So Hurley came into work today to see his friend. First thing that was noticeable with him, was how much weight he has lost. Whoa. Looked about 5 kilos lighter. Looked FANTASTIC.

I was also introduced to him after my co-worker embarrassed me introducing me as his biggest fan

Had a very good chat with him. He said he can't wait (he said this with a smile on his face) to play on Crameri next year. Key word 'on', he didn't say against, but on.

;)

How's the lad's bunged-up wrists. Could he shake your hand without a crumbling chalky white mound of bone forming between you?

Good shake. Perfect shake. Single pump, not too hard, you know, doesn't have to prove anything but, you know, firm enough to know he was there.

Man, don't get me all moist for nothing now... How in hell is Hurley going to play down back after the loss of Crameri and Gumby? Surely that decision has been set in stone now...

On another subject, what is the chances of BJ playing forward this year as that midfielder/marking forward type? A pretty good fit i would have thought, also allowing Myers and others more opportunities in the middle.

Pretty good I would think for the reasons you've suggested, plus the need for more rotations due to the interchange cap will mean more players will spend more time in either attack or defense. I'll be really annoyed if Myers doesn't get more midfield time, he's a pretty important part of the team and we'd be mad to encourage him to walk away next year by not agreeing to his desire to see more midfield minutes.

BJ CHF, Hurley back?

I know any KPF depth we had has pretty much vanished, but BJ at CHF seems like a waste (even though he could probably make a credible attempt at it). Leadership/experience aside, the best thing he offers us is that lethal delivery into the F50 - and if he's going to play high enough for that to still be a focus, why play him there at all?

What if he was on a rotation system with the rucks? so you have one of BJ, Ryder and TBC at CHF. With the remainder of BJ's time spent in the centre, and the other rucks time spent in the pocket as usual. He may be wasted in the position from a certain perspective, but on the other hand he is 28 and i suppose managing his load for maximum impact is becoming a factor.
Hurley inside mid, BJ CHF, Hooker FF.
So he can play forward but not at CHF for some reason? I don't know that your piss take is making sense there... But hey, please enlighten me ;)

I just wish he could wear some kind of glove that makes the ball stick. It's so frustrating watching him drop mark after mark.

Yeah I know what you mean but I thought very late in the season he started holding a couple, one game in particular although can't remember which team, Blues maybe?? If he doesn't improve his overhead marking he won't last up forward.

Got to thinking about relative likelihoods concerning the Hurley's role in the forward line, and it's occurred to me that it is actually pretty unlikely for him to remain at CHF. The reason being that, although the structure seems okay when he is playing, the coaches have to deal with the simple reality that there is every chance his constant injuries will continue. Some players are just like that, and given the history with his wrists and the arthritis, he has to be regarded as a player that will be in and out of the team. I think our backline can cope with that scenario (if he was playing there), but i think we have seen that the forward line cannot.
Surely a goal for the coaches this year will be to really work hard on developing cohesion and tactics in the forward line, and if Hurley is integral to that structure it will sabotage everything. I suspect that they have been forced to take a new approach, so what will it be??
I put forward the idea of Goddard/Ryder/TBC sharing CHF as one possibility. I believe Fletcher has also been linked to the FF spot? That would make some sense as Fletch and Hurley would be swapping ends. It would also makes sense of why Fletch is back this year when competition for his place in the team has been so hot.
What other possibilities are there?

From the beginning I have wanted Hurley back, on the odd occasion he created doubts because he can tear a game apart forward, but in 2014 it is actually the first time I really want Hurley forward w/ Daniher and Bellchambers, whoever gets the 3rd tall defender will cause real problems, Daniher and Bellchambers height and marking ability or just Hurley's 1 on 1 strength.
I am all for Hurley as our 3rd tall.

Breakout in 2014 is a real possibility.

Cannot see TRB risking the whole forward line structure on him again. Fact is that his wrists are rooted. When you make a fist to punch, you are aligning the wrist with the forearm which is a very stable shape for the health of the wrist. When you try to mark in front of you, the wrist is cocked on an angle that creates maximum stress. If he continues to do damage to his wrists, eventually they wont be able to deal with the impact of punching either.
You saw it here first. His days of CHF are done*
