Delisted #17: James Stewart - Will be delisted despite having a year on his contract - 24/8

Most of our KPP aren't ready for AFL footy. Keeping Stewart is a good move. The issue is getting James on the ground enough but hoping his injuries are behind him.

I too would of gone for 1 year then x amount of game triggers a second.

I hope not. Like devon smith contract. Body cooked nobody else offering 2. Don't understand it. Plenty of kpp prospects who should over take him in 12 months or that we need to get games into.

Please help me understand y 2?

Dodo really ruins this club.

Stewart's body is not cooked like Smith's was.

Smith had lost the speed and leg drive required to be a functional player.

Stewart seems to take the park quicker and more powerful each time but keeps getting injured.

Don't mind this at all. Signing for two years doesn't lock him in to our best 22, he can fight for his spot like everyone else.
I can't imagine it would be on huge money anyway & it will help to have a few mature bodies on the list.

Lets just hope he can stay fit.

Stewart is pretty much the KP version of Phillips. Experienced depth that isn't best 22 but you'll probably need to call on 8-10 times a year.

Although Phillips has been signing 1-year deals for a while, so would have thought the same could be said for Stewart.

I think it's more play him on the league's best and integrate Reid/Eyre/Brand by having them play on lesser opponents.

Get Ridley intercepting and use Laverde in Kelly's role is how I'd approach the defence next year.

All predicated on consistent pressure around the footy or decent service, he attacks the footy in the air in both attack and defence, we need to enable him to do that at both ends with confidence. He was an elite intercept player this year before he got dropped and injured.

I'm ok with 2 years considering the state of our list. Adds a bit of depth but concern on whether he can get on the park. I'd say we have at least 10 to cut before him at this stage.

There's no guarantee that Jones, Baldwin, Cox, Reid will surpass him next year or even be better than him in any part of their careers. Long way to go for them.

29 next season
missed 16 games this year via 2-3 injuries.
2 years fits our list strategy of late.
Does he really need to be given 2 years though? As you alluded to, he can barely get out on the park. He's a back up at best when fit. I would've thought 1 year with triggers for an extension would be plenty given there would be zero interest from any other club.

Why would there be zero interest in a 28 year old 199cm bloke who plays both ends well?

Sometimes you’ve got to tell them you love them, even if you wish they were someone else.

Anyway, don’t see the risk, if he gets overtaken by the younger crew I’m sure we can facilitate a trade, even if for peanuts.

As I pointed out in my previous post he can barely stay on the park. The most games he has played in one season is 17. i just don't think two years was necessary. You'd hope he's on peanuts. 29 next year and has never really be a bonafide best 22. One year would've been enough.

It is worth keeping him on our list for next year (who could cover Wright if he goes down?). And, I expect 2 years was necessary to ensure that happened.

Maybe club feels there are clubs willing to offer him two and don’t want to lose him as the other talls are not ready yet. We’re asking him to play through the ages of 29 & 30. He kicked 64 goals in two seasons as Bombers36 alluded to. He can do that again
He did not kick 64 goals in two seasons. This is a lie. His best year was 22 AFL goals. In his prime 22 goals 16. So not even accurate.

He has 5 injury prone years since. If this is not accepting mediocrity and bad list decisions than nothing is.

22 goals as a peak is quite replaceable.

You really think clubs were offering two years. How much he cost us 6 years ago?

As a 22 year old with potential he cost pick 77 but we believe clubs were offering 2 year contracts as a injury prone 28 year old fringe best 22 in a bottom 6 team.

We are dodo clones on this board and over rate our own players a lot.

Bigfooty board is worse than the club with thinking things through.

The only justification for two years is club is desperate and any resemblance of leadership is over compensated.

Averaged less than 11 games a year over 9 year career.

So he is either injury prone or just not that good.

How many games he play this year?
6. Missed a few with a calf, couple of VFL games playing forward to help fill in there while Zerk was playing in defence, and then did a plantar fascia. Was selected most weeks when he wasn’t injured.

It’s not like it’s repeat soft tissue is what I’m saying. Plantar fascia is a straight up weird injury, it’s not something you usually get again and again and again until all you have left is scar tissue.

6 from a 28 year old fringe player in a bottom 6 team. Not warning signs at all.

Sign him up for 3.

As you wish 😂

I mean I was specifically refuting the use of a decontextualised career average to determine whether a 2 year deal was appropriate, but if you wanna sign him for three based on 6 games this year then all power to you
