Player Profile:

At just 22 James Jordon can call himself a premiership player after appearing in the 2021 Grand Final for Melbourne as the medical substitute, the same year he made his debut for the Dees. The midfielder was initially taken as pick 33 in the 2018 draft and joined the Sydney Swans on the opening day of the 2023 AFL Free Agency Period. He played just 18 games in 2023 with the hopes to improve and grow in the red and white.

James Jordn
Born: 20 December 2000
Draft: 2018
Recruited from: Oakleigh Chargers >> Melbourne

Showed today why he shouldn't be stuck out tagging on the flanks. If he can shut down the absolute prime movers like Neale, why tag the 4th or 5th best opposition player out on the flanks.
Surprised after he tagged out Anderson early last year that he then became pigeon holed into just tagging flankers not more midfielders.

He couldn’t break into the Demons side?

Did we under use him last year even
All about how the Dees wanted to use him as a winger/HHF when they had people like Langdon and Petracca in those spaces. We're using him completely differently plus he's 2 years more mature and probably in a more positive mind space.

Agree. Goodwin and Longmire both learned their craft from Paul Roos, but Horse did the full apprenticeship and has a lot more experience as a coach. I expect Horse saw a greater potential in Jordon while Goodwin might have only seen him from a narrow perspective.

Experience is a constantly underrated commodity

I love watching Jordon play. He attacks every contest with such intent. His idea of cruise control is foot to the metal, flat out down the wrong side of the highway while daring other drivers to get the hell out of his way

James Jordon is a tagger with a difference

After three games' evidence, there is nobody doing a better job of tagging in the AFL than Sydney midfielder James Jordon. But the threat he poses in 2025 has as much to do with what he can do offensively as defensively. Jordon has played key roles on Hawthorn star Will Day for a half in Opening Round, dual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale in round one, and now Fremantle vice-captain Caleb Serong. His day was made hard against the Dockers on Sunday, but the smart Swan kept at his task and finished with a game-high 10 clearances from his 24 disposals, keeping Serong to 19 and five. Jordon has the ability to switch quickly between tagger and offensive midfielder, making him a dual threat for the players he targets. Cross-town rival Toby Bedford is doing great work as a tagger, but Jordon is doing the job in a rounded way that is hard to mimic. – Nathan Schmook

Interestingly JJ is leading the Mongrel Punt Defensive Player of the Year. HB gives it away in the intro. While I'm a paying member I don't pay the higher level that would give me access to the article. Not sure anyone on here is. Jules is a member like me (or was).
I really respect the way that he evaluates the contributions of players in the various positions especially since Errol won the winger award last year and finished second the previous.
It would be amazing for JJ to hold the lead but it's great to see the recognition he's getting from various respected sources. 😍

The full article is a really good read.
HB gives it to Serong a little and rightly points out that he was so busy trying to get himself into better spots and not paying enough attention to Jimmy, who was then doing damage the other way, and that in a game that was decided by 3 points, that may have lost them the game.
Blakey is currently equal 5th.

Thanks. Some of the Mongrel writers are not that great but I reckon HB is right up in the top echelon both for the analysis and the ability to express it. Not so much technical as distilling the essence.
Sadly I limit my media spend and he just gets the $6.60.
