He's our best stoppage midfielder by a mile. Does all the little things, fires out all the unseen handballs and still collects a fair share of clearances. On top of that he is highly creative and doesn't go missing when the heats on, (Watch the last 5-10 minutes of the Essendon game.) Someone said before that he is part of the "second rotation" of midfielders. I'm pretty sure the club see Edwards, Miles and Cotchin as the best 3 midfielders to have at the center bounce.
Agree with everything, but Martin starts ahead of titch in the middle of the ground IMO

Martin in his earlier seasons was an inside machine, but especially last year, his game was highly based around his run and carry and damage with disposal. Dustin only averaged 0.5 center clearances a game this year. I believe he is far more preferred on a wing or a half forward, running into the center circle when the ball is bounced.

I agree with you ,But i think that we should be actually using him more in the starting midfield for roughly 20-25% of the time, He has a big strong body and also has a football brain and knows how to get the ball and make best use of it.

With the likes of Lennon.Lloyd.McDonough,Butler,Short,Menadue now on the list i think we will see more of Dusty getting time further up the ground in the next 2-3 years. Still a worry that he doesnt have a big enough tank to run out games though

When he was used in the centre square the Tigers had a centre clearance differential of +11.3% - the best rate of any midfielder at the club.

Thanks for posting from the Champion Data Prospectus. That stat about centre clearances is a great example of how stats can deepen the understanding of the game. I wouldn't have guessed Edwards was our best centre square mid. This season, I'll be looking for it.

I wonder if us running Cogs into the ground has us ultra cautious about playing kids in the guts too much too soon

I think the role 'inside midfielder' has the shortest career lifespan out of all positions. These players are taking an absolute bashing every game and all the little hits really do accumulate and take a toll on the body. See Jackson, Ball who retired this year at early ages and even a legend like Judd started declining when he should have been hitting his prime. Players like Selwood, Dangerfield and even Cotchin are the exact same and need to be managed so that their careers aren't cut short.

The club understands this. Hence they use rookie picks on players like Miles, Thomas, Lambert who were simply thought of as tools to take the hits and protect our stars from the rigors of the game when they were picked up. Our 'protected' inside midfielders, (Vlastuin, Conca, Martin) are being phased out into other positions and only given minimal time in the midfield in order to squeeze every single last drop we can out of their careers.

Don't think so, see Miles.
I doubt the club sees any more development coming out of Miles. As he is relatively slow, the only position he can possibly play is inside midfielder and would probably be a liability anywhere else on the ground.

The development left in Miles is more likely in just getting better at what he does, and doing it for longer.

The truth is that Shane does deserve to be known as elite Cotch has a higher turn over rate than Shane under pressure. Shane is always finding himself in a position to kick goals or give them off. Cotch is a better player than Shane by a mile but Shane is doing what is asked of him . Shane is never going to be a top ten player but he is a top 10 player in is role. I bet most teams 2 years ago would have laughed at him today all 17 would consider him as he is a specialist in putting pressure on defenses and in the middle he does Rioli stuff keep up the great work Sheds.

Lot's of love for Sheds on Game Day and Autopsy threads + voting but the guy IMO deserves and has earned his own 'love in' thread.

What a player - quick, elusive, creative, POSITIVE, unselfish... can not overstate how important he is to us moving the ball quickly and effectively forward.
PLUS - when in the clinches he snatches and clears the ball like lightning.

And his teammates have gotten more and more used to the fact that if Sheds is near the contest, they need to expect a bullet handball to come shooting out through a maze of arms and legs... AND ALWAYS TO THEIR ADVANTAGE IN TERMS OF GOING FORWARD!

Please stay fit Shane - I love watching you play!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

He's mine and rfctigerarmy's. So get in line and enjoy this blokes talents. Is an out and out gun now
LOL - there is enough Sheds quality for all to enjoy!
Although, I'm hardly a Johnny Come Lately - searched back and this is my 3rd pro Edwards thread...
Others were from 2012 & 2010!!!! :D
