Braeden Campbell
Braeden Campbell was drafted with the fifth overall pick of the 2020 AFL Draft and has enjoyed an exciting start to life as a Swan. Recruited from Pennant Hills Demons, Campbell is revered for his brilliant versatility and exceptional left-foot kick. He made his AFL debut in Round 1 of the 2021 season and was voted as the Round 2 NAB Rising Star nominee after recording 25 disposals and six marks against the Adelaide Crows. The 21-year-old has improved year on year missing just one match in 2023 and set several career-best performances in the process.
Pick 5

Another shocker by the match committee making Braeden sub again for another grand final

That’s twice he’s had to come on in the third quarter with the match gone and his teammates broken zombies

(On a side note he also wasn’t part of that power debacle …inexplicably omitted while we started with players like Lladams, Wicks, Mills, Francis )

On the positive - unlike the rest, he hopefully doesn’t have the same mental scarring of the others. Its not his fault the GFs have been over by halftime

One of the few things the coaching staff can do different from this year is to make Campbell a mainstay rather than a bit player …no more sub, not more VFL…play him at high wing/ half forward all year and watch him smash it

That's the best description of them I've read.

Concerning somewhat will be his 5th year and hasnt cemented down a position yet.

Sorta heading down being a Zak Jones type player which would be really disappointing for a pick 5.

Is it his fault or the coaching panels fault? Truth is that it's probably somewhere in-between, but I think he'd have shown more than he has if he hadn't have been stuffed around so much.
Such a beautiful kick, he needs to play forward and stay forward.

The King! and I said this throughout the season. I don't think Campbell got more than a month in any set role or position at either level.

Mar 15 - Wing in AFL side
Mar 23 - Wing in AFL side
Mar 31 - Wing in AFL side
Apr 6 - Wing in AFL side
Apr 13 - Bye
Apr 21 - Senior sub
Apr 28 - Senior sub
May 4 - Inside mid in VFL
May 11 - Inside mid in VFL
May 17 - Senior sub
May 23 - Wing in AFL side
May 30 - Bye
June 9 - Senior sub
June 15 - Wing in AFL side
June 22 - Wing in AFL side
June 29 - Defence in AFL side
July 7 - Wing in AFL side
July 13 - Defence in AFL side
July 21 - Defence in AFL side
July 28 - Wing in AFL side
Aug 3 - Bye
Aug 9 - Defence in AFL side

Aug 24 - Half forward in AFL side
Aug 31 - Bye
Sep 7 - Senior sub

An absolute mess.

Has to play off half forward next year. Either he kicks goals or sets them up. No more shifting him around, he's done his defensive apprenticeship.

Agreed. If we can lock in a high HF/small or medium deep forward group of Campbell, Papley, Hayward, and Cleary we'll be in better general shape for ground balls and skill forward of the ball than what the side looked in the GF.

Problem is, does Horse even consider this to be something we should be focusing on?

I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact he named a team with one small forward and no elite pressure players in his forward line for the finals.
