Hey guys, first time posting long long time reader so don't be too harsh. I was immensely disappointed by him being left out of the team. I understand we have to do whats best for the team, but I like many other on this forum followed his draft closely due to the fact that we were bound to get high picks and although I know for a variety of reasons he hasn't always put his best foot forward, I would have hoped we would attempt to give him the best AFL exposure as possible. First to develop him as best we can and second to get the best value we can when his contract ends at the end of this season. If he has an off and on year in our AFL team, good luck justifying to Port or Adelaide we deserve more than a 3rd round pick for someone I believe could be a star of the competition.

There is a bit of both. Consistency to play 85% plus game time week in and week out and the fact that Redman is doing well and Ridley had the better form.
Ridley was always an excellent talent. He should have gone top 10 in that draft imo.
Calm head and excellent ball user. We got a steal with that one. Im not surprised he has found a spot in the 22.
Redman has been a pleasant surprise. The kid seems driven to succeed. The draft story of him working on his running and fitness was nice to see.

a HB line of these 3 should hold us in good stead when Hurley and Hooker are done

I watched that draft closely too, first time I've ever taken any interest in the draft. As much as I want him to succeed though I'd rather he earned his spot in the 22, as McGrath, Ridley, Redman, Parish and Guelfi have (all of them are under 22). He's a bit of a slow burn though, talls usually are and he is slower than most given the off-field challenges he has had to face even to get this far.

I don't think he's particularly itching to go home, the thing that spurred him to make a last minute trade request when he was last out of contract seem to have been resolved now anyway.

As far as team selections go, "give Kid X a game" is somewhere near the bottom of our list of priorities, along with "maximising the trade value of Kid X". Playing kids is great for morale when you're losing, because you can always go "oh they're going to be good one day, they're getting all this experience". But I'd rather be winning in the present than hoping for a future that never seems to arrive.

Competently agree Lore, we shouldn't be giving him games, but that being said I didn't see much that warranted his omission after the first few rounds of footy. You could argue team selection and that would be fair, especially with hooker coming back into the lineup, but regardless its disheartening given his immense potential.

I'm sure he'll get his chance if he doesn't leave. Chook is 30 now, and Francis isn't running out games as well as he might. By the time Hooker/Hurley are ready to retire Francis should be about ready to take one of those spots. Can only hope Zerk is good enough by then to take the other at this point, since without Hooker and Hartley our tallest KPDs are 195 (Zerk) and 192/193 (everyone else). There's only so much a 193cm defender can do when they're faced with a two metre tall key forward.

Again I cant argue with much of what you have said, but in my opinion Francis wont ever be that 2nd tall we might need him to be. His potential will always be that intercepting tall and if we are relying on him to be something else in our defense then we have missed the mark by a long shot and will be left wanting.

Really hope they bring him in this week. He’s too good to be playing VFL. Bring him in to replace Brown as the mid size option floating i50. Think he’ll provides a nice balance b/w Joe/Jake & the 3 small pressure fwds & be an awkward match up for the cats back 6.

Couldn’t be any less a liability than Brown last week & atleast gives us a weapon in the air & keeps T Stewart honest who would’ve eaten Brown for breakfast.
The key difference between Brown and Francis is that Brown would always be the link up player between the flanks and did it with pretty good success. He didn’t set the world on fire but was more than serviceable. Francis will be cooked after the 1st quarter if he were to play this role, hence Stewart dominating this match up if it were to happen.

Didn’t suggest he’d play the link up role, more of an iso role i50, that spaces the defense & gives Joe a less congested area to work into.

Francis is a smart, gifted footballer, limited aerobically but a genuine X factor that could really throw the cats d if he influences the scoreboard early.

He’s worth a throw for sure.

The only way I’d play Francis forward is if we think the best way to make the Geelong defence more accountable is to stretch the ground and always have a player in our forward 50. You then make Francis that player. Otherwise down back or VFL.

I think we should play him forward, we need a replacement for Brown and he's fit and we need to keep getting games into him. We saw his marking ability towards the end of last year let's play him.

When your learning your craft as a defender what better way is there than to play forward against the best defenders in the comp (as in least points against so far this year).

And really complicate Geelong's plan?
