Traded #17: Jake Melksham - Traded to Melbourne for pick 25

I think Melksham can consider himself lucky that Browne is out for the year and guys like Gleeson, Kenny & Kav have had injuries over the last 2 months.

Preferably, I would like to see Kav/O'Brien given a chance over Melksham/Howlett sometime in the near future.

I won't disagree with any of this.

Johnson got a lot of touches but wasn't damaging (other than the Selwood assist where Melksham got sucked into the contest and left Johnson free and Hardingham lost body contact)

I've watched one quarter of the replay.

So far my initial impression of Melksham's game is the same. Solid defensive job. Annoying that he is reduced to doing solid defensive roles.

Have to agree with the above. Think a super fit, super motivated and versatile fourth year Browne could have caused problems for Melksham who has certainly been in the bottom 6 players more often than not (and generally not playing particularly obvious roles). Just don't know that there is enough maturity without Melksham/Browne.

Scary to think he could potentially be a 100 game player by the end of this season.

Melksham is representative of our entire team for me. So infuriating sometimes but his best is really really good and when he's on a run of form I love having him in the team. Don't give up on us for the season, and don't drop Melksham just yet

And that's what makes it so frustrating.

Melksham #10, Colyer #26 in 2009 draft, born five days apart (turning 23 in two months). 92 games v 37 games.

Colyer has had limited opportunities, particularly in comparison to Melksham. Melksham has also played now for a while in a decent team and has not had to really shoulder a midfield load or anything to hamper his development. Colyer, I'm willing to give some more time.

Jake, please, give us something!

PS. He could play his 100th against Carlton in Rd 23 if he doesn't miss.

He's also our barometer.
I'm bothered by this concept more broadly.

Either he's that important that the team plays well when he does, or he's only good when things are easy. See Heppell on Friday, busted his arse against the tide. Goddard as well many times since he's been at the club. When have we had a game against a tough team where we're down and you think to yourself, jeez Jake's been good, wish there were more like him? Never? Thought so.

watched him work without the ball. Big quuestion on mark on his footy brain. He just stood in stupid spots, gave his opponent too much space and didn't fill holes when he could have. Going backwards.

I wouldn't question Melksham's effort.

He has done a lot of hard work since and including the Melbourne game. The lack of poise to cleanly handle the ball and inability to finish with ball in hand is what has hurt.

It all gets back to the warnings after we drafted him. Has all of the class you could want seemingly without any ability to control when to produce.

That he has gone backwards as he approaches 100 games is becoming a real concern.

A warning before we drafted him would've preferable.

I'm not so much questioning his effort, more the concept of a team's barometer and at the same time, Jake being ours. Looks great when the going is good, not so much when it's a bit tougher.

You are 100% spot on with your assessment of Melksham.:D

Complete agree. He looks to have a 'casual' attitude at present. Does not attack the ball, just seems to stand back and expect others to do the hard in and under work. Does not seem like he deserves his spot in the side, but it's not like the selectors will drop him. Bad track record of gifting games to 'favorites'

Another one of these accounts created on June 14, and no avatar to go with it.

Do you even life, bro?

June 14 = June 2014 and if you're implying this is a troll account or something you're wrong, it belongs to a mate of mine at work who I've pestered for the last week to join up. Well done making new users feel welcome :thumbsu:

Thanks for backing me up man. It's alright, those sort of comments wont discourage me from posting. I am happy to have joined up

We don't need people derailing threads playing alias cop, please.

Come to the mods if you have such concerns.

And for the record, in both cases here we have legitimate accounts.

I'm pretty suspicious of you tbh... Who's policing the police?

Given the tension for most of last night I wasn't paying attention. Was Melksham defending/running with?

I was happy with his performance which, like his game against Geelong on replay, I thought was a good defensive performance.

I then had a look at the stat sheet which was horrible, horrible reading.

What does everyone else think? Re-assessing his performances is one of the reasons I am so keen to watch the replay.

Didn't seem to do a lot. I remember a well-timed fist to rush a behind. No idea who he was playing on and can't remember any stuff ups.
