Yea it did really. They had up to another 50 runs in them. They had plenty of time (like 4 full freaking days) to 'go for the win' without that needless stupidity.

But they didn't have 4 days. Lost a fair amount of play due to rain. Was only like 5 overs left in the end. Na, his team mates let him down. Good on him for going for a result.

Wonder what England do at the selection table now?

Bairstow had a shocker behind the stumps?

Ali out due to injury / form?

Rotate some fast bowlers?

Who they got to bring in in keeping / spinning / seaming?
Got a week in between tests so might not see many changes.

Wood has to come in for someone and i think Bairstow becomes a specialist bat.

"But with the team and the squad we’ve got at the moment, it’s such an exciting time to play Australia at home. I really feel like we could get one over on them, and give them a good hiding"

My heart and mind are surging in pride so euphoric that I'm not looking forward to the comedown!

This has been a knock-out for the ages. The two sides exchanged some heavy blows, and even at the end of Day 4 you couldn't pick a clear winner.

But then, just as Ben Stokes was levelling the knockout punch, Cummins' sees a GOAT sitting in the arena. In The Australian cricket team, the GOAT is a lucky charm. Puffed up by new vigour, he hits, slaps and slams with abandon, using BazBall against its creators. The GOAT then jumps into the arena, hanging around for long enough to piss off Stokes and the security while Cummins does his thing.

Finally, finally, Cummins readies a right hook at Ben Stokes, but he anticipated it and would surely block it - until The GOAT bit him in the ass, allowing Cummins to slam an Australian right-fist into Stokes' pasty pommy face!

And there it is, lads. Cummins, and Australia, are still standing.

This is the best Australian victory I've watched - losing the toss, having to stem runs on a flat pitch on the first day, batting in tougher conditions through both our first and second innings, gifting the ENG tailenders too many runs due to over-conservatism - and yet we won, anyway!

Whatever Cummins' flaws as a tactician (being overconservative), he knows how to lead by example when the chips are down. This game proved him to be a worthy leader.

I don't expect ENG's approach to change much, but I do want to see what happens when conditions don't go their way (and they won't).

And he knew for sure they would lose that play when he stupidly made the declaration? No. He let Australia back into the game and let himself and his team mates down. Had a ridiculous amount of time left in the match to bat the innings out into the next morning and still 'go for a result'. And his captaincy in the field the last hour or two was ordinary also (and that's being kind). To say he captained well overall is nonsense.

His early declaration took the pressure off Australia. It meant we could bat within our own constraints without the pressure of time for the entire game.

I don’t think they are a team that will panic and make bulk changes.

Potentially a fast bowling rotation. Bairstow will keep again, it is quite strange that Foakes is out of the side. Averaging over 30 with the bat (had a great knock last time he played vs NZ) and is a far superior keeper. Bairstow is too good of a batter to leave him out of the side entirely but they might be kicking themselves with his first innings performance. He is a better keeper than he showed this game and probably won’t be that bad again.

Jacks is next spinner in line and he is far worse than Moeen, I think they’ll keep Moeen in unless he can’t bowl. Root will bowl a lot of overs this series I think.

Can’t be a real quote, there’s no bigotry or offensive language.

Just brilliant from Cummins. I thought he'd cooked it when he started taking risks but all the calculated risks (backing away to slap a four on the off side, whacking root over the field) were actually well calculated and put the pressure back on England in an intelligent way and, more importantly, paid off. Ice in the veins!

I thought just giving Cummins singles was pretty dumb - the guy isn't Bradman so unsure why they would give him easy 1s with 20 to get.

For what it's worth, the decision to declare first innings - although it may have proven costly - at home and with a couple of wickets on offer, perhaps you can see the appeal. I wouldn't do it myself, but in a good position it could be a gamble that pays off for the whole series.

It's merely the sycophantic idolisation of every "unconventional" decision or impulse, and the aggressive criticism of Australia for simply playing their game and not joining in, that bristled a few hairs.

Rather than "saving" Test cricket, simply say there's a fascinating clash of styles in which both teams offer a lot but perhaps pay for weaknesses in their approach.

Regardless, a fiercely competitive match, but it is the focus on ideology rather than the actual battle, that has provided a source of annoyance.

Crawley dropped and Bairstow open? I probably would’ve leant that way pre series but it’s unlikely Bairstow would have the same impact with the bat when not in the middle order. I can’t see them dropping any one from 3-6.

Think they’ll persist with Bairstow and back him to do a better job with the gloves. He pretty much gave all his runs in the first innings back with his keeping.
