Good opportunity to get Carey back as part time forward coach to teach Daw

I imagine Duck would say "all he has to do is call me" and he'd help Maj, presuming nobody else within the club has an issue with that. Good call scoob. :thumbsu:

If its good enough for Hawkins and Cloke and Hogan yet we wont even call the GOAT to come down and spend ****in half an hour with our forwards.
Clubs f***ing chip on its shoulder is perplexing

Got a lot of learning to do if he wants to perfect his craft. He knows how to mark/lead/kick....but its bloody hard to teach people how to utilise their body in a contest. Most of that stuff is natural.

Leading patterns is the key, that is where goals come from him. If he can find space and run at the ball, bingo. Even if you put someone in front of him, he has the leap to get over them. Work on the body next year :)

Not sure if having Carey down at our club suits our community narrative. Bit hard to say you're for positive social change then hire a woman beater.

He knows how and when to lead, the problem is, the ball has to be delivered right to his chest otherwise he isn't in the contest. If there is a hint of body contact he usually gets pushed under the ball. If the ball comes in high he just gets moved out of the contest way too easily, its even a problem in the VFL against sub-standard defenders.

Honestly dont know if you are being serious or not.
But if the club seriously thinks Wayne helping out Majak and McKay is gonna hurt its image in the eyes of the community we should just stop competing

Disagree. Defenders body him when he has to adjust to a poor kick, just like any other forward. If it is out in front he will take it. That was what was great about Ben this year, the amount of times he lead to the ball and had it land about arms length made him impossible to beat.

That’s the big reason he needs to learn to lead, he will be hard to stop moving at the ball

I'm inclined towards your opinion on this - although obviously forwards need to be good at creating their own space to lead into. I do feel at times that Maj covers ground quicker than anticipated and we need to get better at leading him to the ball. He's a much better chance of marking if he has to struggle to make up an extra 5m rather than stop and prop. He's also not the kind of bloke you want running into your back at full pace to mark over you. If we're going to have him make it we need to get better at making him a weapon.

Dead right. Forwards can look pretty crap if they are getting bad delivery.

Doesn't even need to be at the club for christ sake. Go to a local park. Carey's football bootcamp.

I have been saying for three years now kick it in front of him and make him run to it, If I can see why can't every player and coach must be able to, we have to stop trying to make him what he isn't and get him to play to his strengths.

JZ is one of the few that can read the fall of the ball, plant his feet and use the body against similar opponents and we already have Brown, Waite and Wood who will take the mark when given a run at it.

It is not like our forwards and mids are inclined to take the body first and then chip the ball to open space or the fat side.

Given all that it is almost as if JZ should be the deepest forward.

Not sure where Maj fits.

Jack is fantastic at it. He can read and protect the ball drop better than just about anyone on our side, he is like an old school CHF. Its why I'm such a big advocate of him being a permanent forward.

I've always thought the guy was a giant onballer, tall enough to throw in the ruck.

His problem for me was endurance and that should be his main focus. I think the key with a guy like Majak was to get him to as many contests as possible to utilise his freakish traits of height, power and speed to positively influence a game for North.

The horse has bolted though and I've put a line through him in the blue n white. Not because of his inability as a player, but on our inability to utilise his talents to the fullest.

The kicking to our forward line has been utterly garbage for a good six or seven years, even when we had the triple towers and then were trying to push for a flag. Lots of kick and hope - which was probably underpinned by the fact we had little in the class department outside Harvey, Wells (when not injured) and Dal Santo (for a bit) for a long time.

The next gen has a lot more promising outside sorts, on top of Higgins who is often very pinpoint.

North Melbourne’s Majak Daw hoping to perfect his forward craft

MAJAK Daw is keen to perfect his craft as a forward this summer, saying he does not want to be limited to playing solely in the ruck as he enters his eighth season at North Melbourne.

Daw played only seven games last season, but enjoyed his best outing as a lone ruckman in a Round 18 clash with Essendon where he had 14 disposals, 33 hit-outs and took four marks.

It led to calls for Kangaroos coach Brad Scott to trial Daw as a permanent ruck, having initially been behind the likes of Todd Goldstein and Braydon Preuss in the pecking order.

