Universal Love 2. Dylan Grimes Retirement

I just want to say that I've met Dylan several times at some fan events over the years. He is one of the nicest footballers you'll ever meet. I have so much respect for Dylan as a player and a person. I'll be very saddened if he retires though I know it's probably time.
Dylan happened to be the first player that my son took a photo of and I couldn't be happier. Bravest player in our backing. Loved watching him play. I'd like to support his winery one day too with a drive out there!

2019 & 2020 Dylan Grimes was 🔥🔥🔥.
Stepped up as the general of the backline post-Rance’s injury/retirement.

Players take an agreed upon pay cut to stay under the salary cap,eg. in order to bring in elite players such as Lynch etc. The payoff is made in the form of an extra year on their contract, regardless. It’s a bonus year, a thank you for that salary sacrifice, all the while we’re scratching our heads wondering why they’re still on our list when they’re not performing.
Just a theory.

It’s probably more a case that he was one of the best defenders in the competition whilst we won 3 flags so if he wants to play on we’ll take the risk.

I reckon the playing coach role would suit him especially since Broad is sticking around. We need our premiership heroes to stay with the club and guide the younger guys. Grimes would be good in the spot assuming we aren't in desperate need to fill the list spot. If he plays some games as insurance then great, if he doesn't play a single game, he is still doing the development coach role.

Even pre injury the signs weren't good, he won't age well. Was enormous in the dynasty but he's cooked now (age and his body).

I saw Yzes recent response about Grimes where he said the clubs yet to decide on Grimes future. His 2024 has been as abysmal as expected. Yze really needs to start showing some backbone as Grimes retirement should've been announced long ago. Is he really stringing Grimes along, thinking he's a chance next year? Top 5 rookie success stories of all time but needs to go. Expecting press conference Monday/ Tuesday.

You obviously missed Yze on AFL360 saying that it’s more than likely Grimes retires earlier in the week. I fully suspect that they have made a call that a new contract won’t be offered, but Grimes hasn’t said officially he’s retiring.

Grimes has earned the right to make the call in a manner he sees fit.
All for this strong ‘backbone’ stuff, but as we are seeing from the fallout at Essendon re: Heppell the way you treat your clubs’ champions is vitally important.

No I don't have foxtel. Your comparing apples with aardvarks there. Heppel is fully fit and played 17 games this year, still contributing. Grimes has played 5 and hasn't even trained in 4 months as he recovers from back surgery. Not to mention he was putrid in 2023.

I don’t have Foxtel either, the AFL360 interview was on the clubs website.

Point re: Heppell was about showing respect to a club champion. Regardless of how he was this year or last year doesn’t detract from the fact he’s a former club captain, 200+ game player and three time premiership player. I’ve no doubt that he won’t be on RFC list next year, but you’ve got to handle it both privately and publicly the right way.

Grimes deserves at least that.

As expected. Absolute gun defender in his prime but the bookends of his career have been ruined by injury.

Thanks for everything, Optimus! Enjpy a well earned retirement!

Still criminal he only has 1 AA. Was arguably the best third tall utility type defender in the league for 6-7 years.
