Consistency of effort has always been one of his main challenges ... and if he can kick he is 2 - 3 goals a week it will be huge win for the club ... easier said than done I must admit !!!

That first goal got his confidence up and he was starting to look like he knew he could put an impact on the game. We have been crying out for a forward to kick goals and one finally did

Had a poor game up until about 3/4 time but you know what? Didn't let his head drop and ended up being a matchwinner.

With no disrespect whatsoever, I didn't think he had that in him. It hadn't been his day but he made it his moments.

Good for you Liam :thumbsu:

I don't really understand the criticism of his game up until 3/4 time. Most of the time the ball was bombed into 50, and Jones was being double teamed constantly. I think he did a great job in competing against mostly 2 players, did well to bring the ball to ground and did well to hold it in our forward 50.

Was fantastic to see him kick the 2 goals in the last because I feel it was a reward for his effort from earlier in the game. Sure they were from 15 meters out, but one word for you my friends Casboult.

Lets hope he keeps up this form and he can actually turn the corner and become a decent player for the club.

Mostly being a key word, he was against 3 on a few occasions!

Liam highlights the difference between the Bolton Holistic approach and the old fashioned approach of the previous coaches (yes ratten as well) . FINALLY the senior coach is realising HOW important the Northern Blues are to the development of our younger or out of favour/form players. It has always amazed me that the roles being asked of the players in the Northern blues have often been totally different to the ones that they were given when they received the call up. Adding further to the problem was a very different game plan between the northerners and the senior team, so that the player was hit with a triple whammy when they played seniors
1. Extra pace of the game
2 Different Game plan
3 Often played out of position/ different role
It is no wonder many just didnt show anything when stepping up.

Pagan and malthouse were old school and so never got this idea. ratten probably did , but had neither the confidence or the support to implement a holistic approach. BB on the other hand had seen the hawks implement a culture that he wanted to modify and improve on. He had the confidence , ability, willingness and support to do this and it is already showing big rewards. Well done BB and Josh. Well done Liam.

Good to see this acknowledged. Because Jones played closer to goal than Levi, he was the one getting double teamed. This allowed Levi to have more one on one contests, which we know he can win more often than not.

Jones took one for the team for most of the game & then when some easier contests came his way, he capitalised. This was a different Liam Jones to the one we saw in 2015.

Are we suggesting the plan was for Jones to stay anchored to the goal square for 3 quarters while Levi sought to get himself into the game by leading up the ground? Jones got up the ground in the last and a couple of other occasions during the game.

Sometimes you have to clear out your forward 50 and if you are double or triple teamed regularly up there then maybe you have to make yourself dangerous further out so you get those repeat forward entries.

His biggest problem is he takes too long to decide what to do with it when he gets it

Other than that I find him an enigma bec he does have some good traits

Really it is about Bolton (like any coach) getting the most out of what he has to work with. IF Jones can hold down a forward position and kick 1-2 goals a game whilst doing the other stuff as in assisting - remember he also layed a perfectly timed bump that cleared the way for a goal...then that is great. IF he can exert defensive pressure or make a competiton out of one of those too often seen up and under approaches we call delivery to the forward line - well that is great too. If a better player comes along and knocks him out - that is great too.

He isn't and never will be an A grade forward and neither is Casboult. Put a Jesse Hogan type genuine gun in the side - and they both become very good second and third tall forwards over night.

It certainly seemed that Jones had been instructed to play deep, almost as a decoy, to allow Levi some freedom. At the same time it meant that if we did go long, we at least had someone with some size to provide a contest & hopefully keep the ball inside 50 instead of putting it on the head of a medium/small forward, which we have seen so much of in recent years any time our KPFs worked up the ground.

He's really trying harder and working harder this year, he's not the best player but in our side he may become a best 22 player for us and be useful. I do like his attack on the contest and hard leading, we haven't had much of that this season.

Happy for him. Don't have any interest in rubbing it in people's faces as he needs to keep it up, but am glad he repaid my faith a bit today.

Rubbing what into who? He was invisible for 3.5 quarters and even Gerard Healey basically said it was all over for him. Takes an uncontested mark and then walks into a kick across goal and you have broken down into tears about repaying faith?

MM described him as: "Every now and again you come across things and you think I know this player. I've watched him now at training and I've seen one of the most explosive animals that I've ever seen and I mean that – he is totally explosive," Malthouse said.

Now you know why MM is out of a job.
They won't drop him this week, and I would love to see him come out and kick 5 or 6 and tear apart a game. The reality is that he is not up to AFL standard. He may be a good VFL player, but he cannot bridge that gap. I really hope I am wrong and he comes out kicks a bag at some stage of the year. I will gladly eat humble pie.

This is the issue for Jones and has been for many other players before him. No-one knows the reason as to why they cannot make the transition but they just don't.

You won't be munching on anything any time soon Moody.

sometimes they simply arent good enough. may be a good athlete etc. doesnt mean you can play at the highest level. thats when weaknesses get exposed.
