I'd probably be trying to convince them that is wasn't one second of consideration for contact, and that it was only late that his plan to slow a bit to pickup the ball before the opponent where he changed it to kicking the ball because of how close the opponent when he turned onto the ball, which suddenly become protecting himself as now contact was there.