But Daw, who has kicked 30 goals from 32 games across his career, doesn’t want to be locked into one position in 2018 and is instead hoping to feature in multiple roles.

“I feel comfortable playing as a ruckman, but I like kicking goals,” Daw told foxfooty.com.au at the launch of MindMax’s ‘Flick Footy’ game.

“The challenge for me going forward is to really get that balance right. I really want to play well as a forward and then be able to go into the ruck and pinch-hit in there.

“It’s a unique position. There aren’t many players who can do that role well. It’s challenging, because you’ve got to be able to play both positions well.”

Daw battled a series of injury issues across the last pre-season, hampering his start to the campaign and not allowing him to gel with the club’s forwards group.

However, the 26-year-old is hoping to finally get his body right this summer in an effort to start the 2018 season with a bang.

“I’m just looking forward to training with the other forwards,” Daw said.

“I missed out on a fair chunk of training last pre-season, so I missed getting to know how the other forwards operate and getting a better understanding of their leading patterns.

“I also want to work on marking contests and get better at that.”

Having not played more than nine games in any season throughout his career, Daw is hopeful the next campaign can be a breakout one in his career.

And he believes his ability to play in multiple positions across the field will give him a greater chance of earning an extended run in the senior side.

“It can be frustrating, but at the same time there is an opportunity there,” Daw said.

“If I can become really good at those positions, there’s no reason why I couldn’t play week in, week out.

“It’s tough to be consistent, but I’m always looking to try and improve in areas of my game to be a consistent player.

“If I play well one week, I want to back it up the next week. That’s the challenge for me, to be consistent and to get my body right.”

Daw was speaking at the launch of ‘Flick Footy’, a MindMax game designed to help reduce stress and help the 3 million Australians currently living with depression and anxiety.
Sorry Maj - you are a ruckman first, forward second and you must be trained that way.

26 years old for a ruckman is not that old - now is the time to perfect the role of the high leaping, aggressive ruckman.

from all the post i've read here, we are talking about turning someone into something else quite different. This is like asking a stallion to become a mule. Well if the coaching staffs are thinking of this then we are wasting our time as we will never get daw become the envisioned player the coach want him to be. The coach needs to let daw play the way daw is meant to me. His main weapon is running and static leaping as a 2nd ruckman. How many 2nd ruckman can run and jump like him?

I say let daw play a running game along a wing. Dont ask him to do too much, certain should ask him to be an all rounded player as your typical afl ruckman. Sometimes game plan has to be adjusted for specific player just like a teacher has to adjust his lesson plan for specific students that has unique abilities. The 3rd tall role does not suit him, plus we dont need more tall forward, 1 brown with 5 small pressure forwards is the way of the future. In fact even if brown goes down with acl forever, a jack ziebell as a tall forward is all you need.

Having a ruckman is no longer key, no having one is not such a bad idea. Let opp get the tap, we simply attack where the ball is going. So Daw's sole purpose is to do the centre jump and if you do the math, on average you have like 20 goals or more goals kicked per game, with his asset he will win more than he loses, his main job is done. His main opponent is the opposition's 2nd ruckman. We need to put daw in position where his deficiency is not as a problem.

Structurally wise, if we have brown, daw in ruck and woods can play the waite role once he retires. If brown is not there, ziebell at ff, woods as chf daw at ruck. If opp go tall we go short to improve running ability. If opp go short, we try and single out their player with singular taller players.

2018 is all about finding out about players and the most dangerous ive seen Daw was when he played on ball (ruck rover). His physical presence in the centre square contest with Preuss and Cunners could be brutal. Tell him to be defensive so he tackles and chases. Unleash the Behemoth.

Yes please! Remember that "everybody dropped" game in 2015 when Maj ragdolled Dusty like he was a soft toy and won a htb? More of that Maj.

Dead set right. Why does this seem obvious to me, and yet the entire NM team seem to not realise it :/

I think Maj has done OK when in ruck, but would love to see more of this. And if he can drop into the forward line to give a truly dangerous alternate target, then it might give BBB an even better chance when the team kicks it his way by taking a defender out of Ben's face.

Maj has big arms but also the waist circumference of a 12yo girl. Will always get outbodied and pushed under thr flight, unfortunately. Could only succeed as a wing, if he hasn't got the tank then it's all over for Maj.
