood based in? Is it a region not touched as much by the Crows and Port? Would they potentially be able to draw similar crowds to what Port do?

Cos one half of the docklands precinct was bought by overseas Chinese and kept empty as an investment property and the other half was bought up by the Melbourne underworld as a place they can live with security cameras to avoid getting shot.

They have a league that runs with no dramas up there. Good quality footy too. The only reason they have it in our summer is because cricket can't work in the wet season so footy moved to accommodate cricket.

What I mean is that you can charge a decent amount of money for a Melbourne based membership that’s going to give them access to 6 or 7 games a year in comparison to the Sydney one in which they will play once or twice (or maybe not at all) in a year.

How many of those are in Melbourne? Realistically that’s the only one you could make any decent sort of money off memberships as a 6 game pass. Interestingly if you live in Melbourne, you’d be able to see them more frequently than in Launceston

I suspect they’d bea lot of people’s second team (probably my second also until Darwin get their own). It satisfies the desire to not have any of the other Vic teams win (don’t mind if the Dogs or North win) but without having to hear from WA or SAustralians going on about overcoming the...

While that’s the ideal, it does make it somewhat harder to do this considering Tasmania is not a particularly wealthy region
