Universal Love 2. Dylan Grimes Retirement

I was fuming when the club unnecessarily extended him at the start of 2023. We're stuffed this year so doesn't really matter now. Turned out was a fair redundancy package for a club stalwart who would've taken unders his whole career. Would have to go down in history as a top 5 Rookie success story. I'm hoping he helps out our young magoo's defenders and mentors Gibcus for the remainder of the year cos if anyone can relate its Dr Frankensteins favourite patient. For those of you who drink the stuff be sure and support his winery as a thankyou for a magnificent career.

Started his career with a ton of injuries and he’s finished his career with a ton of injuries..

3 premierships and an absolute gun in between tho!
True champion, destroyed every forward he played on during our dynasty years

Pointy and hard elbows, lightning fast too would’ve be such a campaigner to play on

My Dad recently met Toby Green at a function and asked him who his toughest opponent ever was. He said Dylan.
At his peak 2017 - 2022ish Grimes was better and more versatile than Rance ever was imo

Could play on smalls or talls without any fuss and still set up counters as good as anyone

Rance may of changed the way key position players played the game but Grimes was better

Loved some of the games he played on Betts. Still a shame injuries have ended his 2024 season and mostly his career.

No motor bike celebrations against grimes to much. Or that stupid song of his lol

Grimes had beaten Cameron before they even had the first bounce most of the time

Absolutely had Cameron focused on beating Grimes instead of kicking goals textbook stuff in terms of the mental side of the game

One of my favourite Tigers ever.

No fuss and so underrated externally.

We all saw his potential early when he was great with a spoil but it looked like injuries would derail his career and to a degree he looked like a Thursfield who could only spoil and not much else.

Refined his skill set attacking wise and became a great intercept marker at a time our club peaked. 2018 was the best season I’ve witnessed with my eyes defensively where we’d often toy with the opposition, almost daring them to kick it long down the line and then BANG our back 6 would chop them off and sling shot it straight down.

Loved Dylan’s closing down speed at the peak of his powers and he’d put in a spoil with authority.

Robbie Grey also said Grimes was his toughest opponent.

I met Grimesy in his first year out at a aCraigieburn family day. I remember it well he came up and spoke to me and my young son for a good 10-15 minutes.
All he wanted to talk about was the club his teammates and how well Tom Derrickx had played in a practice game 😂

You could tell his passion then and that’s the way he has played his entire career, for the jumper. Can’t remember any better one on one player in my time watching the game, rarely beaten by an opponent.

During our peak I always remember thinking … Greene, Cameron, Gray etc… we’re not gonna win the game for the oppo as Grimes was simply unbeatable for a few seasons there.

His first quarter in the 2019 QF against Lions was the stuff of legend … single handedly kept that margin from being 6-goals at quarter time … i kid you not … go back and watch it.

Spent 5-years as the best DEFENDER in the game bar none. He should have 4 x AA, not 1. But he didn’t get enough SC points so missed out.

I wonder if the back has been a longer term issue that has finally given way. His decline in pace has been very significant over the past couple of years which seemed a bit early. Now he’s about to turn 33 I doubt there’s much coming back so almost certainly has to retire. Could’ve won the 2018 prelim if they matched him up on De Goey from the start instead of Rance.

Why didn't he retire it was written last season such a great of the club seeing him going out like this is a shame. I hope he can recover as back injuries are not so much fixable like some other parts. Still my fav player from our good and not so good years.

Looks like a geography teacher and talks like a conscientious civil citizen but plays with a commitment that would’ve been a little unnerving for some of the private school boys he played against.
Love him.

I was sitting on the same side that bump happened but at the other 50, and I'll never forget the sound of that collision, 90k odd people in the crowd and that bump sounded like a thunder clap.
