Re: 13. Andrew Lovett

Obviously this has been the kick up the arse he needs. Now what i would like from the boy is more than the three standout games and the five very good games he has given us over each season. From all reports his preferred destination was us so he didn`t want to go,show us how much Essendon means to you Andrew.
It wasn't really a kick up the arse, because we wanted him gone. Knights isn't happy with the fact that we couldn't manufacturer a deal but i'm sure he's more than happy to give Lovett another shot, as long as he willing to commit himself to the club and approach football in a professional manner, on and off the field.

happy we held our nerve. it was a win-win, either a late first rounder or we keep him

"We" is perphaps the wrong word to use.
Knighter may have said that afterwards but according to a rather senior member of the selection committee, it was a windup and short of a spectacular offer he was not really on the table.

Re: 13. Andrew Lovett

I've also been converted. Really thought we should've traded him last year and was dissapointed we couldn't get anything for him. From all reports he's had a brilliant pre-season and tonight he looked really commited and focused.

More of the same please Andrew. :)

Put it back in your pants fellas, he's still got a fair way to go in my book.

Although it was a great start :thumbsu::)

Re: 13. Andrew Lovett

Thats is what he has to do more often. Two or three burts per quarter through the middle and a reasonably good defensive mindset.
Even if plays that well every second or third week he is value to the side.

Speak to Lovett and ask him to stop manufacturing kicks, and those across the ground short kicks.

His manufactured kick in the last minute, nearly cost EFC a goal.

He is an elite kick if he kicks straight down the guts, and even more effective at spotting kisks at full pace.

Re: 13. Andrew Lovett

Can remember him hitting someone lace out and it was very exciting to watch. I was happy to trade him thinking we'd get another top 20pick but it didn't eventuate and all I can hope is that Lovett maintains a similar standard though he should be able to play better as the year has barely began. Silky skills and elite pace are an amazing combination and very rare.

I remember, it was everyone (practically). would have had 92% percent effectiveness, I watched him all night, only two he miss kicked were trying to create something out of nothing when he didn't have possession, and one he put just 5cms to far for Skippy to reach.

it was the beginning of the 3rd quarter. he burst through the middle of the ground at top speed and hit neagle with a perfect pass, and neagle goaled from a set shot. one of the real highlights. if he can deliver like this on a consistant basis this year, he will be well on the way to living up to his potential. really happy to have kept him at efc.

Re: 13. Andrew Lovett

So happy we kept him- thought his game really endorsed this growing image of Lovett as a changed player. Kept going all night and I thought the Age had it right when they put him as our BOG.

To me, Andrew is vital in our game plan. The run that he provides is invaluable, and there's less than 5 players in the AFL who can split open a game like he can, and often does. Seeing some of those blistering runs from half back straight down the guts is so pleasing, and I can really see Andrew becoming an absolute star this year.

All the best to him: I think it's players like Lovett who will push us to our next premiership, and indeed decide where it falls.

An article about how Lovett is going from the AFL website
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/73648/default.aspx

ESSENDON coach Matthew Knights believes Andrew Lovett is ready to put a troubled 2008 behind him and become a significant contributor for the Bombers.

At the end of last season Knights was initially keen to trade Lovett, who had twice been suspended for ill-discipline throughout the year.

But Knights said at Windy Hill on Tuesday that the pair had worked through the situation.

“Andrew and I met yesterday, and we had a good discussion where we spoke about the last three or four months,” Knights said.

“We went right back to trade week, and spoke about how he’s endeavoured to put his best foot forward all the time.

“We went right to the wall in trade week, it could have gone one way or the other, but it’s full testament to an individual when he can go through that and then come back into a group and really work hard for three to four months.”

Knights said his relationship with the 26-year-old midfielder was still developing and encompassed more than just football.

“We speak regularly on a weekly or two-weekly basis. I sit down and watch his vision each week with him and we’re really comfortable. Our relationship’s good, it’s strong.

“I’m a big fan of Andrew Lovett as a footballer, but it’s the whole package – it’s not just about being a footballer.

“He knows that, he understands that.”

The coach said that, while he was happy with the direction in which Lovett was heading, there were still elements of his game he needed to develop.

“The gun midfielders have the whole package – they win disposals, they win hardballs, they kick goals, but they lay eight tackles a week,” said Knights.

“Andrew’s challenge is to do that, and if he applies himself, I think he can slowly get towards being an elite midfielder.

“I think he has a better understanding that his impact is important for the team, and he can’t be just a bit-player anymore. He has to be one of the ones that plays on a consistent basis at a high level.

“And I think he’s grasping that, and I’ll keep pushing him towards that.”

Re: 13. Andrew Lovett

Had Crowley on him today, who is a sniveling little weasel and hence a good tagger, and clearly beat him in the end. 6 center clearances, and skills were sharp. Frustrating player but when he is up, everyone plays better.

If he keeps it up, then essendon will get many more wins.
