Delisted 13. Liam Stocker

My point being, at both who quoted the original post, is that you have a young guy at 22 who has been brave enough to admit he hasn't quite adapted to the pressure of the lifestyle and he's been delisted.
These are 2 mutually exclusive points. He has been brave dealing with issues. He has also been delisted. No professional sportsman will be not delisted purely because he has mental health issues. To think otherwise is beyond naive.

Those that make the decisions, decided he wasn't good enough. Now the clubs only responsibility is to ensure they notify him in a decent manner and support him through his exit and hopefully beyond.

I am very, very disappointed with the call and still think it's an absolute shocker, but your belief that a mental health issue should have any bearing is ridonculous.

Our defence is pretty average yet they delist a player that goes hard it?
I dispute the bolded.
It took until round 21 for a team to score over 100 points against us and we were 6th in the league for points against.
Going hard at it is great (wish we had more like that), but there's more to it. If he isn't following team defensive structures properly, or can't keep up with his opponent, or doesn't have the same level of commitment to training/fitness levels, or potentially doesn't have the trust/support of the defensive unit, then it just won't work.

The comment about Austin's ego is a massive assumption and best left out of it.

Yeah, never once I thought Stocker was one of our best/most promising kids, think that was just wishful from some.

Never got to see really what he was capable of due to several injuries and circumstances beyond his control

look at most of the best 22 sides people listed on our board before delistings and he wasn't in many at all.

How can he go from being one of the best young players to delisted? Do we have an issue, still, with the development of our kids?

He's had injury issues which haven't helped his endurance at AFL level.

People that say he hasn't delivered in the midfield aren't taking into account his lack of uninterrupted pre seasons or the lack of opportunity on a continuous basis.
What I'm saying is that the club has been half arsed in its efforts and it's more about Austin's ego

Austin’s ego?

So you think he goes and delists players without any engagement or collaboration with the football department as a whole?

That’s one weird angle of attack

I think a lot of the emotion about Stocker's delisting is tied to manner of how he was drafted. The year of death riding got many personally invested in seeing the kid succeed and proving Silvagni's decision right. The fact he was shopped around and didn't get a bite suggests whatever we didn't see in him, other clubs didn't see it either.

I like Liam and hope he goes well at another club, however, we need speed and/or endurance to create more pressure on defence and then run hard the other way and unfortunately he doesn't have either of those (yet) to the level we require if we want to seriously challenge.

Need to be fast of mind, fast of feet, having elite disposal or have amazing game IQ, and at this stage he doesn't, and we want to make moves now so not prepared to wait.

He might become fanstic later down the track but be bold Blues, I'm okay with it, I think Boyd will be the better fit for us.
Already looks to have fantastic leg, low and hard passes short or long, speed to burn, and seems to run hard, and tough (maybe not as much as Stock, but it's there no doubt)

Put the same amount of time into both over the next 12-24 months and I'm seeing more possible high-level tools with Boyd.

Nah. You drafted two very talented mids who were high risk because they couldn't run. One of them learnt to run and became your captain and a star of the AFL. The other one still can't run.

While talent is important and we have plenty, probably the most important factor is buy in
Maybe young players have had trouble buying into the message the senior players have been selling in the past. Like wanting a new coach last year?

I think what we are seeing with this delisting is a number of things.

We have a really strong backline and we have really good depth with our smaller defenders. With all fit where does he stand there?

McGovern Weitering Marchbank Saad Young and Williams will be out best 22 defenders. Newman will be there if one pushes up to another position and Boyd and Kemp coming on in defensive roles have pushed past Stocker. Carroll could play back there too and I have a feeling we will be bringing in more players for that smaller defensive role.

He's no chance for a look-in in our midfield. Not even as depth.

Ability to run both ways is a non-negotiable for us now as it should be. I spoke about this years ago on here how the game has changed in a way where it's hard for young players to come through early or for pure footballers who aren't great athletes due to the IC cap, team defensive strategies and the requirement of all players to be able to run a long distance at speed (run both ways) for four quarters.

He's had 5 preseasons with us and his ability to run both ways is still terrible. His fitness and endurance is clearly really low. No question on his ability to play footy but there is no future for a player in a good side in this day and age who can't be a part of the team defence due to fitness restrictions because of that struggles to give much on the offence. You have to be able to run both ways and it's clear he can't.

He appeared to spend the majority of the time on the bench in the last quarter/half of the Collingwood game. I thought that was telling, clearly the coaching team felt he was letting us down. I noticed Melbourne exploiting him later in that game as well, taking him high up the ground knowing he wasn't able to push back hard enough on the break to get back to position in defence. If you could fix that he would be fine but 5 preseasons is probably long enough.

Our list has grown to a point where we are now delisting or trading guys who can play a bit and we aren't used to seeing that as a supporter base.

This rubbish about buying in to something just doesn’t seem right, because every time sticker played, he put his body on the line and always flew the flag.

So I don’t buy that.

'Buy in' is something we DON'T see on the field
So much talk about Stocker's weight, endurance, tank, fitness, always on the bench at the end of the game etc etc
Maybe, just maybe, he is not 'buying in' to the standards asked of him by the coaches and fitness staff to be AFL ready for 120 minutes of battle

Agreed. I love that Stocker was hard at it but people are massively overating it as the be and end all. If being an AFL player was just about being hard at it we would dump half our team and replace them with guys from the suburban league.

Junior footy is a different game. No requirement for team defence and two way running, the way it's played it's more supportive of pure footballers, there is far less of a requirement to be an athlete and a good endurance runner. In AFL it's a non-negotiable. Junior footy is all about the offence and less about the defence. It's why you get so many young guys drafted early who were good juniors but can't translate it to the AFL. Like Dow who is a genuine see ball get ball player, run around the field hunting the ball and contested ball and that's it where at AFL level you need to be less one dimensional, feed off other players and run both ways. Stocker is a terrific natural footballer, put him at the contest, remove the requirement to push up and down the ground at speed and he's great. It's super disappointing that after all this he hasn't improved in this area. Either he can't or he wasn't committed enough. Yes he had an injury in the preseason but there are plenty of players on our list who did and were able to come back into the AFL side and were able to meet the running KPIs.

It's up to him now to work his arse off and lose weight and improve his running ability and get onto a VFL or AFL list somewhere. You put improved fitness with his footy ability and you have a good AFL player.
