I would have thought that his post was consistent with the distinction between talent and performance that, until the last few hours, I thought would have been accepted by every person on the planet.

The reason for discussing talent as opposed to overall quality/performance is because they are distinct concepts.

No one has said Edwards or Cupido are/were good players. All that is being said is that they have an ability to do things with the football that few people can which speaks to the nature of their talent.

Well I have a different view of talent, especially AFL level talent - Your performance dictates your level of talent.

You have different view of the meaning of the word talent to the rest of the English speaking world...I'll give you that :)

I am discussing AFL level talent - Not talent in a general sense.

Talent in a football sense is absolutely and unequivocally whether someone has the latent physical and genetic gifts required.

Its is not whether they cash in on those gifts.

Cupido had it in bucket loads but was also lazy and had a poor work ethic. Someone like Ben Howlett or Damien Peverill is not especially naturally talented, but works hard and gets the most out of themselves.

I use to be in awe of Damian Cupido. Grew up next door to him in Croydon. Would go and have a kick with him down at Croydon oval from time to time. He was a freak.

You are underselling most AFL players - You have to be talented to be a regular AFL player - We don't grab Johnny or Jim off the street to become competent AFL players, unless of course you are Paul Meldrum.

Somehow some are confusing talented with AFL talented - There is a world of difference.

Yaco, you're overcomplicating it, seriously.

Talent is talent, and delivery on talent is delivery on talent. Fairly unambiguous.

I am disappointed that you didn't understand my reference to Paul Meldrum.

Oh no, I didn't miss it. ;)

He walked off the street at the end of 1979 and asked if he could do a pre-season. Meldrum was a very good AFL player. Highly skilled and nearly impossible to tackle.

Guys like Jimmy Stynes, Mark Blicavs, Dean Brogan, Pearce Hanley, Mike Pyke and so on tell a different story. Either minimal or no AFL talent but were athletes turned into AFL players.

And all these guys have proven themselves AFL talented - Not much I can do, if people believe that 2 or 3 outstanding games amongst dros,s means that you are AFL talented.

having a shoulder reco.

Apparently it's been in and out a couple of times since he did it in the Ireland v Indigenous game at the start of the year, so he's getting that sorted since the VFL side is done
