Love them both. Head On The Door is such a perfect album.View attachment 2038114
Released 40 years ago, ‘The Top’ is still one of my favourite Cure albums. It has been described as a ‘transitional’ album, which is fair, as the band moved from the Gothic gloom of ‘Pornography’ to a more eclectic psychedelic sound.
It was written and recorded while Robert Smith was also in Siouxsie and the Banshees and forms part of a psychedelic triptych that includes their album Hyena and The Cure’s 1985 release, ‘The Head on the Door’.

‘The Head on the Door’ is a natural progression from ‘The Top’ and in terms of The Cure, was a ‘high water mark’ album that could only be challenged by 1989’s ‘Disintegration’.
“I was at a dance club one night in Bermuda. Upstairs, they were playing disco, and downstairs I suddenly heard ‘Rock Lobster’ by The B-52’s for the first time. It sounds just like Yoko’s music. I said to myself, ‘It’s time to get out the old axe and wake the wife up.”
